[Beloved Trope] Character shows a genuinely ugly side and is met with unconditional love and forgiveness
Natsuki Subaru (Re:Zero):
Subaru starts the series as a somewhat childish kid with escapist fantasies, who still tries to do the right thing when it really matters. He cares deeply about the people he's close to, sacrificing his life to save Rem after being tortured by her and lifting her up out of her depressive state, bonding in his own way with the people of the mansion he ended up working in and the people in the neighboring village. And then Episode 13 happens- Subaru publicly humiliates himself and Emilia while trying to play hero, gets beaten up in front of a jeering crowd, and in a desperate attempt to avoid being abandoned, lashes out at Emilia, screaming that she owes him a debt she can never repay- leading him to actually get abandoned as she decided he's better off away from her. This is just the beginning of his depressive spiral, however, as he finds out Emilia's in trouble, rushes over to play the hero and save her to prove himself, and subsequently has his escapist delusions violently shattered when he finds the destroyed corpses of everyone he loves. Eventually, suffocated by hopelessness, he resolves to just run away with Rem, the only person he can reach. He goes on an entire tirade about how he never accomplished anything, that he's a fraud who's all talk, and how he hated himself down to his bones. Faced directly with Subaru's self-hatred and ugliest side, Rem doesn't flinch- she tells him the things she loves about him, and that he doesn't know the Subaru Rem sees- the person who saved her life and made her happy, who was good enough from the start. Rem tells him that if he hates himself, then they can start From Zero in one of the most impactful moments in the series. Rem faces all of Subaru's trauma and self-loathing and meets it with kindness and love, lifting him up the same way she did with him.
Reigen Arataka and Shigeo Kageyama (Mob Psycho 100):
Reigen starts the series as a sleazy conman clearly taking advantage of his "student" Shigeo Kageyama (nickname 'Mob'), while tricking him into thinking he has powers he obviously doesn't. As the series keeps going, we see that their relationship is a lot more than that- with Reigen being a genuinely good influence and supportive adult in Shigeo's life, helping him deal with his powers and emotions in a healthy way. Eventually, however, they end up getting into a fight when Reigen pushes Mob too far, and they end up going their separate ways. When it finally comes out publicly that Reigen's a fraud, and he's brought to his lowest point, Shigeo comes back and tells him "I knew from the start... What my master is, is a genuinely good person." Mob had known that Reigen was a conman the entire time and accepted him anyway, because Reigen was worth it.
Shigeo, meanwhile, has been repressed and divorced from his emotions from a young age due to his powers. When he can't repress them anymore they explode in his 100% states (such as 100% Rage, 100% Courage, 100% Resignation, etc.) as a surge of power. If he gets knocked out while determined to do something, though, something more uncontrollable comes out- ???%, a being of incredible power created by his repressed emotions, that acts on his desires without any restraint. When he gets hit by a car preparing to confess to his childhood crush (due to him not using his psychic power and jumping in the way of a child), ???% comes out in full force, fully ready to get to Tsubomi regardless of anything else, such as the lives in front of him or the cataclysmic storm, as Mob tries to fight ???% from the inside. When Reigen confronts this force of nature (fighting through a massive storm in the process), he sees it for what it is- another side of Mob that was repressed due to Mob not accepting himself. Reigen faces Mob at his worst and comes clean about his own worst side, admitting how much he hates that side of him in a moment of incredible vulnerability. By being honest about that side of himself, he gives Mob the strength to accept ???% and come to terms with himself as well.
Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender):
Zuko starts the series as a banished, disgraced prince to the throne, hellbent on capturing the Avatar to restore his honor and come back home. The only real support he has is his Uncle, Iroh- a supportive adult who gives him some wisdom and lightheartedness in his life while subtly guiding him to become his own person and take care of himself. This becomes more explicit in the second season, when Zuko is faced with the possibility of genuinely starting a new life with his uncle in a tea shop in Ba Sing Se and letting go of his obsession and self-hatred. He doesn't. In the climax of the season, Zuko turns his back on everything he cares about- his uncle, chance at redemption, his inner nature- all to claw back a chance at the honor he's been ingrained to believe he needs. When he finally comes to terms with what he really wants and overcomes his father's abuse, he returns to Iroh completely ready to pay for his betrayal, and is met instead with complete forgiveness and relief. In Iroh's words, "I was never angry with you. I was sad, because I was afraid you lost your way."

Reaching Out (10-Year Anniversary of Self-Proclaimed Knight Natsuki Subaru)
Emilia's come so far, and Subaru's ready to start from zero. The Self-Proclaimed Natsuki Subaru is going to save them all.
"It was not a rejection of the Subaru Natsuki standing before her, not a desire to reclaim the past Subaru. It was an affirmation of him."

Season 4, Ep. 10: Split
Stretched a bit too thin.
Ngl, this was a bit of a rush job. I experimented with the foregrounds a fair bit, but it's a lot less polished than I'd like. Might revisit it

Re: Zero Season 4, Ep. 6 Fanart: Won't leave you alone
Decided to try posting some of my fanart on r/anime. I try to make one drawing for every episode of Re:Zero, finished before the net episode comes out. I hope I can post them here!
But man, Subaru's character and growth as a person will always be the highlight of Re:Zero. He knows what bitterness and helplessness feel like, so he supports and gives strength to the people he loves. He knows what loneliness is like, so he won't leave others alone. That's what makes him so great.
