Can't sustain Dropbox $ for years, thinking of moving all files off, need advice

I have 2 Dropbox accounts that I am paying $300 a year for.

One of them is 3TB and I’ve used 2TB.

The other is 2TB and I have used 1.5 TB.

So, I have about 3.5TB of data that just grows as I work on projects.

I was in art licensing and have a massive archive of artwork/design files. I still do some work there but not as much as I used to. I create Youtube video and have a growing archive of CapCut files.

I am semi-retired and starting to look much harder at finances and money going out. I cannot sustain paying for Dropbox.  I am considering moving all my files off. (and not looking forward to that)

The only solution I see is to get two large (8TB maybe) drives and use them to back up each other. This scares the bejesus out of me because in my long career, I have had a few peripheral drives fail. One time I had both drives fail within a day of each other but fortunately it was when I had MUCH less files and was able to quickly backup the files elsewhere before the 2nd drive failed. Both were Western Digital. I also had a Lacie fail.

I am not sure what I am asking for in terms of advice - but lay it on me - whatever you got.  Have any of you done this? It’s been a long time since I’ve purchased a peripheral so I am not sure what kind/brand/type is the best anymore. What’s reliable and stable?

Thanks in advance.

Has anyone actually replaced Dropbox with iCloud Drive?

Hello,

I’ve been using the paid 3 TB Dropbox plan for many years and, overall, I’ve always been reasonably happy with it.

Lately, though, I’ve started thinking more seriously about the Apple ecosystem as a whole. There’s already talk that some Apple AI features may eventually require an additional paid subscription, and that made me wonder: if I’m going to keep paying for digital services anyway, does it still make sense to keep Dropbox as a separate service, or is iCloud Drive now mature enough to truly replace it?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have actually moved from Dropbox to iCloud Drive, rather than just theoretical comparisons.

How has your experience been with syncing, reliability, file management, sharing, previous version recovery, and everyday use across Mac, iPhone, and possibly other devices?

Are there any limits, issues, or small frustrations that only become clear after using it seriously for work or for storing a large number of files?

In short: can iCloud Drive genuinely replace Dropbox today, or is Dropbox still the more solid option for “serious” use?

Thanks.

Convince me this is a bad idea

(I've talked about this before, here and other places, so if you think you saw it before, you're not imagining it.)

I think Dropbox should create a new application that is basically a better version of the File Transfer feature of Teamviewer and Anydesk. And mix in a feature similar to that of Localsend.

They can leave local LAN connections free and add in over Internet connections in their paid plans. Maybe have some non-popup banner ADs in the free one.

I know their a cloud storage company but they could use some innovation or some big new product.

I know they are trying already. Just look at Dash. Yea, it's cloud computing but barely has anything to do with their own cloud storage. So they've already started trying new things that's not exactly just cloud storage.

Anyhow, I want to know if my idea is bad. Where am I going wrong with it? Does it make any sense? Is the concept just a waste?

Any opinion is welcomed. Harsh ones included.

Here's a more detailed post I made about this, if anyone is interested:
