Hulk (2003) is a underrated disasterpiece
Scrolling through YouTube the other night I stumbled on Ang Lee’s Hulk. I have to stress that this will feel contradictory so bear with me. This is my third time watching it, once in theaters as a kid, second as a young adult in my early 20s, and again in my mid 30s so take of that what you will.
As a kid I loved it. Naturally seeing a giant green man destroy stuff is cool no matter the age, but I remember thoroughly enjoying it in theaters. In my early 20s I got about halfway through before shutting it off. Now, I watched the entire thing and I can’t help but feel how misunderstood this flick is.
Right out the gate, I don’t think this movie is particularly good and I’ll say that objectively speaking any media with Hulk (most notably Ed Nortons and MCU’s take) has been better since. The film is slow (can’t believe I made it through as a kid), sometimes painfully so. It’s a bit melodramatic, the script could use some work , the CGI is downright embarrassing sometimes and yet - this is my favorite Hulk movie.
The one thing Ang Lee got right that no one has come close to capturing is the actual Hulk himself and what it means to Bruce. Watching Bruce struggle with this destructive force is so interesting to watch, and having him like it is a great way to showcase inner conflict. Eric Bana is amazing as Bruce Banner and he sells the quiet rage really well.
The pacing is slow and you feel it, yet when he turns into the green guy all that emotional buildup has some sort of pay off. You’ve spent (more than enough) time with these characters so watching him lose control makes you sympathize with the destruction as opposed to it feeling like an open playground.
As I recall, please correct me otherwise, this is the only Hulk movie we really see him destroying out of anger as opposed to being a superhero. And even then, there are moments when the Hulk is a hero in this. These moments are so small in his destruction that it overshadows that aspect, which again, makes this version of Hulk more involved. He’s like a child with infinite power let loose, and yet there are moments he sits down and smells the roses. There’s a quiet contemplation in it that hasn’t been touched on since.
The CGI can be pretty bad at moments and so can the weird negative screen effects, but this is still my favorite rendition of Hulk himself with the bright green and the prospect of getting larger as he gets angrier.
Danny Elfmans score is the cherry on top. Sucks the movie is dragged by its own ambition and I would love to see someone tackle Hulk this way again but with a bit less of a heavy hand. Ang Lee was an interesting choice and I will forever respect him for trying something new.
Anyway, rant over. It’s free on YT if you want to witness a bizarre, boring, crazy rendition of Hulks mythos.
