How do I secure a network that has IOT devices and roommates, computers that may be compromised with RAT malware

I’m trying to reset my home network and keep it secure. Need some advice.

Someone was downloading, pirate software, and paste some sketchy commands into terminal. By “someone” I mean “me” . Anyway, I’ve got a brand, new router and modem that hasn’t been hooked up yet. But they’re just garbage level product from spectrum. I would like to set something up so that each person has a node or a connect to themselves but isolated from the rest of the network.

The more I look into what products I might want the more confused I start to get. Also, I need to set up an IOT network because I don’t want my IOT devices to potentially infect other things..

Another question I have is if it’s worthwhile to get a TDS or firewall (a physical one) and which devices would be ones that I should consider.

The guy who found the malware and somewhat eradicated it said it was a very complex and dastardly one that has three parts that masquerade system software, get into the firmware and will travel through AirDrop and Bluetooth. Changing timestamps and stuff to hide what they’re doing and masquerading as system processes.

I know some of the people out there are probably just crazy but when I start researching, I find people who have gotten this on their networks and just cannot seem to clear it out. I think some of them are just being paranoid, but I think others are actually experiencing..

Right now, the new modem and router have not been hooked up to the network. I’m thinking about getting a new Apple ID and wiping my phone. Because this malware doesn’t really do anything malicious other than ship all your data out. It’s very hard to detect. It’s about being incognito and providing offset to whoever wants to remote into you later..

I figure I’ll block all connections with little snitch. And only approve the ones that I review as safe. I believe the malware is 3crypt RAT or a similar variant.

I’m overwhelmed and not sure even which step to begin on. And just for clarity, I’m not asking anything about if I was hacked. I’m trying to figure out the best way to build a secure network moving forward from this.

Learned my lesson. I know what I did wrong so please offer advice and not just tell me how stupid I am. Do not use pirated software. It is extremely dangerous.

For 20 years, I’ve been using cracked software. Usually programs or games that I’m only gonna use for a short time and for whatever reason didn’t think they were worth buying. Unfortunately, I hadn’t kept up with just how brutally effective. Some of the new malware has become.

Yeah. I know I know. Only a moron would paste something into terminal. I own that. It’s been a real nightmare. And I fell into that deluded group that thinks Mac’s don’t get viruses or malware..

I’ve got journals, photos and a bunch of personal documents on a Drive that I’m sure was connected to the computer while it was infected. Is there anything I can do to recover files? Mostly photographs followed by PDFs and word documents.

I just got bit defender and malware bytes (paid versions, no more shady download for me)

I appreciate it. I know there’s a rash of this dumb shit going around so if you still think that pirate software is OK to use, you’re gonna end up learning the hard way. I wish I had paid attention..

Thank you guys. Eternally grateful for any advice. Apparently the infection was sometime in April of this year. Mods, please delete this if it breaks the rules. I don’t think it does.

Got charged the monthly fee after canceling on the app

So last month I received the $49 yearly charge. And I hadn't been using it at all so I decided to just take the loss and cancel it. I used the app and canceled.

This month they show up on my bill again. $25 monthly fee membership. And now when I go in on the web to try to cancel it errors out and says "forbidden"

I'm not impressed. I would suggest that you don't sign up for this gym if you ever intend to cancel because they make it really hard .

Water heater problem (rheem, fire issue)

So the hot water was off today at first it tepid and then cold. The breaker had tripped so I went to the control panel it said to open it up and hit the reset button when I looked for instructions online. However when I opened it up I could smell burned in insulation and when I opened it up whatever short-circuited had literally melted all three of those wires on the circuit board off and the only thing holding it in place was melted in insulation

Is this normal for a water heater to go like this ? It's about a decade old but still I just never expected such a catastrophic failure. I feel lucky that the house didn't catch fire or something.

Figured I'd ask you guys how common this is and if it's not common, what could be the cause. Thanks very much

Was trying to figure out an issue with a Bluetooth TV and I downloaded wonderfind Bluetooth search from the App Store. Can't figure out what one item is

I searched the web for the "LS dis server" but no results. My roommate is able to find two of them that seemed to blink in and out of view.

Right now we're killing all power to certain rooms because we want to find out what this is. And we can get as close to 10 feet to it using the Bluetooth search app but can't figure it out .

Would appreciate some help we are going nuts figuring it out

Freight and wholesale questions New England area

I'm in New England, Maine to be specific and I'm getting my order together. I want to get it sent out pretty quickly. I've been buying from a location in Wisconsin I've been pretty happy but with freight getting more expensive it seems like I could save a few hundred by ordering someplace closer to home.

Anyone have experience ordering from different areas of the country and cost associated?

Anyone have any suggestions on a good wholesaler, not proline necessarily, just regular 1.4 . I've been looking at badabing. I've seen some good comments about OFO but I wasn't sure where they were located. A quick search couldn't find the information. I'm sure someone here knows.

Depending on the feedback regarding shipping costs and freight I may stick with Wisconsin another year. Kate has been awesome to work with.

Thanks everybody much appreciated!
