DIY Timing Chain / Tensioner Realistic?

So I’m sitting about 4.55° chain stretch +/-, called around to several local euro shops and got quotes from $2,500 to $3,200 parts/labor/etc to do the job. Not surprisingly, I don’t love that…

How realistic is it for me to DIY? I’ve got tools, floor jack, jack stands etc and pretty competent mechanically. However I’ve never done this level of engine work before, closest would be intake manifold replacement and carbon cleaning the valves. Clearly not the same thing…

On the upside, I don’t have to drive this car every day so could take my time - I just don’t want to get in over my head and either destroy the engine, or have to get it towed somewhere to finish the job if I get stuck.

Thoughts? Really appreciate it fellas!

Checking Timing Chain Stretch OBDeleven - not sure I’m doing it right?

OBDeleven showed up today, didn’t do any upgrades. only got it to check timing chain stretch, at least for now

I get the sense that I’m not doing this right…

Any suggestions or help? The engine was warmed up to middle of the temp and had been for some time, and the AC and headlights were turned off. The only options to change units was for kilometers from miles, but I did that.

Carbon cleaning, holy hell…

Got around to replacing my intake manifold, went ahead and cleaned the valves and the injectors, new seals on the injectors

The valves though man, my god… 126k and allegedly cleaned by VW under the prior owner at 80k

#3 and #4 were sludge with a carbon shell underneath, but #1 and #2 were basically all hard carbon…

Is it normally for them to get this funky at ~50k between cleanings? Or did VW do an ass job at 80k, or maybe something else going on?

1187P SBS won’t reliably run LE13300?

Got one of the 14” 1187P’s off of gunbroker, cleaned it up and put a new o’ring or whatever it’s called for the piston.

It’ll run the cheapest of low brass bird shot, buckshot, slugs, nicer buckshot, nice slugs as fast as you can pull the trigger.

But, Fed 8-pellet flight control (LE13300)… first two boxes it would fire but not cycle at all. I took her home, cleaned her meticulously again, another new oring.

Went back today with more of the 8-pellet flight control and first go it fired and fed the next round no problem, but then started not fully extracting the spent shell consistently. So seems like it’s getting better, but sucks bc it patterns with it so well but not reliable yet?

Any suggestions? Based on what I’ve read normally the 1187 sbs’s run high brass like flight control reliably, but not low brass bird shot. This one will run low brass and most high brass like a champ, just not the flight control?

P2015 Intake Manifold Replacement / Fuel Rail

Hi folks, I have the P2015 code and already tried the ECS dongle, code came back so looks like I’ve got to do the proper fix 😂

When looking at FCP Euro and other places for parts, I’ve noticed the disclaimer that you will need a new fuel rail to fit the new manifold if you don’t have the latest rail revision (believe PN ends in AB?).

I’m guessing that fuel rail I have is not the latest revision, and won’t be compatible. I’ve tried to take a pic of the PN, but since the rail appears to be almost as expensive as the Intake Manifold I want to be sure I need it… but we all know the worst thing is getting something torn down, only to realize you don’t have a part you need and then pay to expedite shipping and wait…

Any advice on parts / kits to do this job? I’ve scoured the interwebs and am very confident in my ability to do it, I just don’t want to over spend on parts I don’t need, or get deadlined for a few days if I don’t have everything I need when I start.

I’ve already replaced spark plugs and ignition coils, and will do the carbon scraping when I’m in there for Intake Manifold. Car is at 126k miles, anything else I should do?

Thank you!
