Over the last two weeks i've been digging through archives of early 4chan discussion surrounding the Idaho murders between the dates of Nov. 12–Dec. 30, 2022. Looking at repeated theories, writing habits, files, timelines, and how the same stories evolve across changing IDs. It was a lot more interesting than I expected as patterns started to emerge.

A necessary disclaimer: I am not claiming any of these anonymous IDs were Bryan Kohberger, or anyone else. What I’m looking at is continuity between different "Personas" being ran by a single individual, and what information those accounts shared.

The main pre-arrest dataset is:

• 973 captured posts
• 50 distinct 4chan IDs (manually selected by me)
• 67,000+ words of text

Including roughly 515 InsideLooking comments (~6,205 words).

So altogether we’re looking at roughly 90,000 words of relevant material.

Cluster 1: 16-ID “case builder” cluster

This is by far the strongest recurring user-group:

About 30,363 words fall within this cluster.

The combined “character” behind the material is very recognizable.

They treat the case almost like an ongoing personal research project. They make/save custom maps and screenshots, refer back to “my posts,” “my work” and “my getaway route,” repeatedly revisit earlier conclusions, and carry theories across new threads.

They combine fairly ordinary research, house layout, terrain, cameras, escape routes, victim movements, with much stranger claims involving “tapping in,” impressions, energy signatures, visions/feels, etc. (Verbiage you encounter in the VS community)

They are heavily focused on:

• the offender’s route
• wooded approaches/escape paths
• where a vehicle was parked
• surveillance of the house beforehand
• avoiding cameras
• changing/containing bloody clothing
• phone anti-forensics
• victim selection
• the offender psychologically enjoying the planning process
• LE/FBI supposedly hiding or mishandling information
• the possibility of an experienced or serial offender

And the vocabulary is extremely distinctive.

Unique words in this cluster:

But I think the repeated word-strings are even more interesting than isolated vocabulary:

where he stashed his car — 3x across changing IDs

The story itself also travels with the IDs. Honestly, several of these individual ID's have personas of their own that people have made Youtube/Tiktoks about (wizardanon, Fratanon, Madlad, etc) you can look them up, but they haven't been cross-checked in this way.

The recurring version is roughly:

offender scouts a particular victim/house, approaches from the rear/wooded area, enters around the second-floor slider, something goes wrong with the original plan, moves between floor, exits through the same general area, follows a concealed route, reaches a vehicle parked/stashed away, contains or changes bloody gear.

An earlier version argues that the downstairs roommate was the intended target and that the upstairs killings happened because the original plan had been ruined.

Several days later, the same broader cluster changes that explanation: now the downstairs woman was supposedly mistaken for the intended victim, and the actual target was upstairs, meaning the offender “had to go upstairs.”

Standout comment: ID said the killer was “fit, and about 6 foot.” That post is from Nov. 21/22, 2022, before any profile was released to the public

Even a wrong theory can become a useful fingerprint though.

The claimed motive also becomes surprisingly consistent:

select a particular woman, watch/study her, build an elaborate plan, derive satisfaction from controlling and successfully executing that plan, refuse to abandon the chosen target once things go wrong.

Sex is usually described as secondary rather than the main motive. The recurring emphasis is control, victim selection, planning, ego and the satisfaction of “pulling it off.”

Rage usually appears as the reaction when that carefully constructed plan gets disrupted.

Cluster 2: LP2e3IEW + d3wOiXsy (“Infoanon”)

This is a very different character.

Instead of saying “here’s what I figured out”, this poster's is essentially saying:

“I know things you don't because I have a source.”

LP2e3IEW actually calls itself “the infoanon.”

This smaller cluster is 63 posts, 2,624 words, spanning Nov. 21 to Dec. 14.

The recurring character is very different from Cluster 1: instead of presenting research or intuition, it claims to have privileged local information. LP2e3IEW literally calls itself “infoanon,” says it lives locally, refers to earlier threads, and claims police have a “main suspect” it doesn’t want to reveal yet. It also says the offender had been scoping the residence for months.

Three weeks later, d3wOiXsy appears and explicitly says “I posted a few weeks ago in the earlier threads” and that people had called it “infoanon.” It says its source gets occasional information through “workplace privilege.”

Its recurring storyline becomes:

• offender had watched/scouted the house beforehand
• one woman was the intended target
• wooded areas around the house were important for approach/escape
• sliding-door entry
• Ethan supposedly killed first
• Ethan supposedly found in the second-floor hallway
• front-door exit
• evidence possibly dumped along an isolated route
• police supposedly had a local suspect they were secretly focused on despite public statements

Cluster 3: quN025C8, the local-rumor poster

This one sounds different from both groups above.

The language isn't mystical and it isn't “I have an inside LE source.”

“This is what people around here are saying.”

The poster uses phrases such as “the rumor here in town” and “the story going around.”

And this account produced some of the most interesting early information in the entire archive.

On Nov. 15, it stated specifically:

“The weapon was a ka-bar.”

The first mainstream Ka-Bar-specific report I found was the following day but rumors were flying around town I'm sure.

The same evening, the poster described surviving roommates being unable to contact roommates and calling friends to the house before police were called.

MPD did not publicly confirm the general friends-before-911 sequence until Nov. 20.

InsideLooking: the authoritative Reddit voice

InsideLooking is interesting because it barely resembles anyone from the entire archive linguistically.

*I strongly believe Insidelooking was someone from Law Enforcement, but I'm open to having my mind changed. I did not find any proof this account was active after 12/30.

Some word Patterns:

Speculation — 37x
imo — 28x
No connection — 18x
No suspect at this time — 14x
official sources only — 8x

Account uses very short declarative statements and phrases, sometimes even repeatedly like:

“Stick to facts.”
“No connection.”

"Official Sources only"
“LE states…”

Yet it also advances very definite theories of its own.

One recurring route claim was essentially XE first → MK afterward, which appears to conflict with later investigative reconstruction.

Harder continuity evidence

There is also exact byte-identical custom images appearing under changing IDs.

Several apparent ID handoffs occur within minutes of one another.

One of the strongest is:

z/2THkG9 + FtM9Nl+/

z/2THkG9 says it saves screenshots of what it writes and will “repost my caps.”

That ID disappears.

A little over two minutes later, FtM9Nl+/ appears in the next thread carrying the same material.

The two IDs share numerous exact custom images and even a long essentially verbatim block of text.

Other handoffs have similarly short gaps, around 88 seconds, 11 minutes, 16 minutes, 32 minutes, etc. while preserving custom material, theories and unusual language.

Again, none of this establishes that any of these anonymous accounts belonged to Bryan Kohberger or any other identifiable person. Many more possibilities exist to mine further, from an educational perspective.

One of the strongest recurring storyline fingerprints is the victim order this early in the case. At least 11 of the 16 IDs in the main cluster independently preserve some version of Ethan/the male being attacked first, followed by Xana/the woman beside him, before the killer goes upstairs. Early IDs identify Xana as the intended target and describe the upstairs murders as rage/revenge after Maddie/Kaylee somehow “messed up” or “cock blocked” the original plan. Later IDs keep the same E/X-first sequence but change the explanation: the woman beside Ethan was supposedly mistaken for the real target, forcing the killer to “go upstairs.” Even separate Cluster 2 accounts repeat an Ethan/Xana-first → upstairs-target sequence.

The physical sequence seemed to remain remarkably stable while the explanation for it changes.

Actual target = 2nd floor, offender expected her to be in bed with Ethan, Ethan killed first, realizes the woman beside him is the wrong woman, now he “has to go upstairs.”

6X+wVdCTis the transition point: it still says the offender entered and “ended the lad straight away,” but starts wondering whether “blonde” was actually the target and the brunette in bed was a mistaken identity.

Byz/2THkG9 and FtM9Nl+/,: Ethan/the lad is killed, the woman wakes, the offender realizes “it was NOT who he was expecting,” and “he had to go upstairs.” FtM then says the actual target was likely one of the upstairs women.

That revised mistaken-identity/upstairs-target theory is then carried by at least nine IDs in the broader 16-ID stream: 6X+wVdCT, shtWfqWH, z/2THkG9, FtM9Nl+/, MhAsSevj, kvOyGia0, aBAU5wOA, Lra/5CwN, and oYlTVKOs.

An ID changing between threads does not itself mean anything. The connections above are based on combinations of chronology, repeated language, theory inheritance, self-reference and exact reused custom files. There are real negative controls. Some IDs directly reply back and forth to each other within the same thread, so those clearly represent separate posters at that moment.

Random posts and users become much less random when you analyze them at scale. The evidence suggests that at least one, and possibly a small number of highly active posters repeatedly posted a variety of information, intentionally acted as different "Personas", responded to eachother, and possibly even themselves while engaging with the discourse online.

It’s clear that what was once a great sub, one that encouraged digging, competing theories, open discussion, and had a lot of genuinely productive contributors over the years who genuinely found some great leads, has turned into a fragile, narrow minded echo chamber.

Go back and compare the quality and range of discussion from three/four years ago to what gets posted now. The difference is stark.

At this point, I don’t see that sub producing many new discoveries or meaningful discussions about the case. Instead, there’s an increasingly hostile attitude toward anyone who still has questions about parts of the case they feel haven’t been adequately explained. Calling people “Probergers,” mocking anyone who continues digging, and treating curiosity or disagreement as evidence that someone with questions, or who questions the state isn’t a critical thinker.

People can pat each other on the back and feel validated because everyone around them agrees, but consensus within a heavily filtered community isn’t the same thing as being objectively correct. Cases like this benefit from people asking uncomfortable questions, checking claims, finding documents, and challenging assumptions, possibly for all of time. Shutting that down in favor of a herd mentality doesn’t make a community more credible.
