Absolutely heartbroken for my daughter

Today, I received word that my adopted daughter’s biological mother has died.

We adopted our 14yo daughter five years ago. She entered the foster system at a very young age because both of her parents were addicts. Parental rights had already been terminated and she had been living in a residential treatment center before she came to our home. Her dad tried to get clean and stay in her life and they talk occasionally, but her mother completely disappeared when she was about 3 years old after CPS became involved. Last I heard about her mother was that she was homeless with schizophrenia. My daughter does not really remember her mother. The first time her mother came up in conversation, she had a visceral reaction and described her mother as being like a wicked witch and described her in a very negative manner as if she was afraid of her. Both of her parents have violent histories. Her dad has been in and out of jail with the most recent charge being assault with a deadly weapon, and her mother has multiple arrests for domestic violence. But she does not have any specific memories of her mother, just pictures that we’ve been able to obtain from her biological family on her father’s side. Lately she has begun to speak about her mother in more positive terms and out of curiosity, but she never asks to find her or contact her.

My daughter has an intellectual disability and a neurodevelopmental disorder due to meth exposure in utero, and she has special needs in addition to CPTSD from abuse, neglect, and her time in the foster system. She’s had a very rough childhood and has been in crisis for most of her life. Last year was brutal, and we finally got her stable again just a couple months ago after two hospitalizations and many medication adjustments. She starts high school next week and she has been really excited about it.

We are currently on vacation and she has been having the time of her life. She has actually been getting along with my stepsons, and it’s been an incredible much needed bonding experience for our family.

We drove and we are a 16hr drive from home. I can’t tell her now. I can’t tell her and send her into what could be another crisis that far from home. I don’t know what to do. We are considering ending our trip early and going home so we can tell her sooner. But part of me thinks we should allow her to have a few more happy days before her world comes crashing down again. School is off next week. I’m calling her therapy team to arrange support. Her mother’s family is not going to have a funeral. We are considering seeing if we can arrange some kind of memorial service here where our family can support her and creating a little memorial garden at our home.

I don’t really know what to do. Does anyone have some advice for us?

No longer obese with pics

I posted about my progress not too long ago, and someone asked for pics. Wegovy helped me lose 30lbs since January, and I’m still going strong. I hope to lose another 44lbs. I was initially scared to post progress pics because I’m a little self-conscious, and I don’t really take pictures of myself very often so I had to go back 5 years to find a before picture. This progress is really important to me because I just turned 40 years old, and I wanted to get healthy for my 40th birthday. My goal is to live longer for my kids and to get active so I can be healthy as I age.

Starting weight was about 220. Current weight is 189. Goal weight is 145.

I use ChatGPT to help me count calories and it also makes healthy snack suggestions. I started with weight watchers and used to see a nutritionist monthly, but I’ve stopped logging everything in an app as I’ve found it’s easier to just tell ChatGPT what I’ve eaten in the day and let it count calories for me. I prioritize protein, fiber, and hydration. I aim for 100g protein and 25g fiber. I don’t always hit the numbers but I try to get as close as I can in any given day. Hydration is the hardest for me. I’m told to try and drink 80-100oz water but I usually only hit 40-50oz, so I’m still working on it.

No longer obese

Today I weighed myself and I came in at 188.8. I’ve lost 30 pounds since January, and I’m no longer obese! I’m so excited. Progress has been slow. I’ve only lost about 1 lb per week on average. But steady. I just hope I can keep it up this time. I’m only 43lbs away from my goal weight!

Finally bit the bullet and applied for IBR

I’ve been on the SAVE forbearance for a while trying to figure out my next move. I was tempted to wait and see if there was any last minute litigation before everyone was forced off the SAVE forbearance, but I really want to get going on making payments again. I’m 12 years in on repayments and I’ve never missed a payment, and I don’t like letting my loans just sit there accruing interest.

It actually turned out much better than expected, and I feel good about the choice. IBR doesn’t consider the spouse’s income if you file separately, so that’s what we did. The downside is that interest will cause the balance to balloon a bit as there is no longer an interest subsidy, which will make the tax bomb higher. On the plus side, my monthly payment turned out to be less than it was on SAVE because we were able to file separately. Loans will be forgiven in 2039, so we have 13 years to plan ahead and save for the tax bomb.

Good luck, everyone. Consider filing separately if that’s still an option for you. It was a huge game changer for us.

KC in ep 8

When he saw that Melanie was about to embarrass herself, he immediately got up and stopped her. That’s a good man. He really looked out for Melanie in that moment. I’ve honestly liked him from the start. He has always seemed so sweet and genuine. I hope I’m not wrong!
