Anyone know the rules for the placement of the hashmarks? Like we know now that from 2022-present the hasmarks are 28 yards from the sidelines.
Before 2022 they were 24 yards from the sidelines.
The question is when were they set at 24 yards?
We know the NFL had them from 1945 to 1971 set at 20 yards, before that, 15 yards which was changed from 10 yards in 1935 after their adoption by the NFL in 1932.
But looking at old Grey Cup games (and a lack of access to rule books from the era) as well as using the photos provided from 1945 -1976 I can only make some estimates.
So from the 1932 Grey Cup game (first image) it looks like they are scrimmaging right close from the sideline so we know in 1932, there was no hashmark rule in Canada.
From the 1946 Grey Cup (second image) which is the earliest I can find, the hashmarks look like they are 10 to 15 yards from the sideline though I am going to say 10 yards away.
From the 1952 Grey Cup (third image) it seems like with this frontage could be 10-12 yards wide from the base of the right goalpost. Add on 3 yards for the half the width of the goal posts. So 15 yards ish from middle of the field to the hashmarks which would be 30 yards between them. So 17 yards from sideline to hashmarks. Or maybe it’s 15 at low estimates.
This image from the 1958 Grey Cup (4th pic) looks like it’s still 15 ish yards but 1959 (5th pic) looks like it’s further in, say maybe 20 yards? Which remains the norm (6th pic 1960, 7th pic 1965,) till around 1970 (8th pic) where it look like the standard distance of 24 yards that we have known for a while.
Did the CRU (later CFL) follow the NFL’s changes when it came to hashmarks? Or are my estimates correct?
