I still respect Mihawk nerds, but No one can’t deny it: Mihawk wants to be as great as Roger so bad.
- First “power scaling” title and, on top of that, the “Number 1” title
- A title that’s actually confirmed time and time again by Oda’s words
- gets glazed everywhere
- Is acknowledged by all the top-tier characters
- Has a heritage that isn’t just headcanon but a fundamental building block of One Piece (Straw Hat)
- Is overtaken by the main character at the end of the series; Mihawk is overtaken by a side character right in the middle of the story
- His legacy is the treasure the series is named after; Black Blades aren’t sought after by anyone

I’ve been thinking about this, and it really makes sense. Remember: Joyboy was the first pirate ever. All piracy is ultimately Joyboy’s legacy. In a way, all pirates are following in his footsteps more or less. That means the Jolly Roger flag MUST have been created by Joyboy, and the basic artistic concept is his. Consequently, it only makes sense that the Jolly Roger flag is named after Joyboy.
“Coincidentally,” the name Roger is also that of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger; it’s possible he was a descendant of Joyboy.
And last but not least: “Jolly” as a first name sounds very similar to “Joy.” It sounds really, really close, as if it were his actual name, and because “Jolly” was always so cheerful, people called him Joyboy.
What do you think?
“Jolly Roger”: Jolly -> sounds similar to Joy; Roger -> a reference to the last Pirate King and his possible relative, Joyboy, the first pirate
This Sanji>Zoro lowkey ragebait but it doesn't make a huge difference imo
