One of my favorite historic buildings on Liteyny Avenue in Saint Petersburg.

One of my favorite historic buildings on Liteyny Avenue in Saint Petersburg.

I always slow down a bit when passing this corner near Pestel Street.
The facade has that classic late-19th century Saint Petersburg look — heavy details, tall windows, and a kind of quiet confidence you rarely see in modern buildings.

What I like most is how the entire block still feels “alive” instead of turning into a museum piece. Trams, traffic, shops, people rushing by — and above all that, this massive historic facade watching the city for more than a century.

Saint Petersburg can feel cold sometimes, but buildings like this give the city its soul.

Nevsky Prospekt, Saint Petersburg

One of those rare streets that feels alive at any hour.
Historic facades, trolley wires, endless traffic, and suddenly — the old City Duma tower rising above everything.

Saint Petersburg never really tries to impress you.
That’s exactly why it does.

Smolny Cathedral at sunset, Saint Petersburg.

One of those places that looks unreal in person — especially from the Neva side when the sky starts changing colors. The architecture is pure Rastrelli: light blue walls, white details, and those massive silver-blue domes rising above the trees.

Hard to believe this masterpiece was started back in the 18th century.

Saint Petersburg really knows how to mix history, weather, and drama into one view 🙂

Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge at night, Saint Petersburg 🇷🇺

Took this photo during an evening walk in Saint Petersburg.
The Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge looks completely different at night — quiet water, reflections, and that old steel architecture glowing over the Neva.

Hard to believe this bridge first opened back in 1911.

A lot of sauna kits come with oddly huge stones

Yeah, a lot of “starter stones” that come with sauna kits are more decorative than practical 😄
Once you add more medium-sized stones around the elements, the heater usually performs much better and the löyly gets softer and more even.

Just keep some airflow between the stones — packed too tight is almost as bad as too empty.

One of the coolest industrial-era brick buildings in Saint Petersburg — Freyberg Workshops (1898)

Hidden near Troitsky Avenue, this red-brick building was built in 1898 for the workshops of N. E. Freyberg.
Architect: Анастасий Рейнбольдт
I really love this kind of old industrial architecture in Saint Petersburg — massive brickwork, arched windows, decorative details and even a small tower with a clock/weather vane on top.
What makes it special is that it still feels authentic. No glossy reconstruction, no fake “historic” look — just real late-19th-century industrial Petersburg.
The building stands at:
Troitsky Ave., 6
13th Krasnoarmeyskaya St., 7
Dublensky Lane, 1x
The amount of brick detailing here is honestly insane when you look closely.

Saint Petersburg has hundreds of famous palaces… but these industrial buildings often feel even more atmospheric.

St. Petersburg’s Alexandrinsky Theatre looks unreal in person

Took this photo near the National Alexandrinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.
One of the oldest drama theatres in Russia, opened in 1832 and designed by Carlo Rossi.

The proportions, columns and sculptures look even more impressive when you stand right in front of it. On cloudy days the building feels строгий and monumental, but with sunlight it suddenly looks almost Mediterranean.

St. Petersburg has many famous landmarks, but this theatre is one of those places that quietly reminds you how architectural details used to matter.

BDT Theater in Saint Petersburg looks incredible on a gray day

Took this photo near the Bolshoi Drama Theater (BDT) in Saint Petersburg.
The mix of classic architecture, cloudy weather, bridges, and traffic feels very “real Petersburg” to me.

One of those places that looks dramatic even on an ordinary day. 🇷🇺📷

Eliseev Brothers Trading House on Nevsky Prospekt, Saint Petersburg

One of the most recognizable buildings on Nevsky Prospekt — the historic Eliseev Brothers Trading House at Nevsky 56.

Built in the early 1900s, it became famous for its massive stained-glass facade, sculptures, and luxury food hall. Even today it still feels different from the surrounding buildings — almost like a piece of old European Art Nouveau dropped into the middle of Saint Petersburg.

I always like how the details change depending on the light and weather. On sunny evenings the green metalwork and sculptures look especially dramatic.

The building survived revolutions, wars, and the Soviet period, and it’s still one of the landmarks people stop to photograph while walking along Nevsky.

Have any of you visited the Eliseev store inside?

Trinity Cathedral (Troitsky Izmailovsky Sobor), Saint Petersburg

Took this photo recently while walking through Saint Petersburg.
The scale of the cathedral is even more impressive in real life.

Small apartment sauna with a Harvia 3.6 kW heater — simple setup, surprisingly good steam 🔥

After many years working with saunas, I still think a small well-designed home sauna is better than a huge overheated room with poor ventilation.
This is my compact apartment sauna setup with a Harvia 3.6 kW electric heater. The sauna is small, but heats evenly, reaches temperature quickly, and is very comfortable for 1–2 people.
A few things that made the biggest difference:
Proper ventilation
Correct bench height
Enough stone mass for softer steam
Good insulation behind the paneling
Not chasing extreme temperatures
A lot of people think apartment saunas cannot produce real löyly, but with the right heater setup and airflow, they absolutely can.
The Harvia 3.6 kW unit works well for compact spaces because it doesn’t overload the electrical system while still giving stable heat. For small apartment saunas, I often find balanced airflow more important than simply adding more power.
This sauna became one of the best parts of the apartment — especially during winter evenings. 🔥
Curious what temperatures and humidity levels people here prefer for smaller home saunas?
