What would you do with this space?

It’s less than 35 cm wide. I thought about bookshelves, a reading space for my kid (I don’t think it’ll work with how small the space is), a place to storage towels and bedding, some decorative items. I’m a bit lost.

I always buy books as gifts for birthdays presents. Would you prefer something else for your kid?

I have no shame in saying I’m a nerd. Have always been. Books have always been my favourite present to give and to receive. As a kid and as an adult. Now I have a kid and I realised I assumed the same was true for everyone. My kid loves books, too. And a though he has more than enough toys, we definitely spurge on books. If he asks for another toy I usually say no, but with books I usually get them.

Now he started having birthday parties and I’m getting these kids books too. That and a nice card. But came across a post from someone else here in Reddit and made me think about it. This other person was complaining about having to spend around £30 in a toy for the birthday parties. I’m spending way less buying books. As a parent, will you enjoy a toy more than a book as a present? I really try to get books my kid already loves that are not that popular (I wouldn’t gift a copy of the gruffalo unless I explicitly know the kid doesn’t have it).

Anyway, I will probably keep buying books as gifts for the kids of my friends as they know me, but I may start buying some toys for the kids from nursery if that’s the parent’s expectation.

My kid was not invited to his friend birthday party and it’s breaking my heart

Basically as it says in the title. There is this kid at nursery my kid loves. He talks about him, he missed him a lot when he moved to the next room a few months earlier than him. Now they are back together and have been for a couple of months as my kid also got moved to the following room. We were out for two weeks on holidays and today I noticed some of the kids have invitations in the place where they leave stuff for parents to take home. I asked the teacher if it probably was that my kid didn’t get it because he was on holiday and she sad she cannot get involved because of nursery policy on who gets invited and who doesn’t. She just said they didn’t remove any invitations until the date of the party has passed. I feel absolutely mortified thinking my kid will miss the birthday party of his friend but I don’t think we have any way of finding out if it was deliberate that he was not included or we just missed the invite for being on holiday (let’s say they put it in the right place and it got misplaced or something). I know it’s something small and he won’t even know but it makes me quite sad. Just wanted to share in case you had a similar experience. Got context: the birthday party is this weekend.
