Coming back to illustration after fine arts school
Hi everyone!
So 3 years ago I dropped out of fine arts school. Nothing out of the ordinary, I was that art kid who went because they loved drawing only to realise fine arts was very different.
Here's the thing: fine arts school rewired my brain. Since quitting, I've been stuck in this weird in-between, where I obviously don't want to be a fine artist, but at the same time, doing more classical figurative illustration doesn't exactly scratch that itch in my brain like conceptual art does (i still love looking at other people's drawings).
The subject of a fine arts painting/drawing is usually the medium itself; the gesture that lead to the mark on the paper, the tension between the ink and the paper, the way it is displayed... A fine arts piece IS a piece of reality, while illustration to me now feels like it's... emulating it, you know? I think conceptual art is very satisfying, but illustration still has a huge place in my heart, and I can't find a way to transition back to it smoothly.
So my question is: has any of you gone back to illustration after studying fine arts? Do you keep some of the concepts in your illustrations or do you completely separate the two? Do you know artists who have both qualities in their art? How do these two approaches coexist in the art world?
(for example, I feel like Helvetica Blanc and Teagan White both scratch that illustration AND fine arts itch)
Thanks for reading me!
