Finally came around to watch Abaranger. Fun, solid Sentai... until THIS guy appears and then it becomes one of the most unique seasons ever. Always knew about Mikoto, but I didn't realize how BALLSY this character was until I watched it.

Contrary to additional Rangers who initially just wanted revenge (Dragon Ranger), joined the heroes relatively quickly (the Gouraigers) or were just cool anti-heroes with an edge (TimeFire) this guy is a genuine sociopath with existential emptiness treating this as a game for his own amusement. The way he acts as sort of a third party adds an interesting dynamic to the show, and when you think it's getting stale and he's finally going to join the heroes, nope, the writers double down and becomes the leader of the villain faction. I understand why kids didn't like it initially, it's certainly a very unsual and very risky character.

The DC K.O. tie-in of Flash was one of the best issue stretches of the character I've read in a long time. It felt like a missing story from the glorious Waid run. Even though it felt a bit like a greatest hits album, it just had "that thing" that made that run special. [Art by Dan Mora]

Obviously Timeranger and Dekaranger weren't designed to take place in the same world, but they connect surprisingly well

Timeranger and Dekaranger fit together like missing puzzle pieces when it comes to their lore. While they weren't explicitly designed as a single continuous narrative, their concepts align perfectly.

In both series there are criminals from space on Earth. Dekaranger establishes that Earth in the then-present time is becoming a hotbed for interstellar crime. In Timeranger, the future Earth has alien criminals. So the future of Timeranger can easily be seen as the future of the Dekaranger world.

The two shows also create a highly logical progression for how Earth handles cosmic threats. In Timeranger, 30th century Earth has mastered time travel and advanced shrinking/compression technology to apprehend criminals without killing them. It is incredibly easy to headcanon in the Gokaiger/VS meta-continuity (where all Sentai exist in the same world) that the Space Police tech of Dekaranger eventually evolves into the Time Protection Bureau tech of the 30th Century. Also, Timeranger takes place just four years earlier in 2000. The sudden influx of Londerz prisoners in 2000 could easily be viewed by the galaxy as Earth's "first major wave" of high-tech cosmic crime, paving the way for the SPD to establish an Earth branch a few years later.

They're different jurisdictions, one handles space, the other handles time.

Today, in another episode of "Late 90s Sentai Is criminally underrated": GoGoV

This is such a gem of a series. Lovable cast of siblings that beheave like a true family (they fight among them but they love each other), inspiring motif, awesome model work, well-written focus episodes (I believe episode 27 is one of the best episodes I've ever seen in Sentai), AMAZING soundtrack and IMO one of the best reds. Matoi can be harsh and a bit of a jerk sometimes but he's driven and truly cares for people and his family. He's also a madman and really funny too. He's wonderfully well-rounded as a character and this edge makes him feel like a real person with flaws instead of a caricature. There was never another red like him.

Finished Gingaman!

I didn't know if I should make another thread since my previous one Is just two days old, but the finale moved me enough to warrant it. What a journey. When they came back to the forest after all they lived through, I genuinely started to contain my tears. And Moak! Am I an immature manchild for crying with series about men in spandex fighting rubber monsters made to sell toys to children?

My only gripe is that maybe Hyuuga felt a bit too absent from the last quarter of the series, but his journey ended up being satisfying regardless.

Man, I love Sentai so much.

Underrated season I think.

Do you think it was out of character or it made sense?

Of everything I have watched so far, I feel like these three shows are peak Ultra series. Doesn't mean the others aren't awesome, but these are the pinnacle.

If Shin Ultraseven happened (which sadly I don't think it will) which episodes do you think Anno would choose to remake?

Obviously the first episode, The Marked Town and the finale would be obligatory, but beyond that I'd like to know your guesses.

[Comic Excerpt] I feel like this panel (Injustice: Year Zero #4) is a less funny version of the original one (Batman/Captain America) and sometimes it seems the joke flies past a lot of people: That the Joker, who is a monster, would draw the line at being a Nazi just because he's patriotic
