Thinking about visiting Iraq from the UK – looking for advice
Hi everyone,
A few mates and I from the UK are seriously considering visiting Iraq next year as tourists. We tend to travel to places that are a bit off the usual tourist trail, we’ve already been to countries like Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Iraq has been high on our list for a while.
We’re interested in experiencing the culture, history, food and meeting local people rather than just ticking countries off. We’d probably hire a local guide/driver for at least part of the trip.
I’d love to hear from people who have visited recently or, even better, from Iraqis themselves.
A few questions:
- What places are absolute must-visits?
- How long would you recommend for a first trip?
- Is Baghdad worth spending several days in?
- Which cities surprised you the most?
- Are there any places that tourists often overlook but shouldn’t?
- Is it better to focus on federal Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, or try to do both?
- Any recommendations for trustworthy local guides or tour companies?
- Any cultural etiquette or things we should know before visiting?
- Is there anything that gets exaggerated online (either positively or negatively)?
We’re experienced travellers and comfortable visiting places that aren’t typical holiday destinations, but we also want to be respectful and travel responsibly.
Looking forward to hearing your recommendations and experiences. Thanks!
