My experience with the new Fitbit Air in Qatar (And why you might want to skip it for now)
Hey everyone, sharing my thoughts on the new screenless Fitbit Air for anyone else in the region considering picking one up.
The Shipping & Logistics:
I was really excited for the new Google Health ecosystem, so I preordered the Fitbit Air from Amazon on May 19th. It just got delivered here to Qatar via UPS yesterday (May 30th). Shipping was smooth, but unfortunately, the setup experience wasn't.
The Hardware:
Physically, the device is honestly great. If you want something lightweight that you can just put on your wrist and forget about—especially during workouts, swimming, or sleep—the form factor is excellent. It’s tiny, comfortable, and the battery life seems solid out of the box.
The Software (The Major Catch):
As you probably know, the entire selling point of the Air—especially since it's screenless—is that it pairs with the new Google Health AI Coach to give you personalized breakdowns of your fitness and sleep data.
Well, if you are using it here in Qatar, the AI Coach simply does not work. Despite activating the Google Health Premium trial, the feature is completely geo-blocked. There's no official rollout date for our region yet, meaning the primary feature you’re paying a premium subscription for is completely useless right now.
Verdict:
If you just want a sleek, minimal tracker to pass raw data into your app, the hardware is beautiful. But if you preordered it expecting the full AI-coaching experience like I did, it’s incredibly frustrating to be locked out. And VPN/region changing workarounds are useless. I'd hold off until Google actually delivers on the "global" part of their software rollout.
