As a career, it was going really good. I was young, I learned Python & JavaScript, I made projects, went to hackathons, and even won. I did freelance work where I had to build everything! The UI, backend, and frontend. It was my first experience in app development. I had only made websites previously, so it was tough. And I was being paid for what I had learned myself. This was the best feeling in the world.
I started building another project for practice as I had nothing to do. I realised something. That excitement was turning into boredom. I had pretty much learned every basic functionality that a website/app should have while doing that freelance work. The authentication, basic CRUD operations, DB handling, indexing, and many more things. So, doing those things again with a different name for the site/app was boring asf. I didn't do programming for this! It was never for money! It was never for building products!
So, I decided to learn C. When I told that to my fellow programmer friends, their faces were funny as hell. They were disappointed by my decision. Who learns C these days? And in Nepal? (I am not talking about the basic syntax you memorise in school/college.)
But I am happy. I am doing something new each day. I can literally feel the growth of my mind. I can feel it becoming a programmer's mind. I recently built a terminal text editor. Not a big project, but it was very rewarding and satisfying to build. I never copied code from AI. I designed the architecture. I was the one who wrote each and every line. Writing a small function in that project that worked gave me more satisfaction/dopamine than building a full-stack website using AI.
And this isn't just about AI. Web/app development was never my interest. I was fascinated by it because I was doing it for the first time.
What about the future? I have no idea. In today's time, one can no longer survive in the IT industry without using AI. We should be comfortable with AI and work together with it. But what I feel is we are forgetting the true intention of learning. It is never to build products or earn money. It is to sharpen your brain. Money will come along with it.
The brain is the only thing that we have to sell. So invest in it. Go through those hard times. It will be fun too.
If you have enough experience in programming alone, you can catch up to the AI race in no time. But if your mind isn't ready to think as a programmer and you are habituated to using AI, then it will be very difficult to come out of it.
I just wanted to share my experience. Hope this helps you clear your mind a bit in this "AI" time.
I am a recent 12 pass out. I am going to take BIT entrance exam. I was still confused on what to do and because of that I decided late. Only 10 days left for entrance exam and I am just starting to prepare for it. Any seniors who can tell their BIT entrance experience for colleges like Patan and ASCOL?
(Don't recommend me to go abroad instead of taking BIT. I have already figured out what to do in these 4 years)
