Duplicate Photos Again backing up again n again
Hey everyone,
I have around 400–500 GB of photos/videos across on each 2 phones. I backed everything up to Immich successfully. After that, Immich detected around 60k duplicate photos, so I moved them to trash and permanently deleted them from the server.
But the issue is that whenever my phones sync again, those duplicate files get uploaded back to the server again.
I do not want to lose the photos from my phones, but I also want only one copy on the server.
What is the best way to handle this setup properly?
Would really appreciate some guidance from people 🙏 Thank You!

I’ve been using Immich for a while now and honestly, I love it. The app, the UI, everything feels really well made, so big respect to the devs for that.
But one thing that really annoys me is the backup.
I used Synology Photos for around 2 years and it just worked. I never had to think about it, photos would sync in the background automatically without any issues.
With Immich, I keep running into the same problem on both Android and iOS. Uploads don’t really continue unless I open the app. I have to keep going back into it again and again just to make sure everything syncs properly.
I’ve already tried turning off battery optimization, setting it to unrestricted, and allowing background activity, but nothing really fixes it.
I understand that Immich is still in development, and I’m not trying to compare it in a negative way. I just feel like reliable background backup should be a priority because it’s something most people expect, especially if they’re coming from apps like Synology Photos or Google Photos.
If this gets improved, Immich would honestly be perfect.
Is anyone else facing this or found a workaround???

Hey everyone,
I’ve got around 1.5 TB of photos and videos stored on my TrueNAS system (around 10 TB total storage), and I’ve been using Immich on it. It works great overall, but I’m facing one annoying issue. Automatic backups don’t work reliably unless I keep the app open, even after disabling battery optimization and allowing full background usage.
That’s where Synology Photos feels much better because background backup works smoothly.
So here’s what I’m trying to figure out:
I also have a Synology NAS with 1 TB storage, and I mainly want to use Synology Photos as the frontend app. Instead of storing everything on Synology, I want it to index and access my TrueNAS data through an SMB share, similar to how Immich supports external libraries.
My situation:
I have around 600 GB of mixed old and new photos still on my devices
I already have around 1.5 TB on TrueNAS
I don’t want to duplicate everything because Synology storage is limited
Ideally, I want to mount the TrueNAS SMB share and let Synology index it so I can use Synology Photos
What I’ve considered:
Backing up to Synology first and then moving it to TrueNAS, but that feels inefficient and messy
Mounting SMB on Synology, but I’m not sure if Synology Photos supports indexing external mounts
My question:
Is there any way to make Synology Photos work with external SMB mounted folders like TrueNAS shares?
Or any workaround, script, or Docker trick to make this setup possible?
I would really appreciate any ideas or setups you guys are using. Thanks in advance!
