The way Britney’s soul left her body when she found out “Jessica Simpson” was actually... Derek 😭

There’s been significant debate over the change in Ev’s lyrical style over the years: from metaphorical and emotionally mythic to more grounded and literal. What I’ve seen less discussed is her recent propensity to shine a spotlight on the literal meaning of every song.
Older Ev work had less emotional specificity: they felt symbolic, dreamlike, spiritual. That ambiguity lets listeners project themselves into them.
So when I hear:
“this song is about the patriarchy for me” and “this is about missing New York” I find it shrinks the imaginative field as they’re concrete labels. Your brain can start organizing the song around those statements instead of wandering through emotional associations. It depletes a song’s aura.
It’s not that these are *bad* inspirations. It’s just that for me, hearing the “seed” too directly can make building a relationship with the song more difficult. This over-definition of a song feels like turning on a fluorescent overhead light in a room that was more beautiful by candlelight.
I find a little ambiguity crucial to my enjoyment of music, especially Ev’s, and that’s why I’m unfortunately staying away from interviews for awhile... and I hate it because it's like, the best time for them 😭 I’m curious how others feel.
