DIY Timing Chain / Tensioner Realistic?

So I’m sitting about 4.55° chain stretch +/-, called around to several local euro shops and got quotes from $2,500 to $3,200 parts/labor/etc to do the job. Not surprisingly, I don’t love that…

How realistic is it for me to DIY? I’ve got tools, floor jack, jack stands etc and pretty competent mechanically. However I’ve never done this level of engine work before, closest would be intake manifold replacement and carbon cleaning the valves. Clearly not the same thing…

On the upside, I don’t have to drive this car every day so could take my time - I just don’t want to get in over my head and either destroy the engine, or have to get it towed somewhere to finish the job if I get stuck.

Thoughts? Really appreciate it fellas!

Coilover update

I swear to god I will never touch suspension again in my life 😭😭 Ima jus stick to engine work everything was so rusty n every time I made progress rust or space would set me back 5 steps. When I finished I had a grinding noise but it was just my brake shield bent against my rotor.

The coilovers I got were silvers neomaxes, super low lit on swift springs. I think I’m lowered 2.25 inches but I’m just guessing, they ride amazing tho my only complaint is the end links clunk over small bumps, really believe that’s just user error tho. Thank you to everyone who gave suggestions and advice yall steered me into this direction w my gti and honestly couldn’t have got this car this far without yall help inna forum 🤞🏽🤞🏽

Womp womp

Just got home from work noticed the landscaper outside and 10 minutes later I get a knock on the door. I wish it didn’t put a hole in the hatch now I have to seal it somehow.

Soundaktor unplug/delete?

Searching for this results in a lot of posts and videos of mk7 and later mk6 gtis, however my 2011 looks significantly different than all the photos/videos. It seems to me that my car either doesn't have one or is completely inaccessible without removing the wipers/trim etc.

What am I missing?

Still going after the whistling sound

Hey guys a while ago I posted a video about this whistling sound, many of you recommended swapping out the DV which I did onto the GFB+ but the sound still persists. Current setup is IE CAI, HPA K04, ARM FMIC and GFB+ DV. Any suggestions before I do a smoke test?

bad DV? or simple boost leak

Car is on a k04 hybrid with the old GFB DV+ i had on the stock turbo. This reminds me of all the posts i see with a bad DV.

I also had installed an ARM intercooler but everything piping wise with that seems very snug.

Noise after coilover install

Has anyone ran into a noise similar to this after an install? I believe it’s coming from the left front side, I hear it when driving and especially when turning the steering wheel. I’m gonna lift it up tmrw and see if I missed anything but I’m positive I torqued everything down. The coilovers are silvers neomaxes and it came with adjustable end links as well

Advice for exhaust leak and replacement parts

I have a 2017 Jetta GLI that, after driving through a flooded road (I had no alternative), there is a loud roar coming from the center exhaust pipe. I can't see any cracks or other damage, but the heat shield obstructs seeing the top of that pipe. It's very loud, and my area's towns all have ordinances to seize vehicles that exceed x dBm (mostly to bust people running open header or straight piped). The OEM replacement is an integrated part (center exhaust pipe + catalytic converter + down pipe), and costs $1412.

I only have 66k miles on it and already upgraded the brakes, with plans to install an aftermarket intake and exhaust (and possibly the larger turbo down pipe). The performance exhaust systems are $1500-2200.

I know there are aftermarket center exhaust pipes... cut the old one out and attach new with clamps. I am still getting excellent boost and engine performance, no OBDII codes, but I've read those non-OEM pipes can be a headache.

Would anyone who had the exact or similar problem (ie the cat or muffler was damaged), please advise what option you chose? Again, I still want to put a full performance exhaust system on it, but don't have funds for that yet. I don't want to shoot myself in the foot.

MK6 GTI Water pump fitment

Hello all, I'm the proud owner of a manual (not sure if thats relevant here) MK6 (2012) GTI! Recently the water pump began to leak, just after 100k miles (lucky me!), since my oil cooler gasket had been neglected, i decided to go ahead and pull the intake manifold to gain access to both the water pump and oil cooler. I'll also be installing a FMIC and new suspension after this job, but that's besides the point.

Where the issues start is installing the new water pump. I'm not quite ready to install it yet, but i noticed that my stock plastic water pump has 1 electrical connector on the top of the water pump housing, and an additional one lower down, on the side of the thermostat. The new, metal, Gates waterpump i picked up from Rock Auto doesn't have this additional lower connector. How big of an issue is that and what's next for me?

I'm still somewhat new to cars, as this is my first car and I'm young, so bear with me. Google says that the duel connector is an indicator of a CBFA motor, but my VIN reads as a CCTA and the car itself has never even been in California, let alone sold there. Any help or advice is much appreciated, and any holes in info i left I'd be glad to fill.

Apologies, I'm a bit scrambled right now because this is a lot and I'm looking at not having a drivable car for another few days at least. Thanks tons!

Edit: Not sure how helpful it is, but this car was previously owned in the Northeast (US), and currently i own it in Texas.

Strange RPM-dependent “grrr / rotating” noise (1,000–3,000 RPM) after hybrid turbo installation – Any ideas?

Hi everyone,
I’m from Japan, so I apologize if my English isn’t perfect.
I’m looking for advice about a strange noise on my 2019 Golf GTI MK7.5 DSG (EA888 Gen 3).
The car has:
Mamba hybrid turbo (IS20 compressor / IS38 turbine)
RacingLine intercooler
RacingLine catch can
Stage 2 ECU tune
Symptoms
A “grrr / rotating / fluttering” noise appears between 1,000 and 3,000 RPM.
The sound follows engine RPM exactly (gets faster as RPM increases and slower as RPM drops).
It is most noticeable when revving the engine in Park or Neutral.
In Drive with the brake applied, the noise is much less noticeable.
It is heard much more clearly inside the cabin, especially around the driver’s footwell/accelerator area.
I can also feel a slight vibration through the floor when the noise occurs.
What I’ve already checked
Removed the accessory belt → No change
Disconnected the Soundaktor → No change
Turbo actuator output test with VCDS → No abnormal noise
Wastegate adaptation completed successfully
Boost pressure is normal
No white smoke
Engine runs normally with full power
The noise started after the hybrid turbo installation. Since then, I’ve reinstalled and cleaned most of the turbo-related pipes myself because the original installation quality was poor.
At first I suspected the wastegate, but since the noise also occurs during free revving (with almost no boost), I’m no longer sure that’s the cause.
I’m wondering if it could be:
Turbo mounting bracket
Downpipe contact
Exhaust vibration
Fuel line resonance
Pipe or bracket touching the firewall
Something else related to the turbo installation
Has anyone experienced a similar RPM-dependent rotating/fluttering noise after installing a hybrid turbo or working around the turbo area?
I’ve attached a video. Please turn up the volume and listen around 1,000–3,000 RPM.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much!

Sunroof leak

I have been battling the dreaded sunroof leak for quite a while now and havent had the time to properly fix it. I have used a drain snake to no avail and pulled the A pillar off and reconnected the tubing, which I thought may have solved my problem. I was wrong.

Anyone had a similar issue and a temporary solution that worked well?

Been placing a tarp on top while the car is sitting but have no way to protect it from the rain while moving.

Any cooler aftermarket front bumpers?

Just got into a little fender bender (not my fault), and the front bumper will probably need replaced (according to body shop). Any recommendations on aftermarket ones that look better or should I just keep it stock?

How to code "City Lights" to DRL on MK6 GTI with OBDEleven?

Hey so my LED halo's failed and I temporarily want to use my city lights as DRL and was wondering if it's possible. I'm using fogs as DRL right now but would like to do the city lights as well. I don't think I see an option in OBDEleven and was wondering if anyone has manually coded it. I tried to search forums, and found one person saying you need to splice it to the side markers, but idk if that makes sense since side markers & city lights activate when turning the switch to the "on" position. Hoping someone can clear this up and help me as well as anyone else in the future thinking about the same thing.

So I got my AI agent to help me get coding instructions, I want to confirm if this makes sense to anyone before attempting anything. My car is a 2011 GTI with factory bi-xenons from Canada 🇨🇦 if that makes any difference.

OBDeleven coding to try

First create a backup of 09–Central Electrics and save the original long-coding string. Here are OBDeleven’s backup instructions.

Then open:

Control Units → 09 Central Electrics → Long Coding

Leave every unrelated bit unchanged:

Byte/bit Set to Purpose
Byte 24, Bit 7 ON DRLs as position/city lights
Byte 11, Bit 2 OFF if active Disables low-beam/xenon DRL
Byte 15, Bit 6 OFF if active Disables separate H15/factory DRL
Byte 14, Bit 1 OFF if active Disables fog-light DRL
Byte 26, Bit 3 OFF Allows DRLs with the switch at 0, rather than only Auto/ADL
Byte 27, Bit 2 OFF This is for a genuine OEM LED DRL module—not a W5W LED replacement

Atp my car needs a forcefield

I just seem to be a rock magnet! Ive filed 3 claims this year alone with progressive from rocks nailing my windshield. 1st time was a guy who decided he wanted half his truck to be in the emergency lane which flung a rock at me. 2nd time was a semi just gunning it up the on ramp. Which was last month btw. Then now today was a guy who decided itd be great to floor his truck on the same on ramp that happened in the previous incident. You guessed it, he kicked up a rock. Safe to say im gunna be avoiding that on ramp from now on
