Help troubleshooting Shanghai 400 + HC-110 development

Hi everyone,

I just developed a roll of Shanghai 400 using HC-110 at 1+31. This was the second use of the same developer solution, and I noticed a pretty big difference between my first and second tanks.

I’m trying to figure out what might have gone wrong with the Shanghai negatives. I followed the development time recommended by the Massive Dev Chart app, so I’m not sure where the problem came from.

A few theories I have:

  • I may have exposed the film incorrectly, especially since I shot it with a Reto Pan camera.
  • I may not have agitated the developer enough, or perhaps my agitation was too gentle/short.
  • Since this was the second use of the HC-110 solution, maybe the developer had lost some activity.
  • There could also have been a difference in temperature or agitation between the two tanks.

I’ll attach some pictures for reference. In the last slide, you can see the comparison: Ilford HP5 Plus 400 on the left (first tank) and Shanghai 400 on the right (second tank).

What do you think could have caused such a significant difference? Is it more likely to be exposure, agitation, developer exhaustion, or something else?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
