Switch from a heavy setup to a Pocket 4P - Do I really need Fixed ND filters for the intense Mediterranean sun?

Switch from a heavy setup to a Pocket 4P - Do I really need Fixed ND filters for the intense Mediterranean sun?

(Here is the video showing the footages and testing the setup)

Hey everyone!

I decided to sell all my gear and streamline everything down to a DJI Osmo Pocket 4P paired with a DJI Mic 3 for audio. I took it out for a test walk in Santa Pola (a coastal town in Southern Spain) to see if going minimal was the right call.

The ND Filter Dilemma:

Since I recorded this mostly on Auto, the camera naturally cranked up the shutter speed to handle the intense Mediterranean sunlight. As a result, I lost that natural 180-degree shutter angle motion blur, leaving the footage looking a bit too "crisp" and digital.

I want to fix this with ND filters, but I'm on the fence:

  1. Variable NDs: Super convenient for run-and-gun shooting, but I've always been skeptical about cross-polarization (the dreaded "X" pattern), color shifts, or lost sharpness—especially in direct, harsh sun. Are high-end VNDs reliable enough for pocket sensors nowadays?
  2. Fixed NDs: If I go fixed, I know I'll get pristine image quality, but I'll need to swap them constantly. For those filming in high-sunlight locations, which density steps do you consider essential?
    • Is a set of ND8, ND32, and ND64 (or ND128) enough to cover everything from bright sunsets to midday beach light?

Would love to hear your thoughts on how you manage motion blur on run-and-gun setups in bright environments, and what you think of the test footage!

Is the 35mm f/1.7 worth it if I already own the 25mm and 56mm f/1.7?

Just ordered the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 Air. Unpaid endorsement, but I genuinely love my Viltrox glass (25mm & 56mm) and wanted to complete the AIR trinity. Bonus: it uses a 52mm thread, so all my filters fit right on.

That said, the post-purchase clarity just hit me—will I actually use it? I love the 35mm (50mm FF equivalent), probably my favorite FL, but lately I've found it too tight. That's exactly why I bought the 56mm—to pair with my 25mm. To me, that combo made more sense than buying the 35mm on its own at the time.

I know it's a rhetorical question; I'll keep it since it didn't break the bank. Still, I'd love to know if anyone else rocks this specific 25/35/56 trio. What do you think?

I forgot to mention—I also have the Viltrox 9mm f/2.8. It's a really fun lens to use and my absolute favorite for video.

I bought these 3 games for €99, did I make a good choice?

Finally! got a Chromatic 🥹

It is hard to come by in Europe, but through a second-hand seller, who is also a fantastic person, I got it for 250 euros with all the games you see. It is the first edition. I would like to know where to start, whether I should update the firmware, use some kind of protective case, screen protector, etc. Any recommendations?

My favorite Viltrox AIR trio

I was absolutely delighted with the 25mm f/1.7 – it's an exceptionally sharp lens. I later picked up the 9mm f/2.8, which has quickly become my go-to lens for video work. Most recently, I've added the 56mm f/1.7 to my kit for portraits, and I have full confidence that its performance will be up to scratch. Without a doubt, the Viltrox AIR series is truly incredible.
