Convince me this is a bad idea

(I've talked about this before, here and other places, so if you think you saw it before, you're not imagining it.)

I think Dropbox should create a new application that is basically a better version of the File Transfer feature of Teamviewer and Anydesk. And mix in a feature similar to that of Localsend.

They can leave local LAN connections free and add in over Internet connections in their paid plans. Maybe have some non-popup banner ADs in the free one.

I know their a cloud storage company but they could use some innovation or some big new product.

I know they are trying already. Just look at Dash. Yea, it's cloud computing but barely has anything to do with their own cloud storage. So they've already started trying new things that's not exactly just cloud storage.

Anyhow, I want to know if my idea is bad. Where am I going wrong with it? Does it make any sense? Is the concept just a waste?

Any opinion is welcomed. Harsh ones included.

Here's a more detailed post I made about this, if anyone is interested:

I have an idea for Dropbox

Firstly, it's important to note that if you think you saw me talking about this before in the first Dropbox community, you are right. I tried before but didn't pitch it very well. But I think I figured out a better way and want to try one more time.

I should note as well, I am not a software engineer and not affiliated with Dropbox. I just think this is a good idea and think this would benefit Dropbox.

With that said, back to the main point.

I have an idea for Dropbox.

What I want to propose is that Dropbox should make a cross-platform application that would give any device NAS like abilities for easy exploring and exchanging of files and folders between devices. Along with a feature to quick send files.

That's the general idea. I know everyone would have some questions and would want me to elaborate more but I realized the best way to convey the idea is to compare it to the features of competitors.

So with that in mind, I would state the idea as to make a better version of the File Transfer feature of Teamviewer or Anydesk. Along with incorporating a feature similar to that of Localsend.

This is the best way to explain my idea.

I know it can be viewed that there are 2 big competitors already but their version of it is not the core feature of their product and, once you use it enough, you can tell it is lacking in quality.

Along with that, Localsend is an application with millions of downloads because they made an application that is easier and better to quick send files over LAN. Basically taking advantage of where applications or system features did poorly at and many companies overlooked.

I think if they pursued the application I am proposing then the company can enhance its public perception in the market as one truly focused on File management. Pitching itself in a way that whether it is cloud files or Local files, the company can make it easier for you to manage it all.

I know this idea falls outside cloud storage and mostly is about file management but I think this is a good move for the company as I've seen the company already applied the same mindset with the creation of Dropbox Dash.

Here is what I think are some of the Pro and Cons are.

Pros:

• Attracting a niche market where not many companies are in and only a couple indie projects exist as well.

• Expansion of Dropbox's suite of products.

• Boost in public perception as truly caring about file management and helping users have better control and use of the devices they own.

• Less expensive running cost compared to cloud storage and cloud compute.

Cons:

• Would require resources to develop and maintain this new application.

• Could affect cloud storage sales.

I need to acknowledge that with an application like this, some customers would feel less inclined to purchase a cloud storage plan or change to a higher plan as the application can assist with LAN transfers and can have devices act as cold storage.

I think this is not much of a problem as the application would not have all the features of cloud storage. Those being: syncing, 24-hour access, automatic backups, real time and same time collaborations.

Regarding revenue, I think this application can contribute to revenue by incentivising purchasing a cloud storage plan. This can be done by allowing 'over LAN connections and transfers between devices' to be free and let the feature to allow 'over Internet connections and transfers between devices' to be paid for. And they can include that feature in all of their current storage plans.

And that's about it.

There's more about user interface and design I could talk about but this is generally the core of the idea.

If anyone has any input, I would appreciate it. Like:

• What's good about the idea?

• What's bad about the idea?

• If there's anything I'm overlooking?

• Is there applications that already exist that does this?

Any input is welcomed.

Oh, and I have a working title for the idea. I'm referring to it as Dropbox FTP. If someone has suggestions for a better working title, feel free to let me know.

What do you think of Dropbox Dash?

Hi everyone,

I've been curious of Dropbox Dash for sometime.

I heard a lot about it but never used it.

What I know about it is that it is a cross platform application (that I think is in Beta). It allows you to connect your different accounts (emails, cloud storage, note taking apps etc.) and let's you do an AI powered search through all your stuff for the relevant files. And even does AI summaries of the materials gathered. At least, this is what I know about it.

I don't hear a lot about it and am interested to hear people's experience with it.

Ever heard about it?

Have you ever used it?

Did you like it?

Did you hate it?

Any pros and cons to share?

After you tried it, did you keep using it?

Do you use it regularly?

As far as I can tell, Dropbox hasn't put out any users numbers for enrollment and usage frequency. So I'm curious about that too.

Any opinions would be interesting to me.

How to get a meeting with the CEO or someone in leadership at a company?

Good day all. First time posting here.

I'm not a CEO but I am looking for advice.

I have an idea I want to pitch to a company. I won't go into the details and merits of the idea but I think it is something that would be very beneficial to them.

If I want to pitch the idea to them, how can I get a meeting with someone high up to see if they are interested?

The company is Dropbox. I've tried their forums, cold emails, LinkedIn, Instagram and reddit. So far, very little progress was made.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi there. I've had this thought in my mind for a while and wanted to put this out there and see what others might think. It's odd to be suggesting a company should make a whole other product when they don't really work in this specific area but I would like to hear why other people think it will work or not work.

I am suggesting that Dropbox should make a cross platform application that allows your device to act as a FTP server. Making it easy to access any file on a device from another device.

I always wanted a good software that can do this but I don’t know a good version for this and I don’t have the skills to build something like this. There is probably software I am unware of that does this and certain platforms allows this natively but I think that this is something people would like to have and is something right up Dropbox’s alley.

With Dropbox being a cloud storage company, this sounds counterintuitive but I think it’s a new avenue that not many companies give much thought to and is an opportunity to take advantage of.

Here’s the general idea in my head:

• It will be a cross platform application. Meaning it would be available for Windows, MacOS, Android, IOS and Linux (particularly for Arch linux).

• Files on a device can be accessed over a LAN Network, Mobile Hotspot and the Internet.

• It should focus on easy setup.

• Setup should allow optional changing of details such as having a password, which folders can be accessed, bandwidth speed etc.

• Once a device is setup, another device can find it through the application by detecting the device on the LAN network or find it registered to an account for Internet access.

• The application should allow for transfers of multiple files through a single request.

• The application should allow for transfers of a whole folder or multiple folders through a single request.

Ideally, I would like the devices to be connected not just through LAN and Internet but rather via any method meaning Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth, USB cable and whatever else. But I think that's asking for too much.

There's other things I would like to add but that is the core idea.

I know there’s software like FileZilla, Syncthing, WinSCP and others but I feel like they are lacking in some way.

I thought that Dropbox would be a good company for this as 'they are a company fundamentally about making files easier to access and manage', 'they seem as though they could use a new avenue to explore for growth ' and 'they seem like a company that hears out their customers'.

That's about it for the suggestion.

I'm very interested to hear people's opinions.
