Should paid ClassPass tennis classes be allowed on SF public reservable courts?

I have a lot of trouble reserving the tennis courts at Potrero Hill recreation center via the SF Rec and Park website. I get on at 11:59, and right as the clock hits noon, the most popular spots are booked (weekend mornings, weekdays before and after work hours). After months of dealing with this issue, I found a class on ClassPass that hosts regular classes at the popular times I'm hoping to play (The specific ClassPass listing URL has changed a couple of times, which makes it harder to link directly, but the listing is still findable through ClassPass search for "tennis" in SF.). This would be really convenient, but I'm wondering if this should be allowed? It feels wrong if scarce public court time can be used for private, paid classes without a clear arrangement with the city, but I’m interested in other people’s thoughts.

Looking at the reservations for Potrero Hill, it appears that courts for these class times may be booked under a variety of names or initials. Is the one-court / one-time-slot reservation restriction being followed as intended? I also notice that in the program overview, Potrero Hill is not listed as a location where tennis coaching is facilitated by the city.

If you are also concerned about commercial use of scarce public court time, please consider emailing REC-Courts@sfgov.org and the Potrero Hill supervisor Shamann.Walton@sfgov.org and ask them to clarify whether paid third-party classes are allowed on the publicly reservable tennis courts at Potrero Hill.

Tennis Coach monetizing public tennis courts via ClassPass and reservation bots

Inspired by the Rossi tennis court drama, I figured I’d submit my own grievances with people abusing San Francisco’s public tennis courts.

In theory, the Potrero Hill recreation center has two publicly reservable tennis courts via SF Rec and Parks. In reality, it is almost impossible to book these courts on weekday mornings before and after work. At 12pm, when reservations open, these times would be booked instantly, every single time. This is not a new problem in San Francisco - like any scarce resource these days, court reservations are plagued with bots that claim courts with inhuman speed. What is new here is that instead of using the courts as intended for recreational play, “coach” Andrew Chang is monetizing these botted public court reservations to sell classes on ClassPass. For $5 per court per hour, Andrew makes ~$30-$40 per student, while other residents are unable to use the courts recreationally.

It’s one thing for the city to offer group classes to residents on these courts, but it’s another for a private individual to block out other residents for their own monetary gain. Please help me get the attention of SF Rec and Parks by emailing REC-Courts@sfgov.org about this situation.

Employee on rotation debating internal transfer to my team. How can I convince them to join without betraying his current manager’s trust?

I’ve had someone rotated into my team for the last 4 months, and they are interested in joining my team permanently. However, the thing that is holding them back from making the call is that they feel like they would be closer to getting promoted on their current team where they are a subject matter expert on a short staffed team, while with my team they would be learning a different specialty on a larger team.

However, when I was meeting with the employee’s current manager (CM) for their performance review, CM made it clear that they didn’t think very highly of the employee’s communication skills. This was while I was singing this employee’s praises about their contributions for the quarter, and CM seemed kind of surprised with the employee’s performance. All this to say that I think the employee’s hopes of being promoted by CM on their current team feels unrealistic.

But is there any ethical way to pass on this knowledge to the employee? I don’t want to lean too hard on the scale to poach an employee from another internal team, but I can’t help but feel like the employee is making a bad choice for themselves personally if they choose to stay on their current team.
