Do patches not work with masks?

I'm trying to create a patch between an ear and an ear floof. The vector layers are inside a head group that is masked because I want to keep certain elements of the head within the main head shape (such as the eyes, the mouth, ect.) However. I've noticed something weird, and that is the patch for the floofs don't work if it's within the masked group. I've already tried setting the patch to "do not mask" but it still doesn't work. See images below.

EDIT: Just for a little bit more information, the ear is outside of the mask's shape, so technically it wouldn't be showing up if I hadn't set it as "do not mask" I've done the same for any other head elements that I don't want to keep within the head shape. Tried doing the same for the patch but it doesn't seem to work.
