Is there a lore reason on why Nina loses all her breast mass after this episode? Did she take out her implants ?

I always found Johann's behavior to be oddly childlike, though I think that's the point.

He's deeply emotionally stunted and repressed and though he's highly intelligent and cold blooded, which makes him come off as "mature", his behavior, mentality, and actions show the opposite.

I love his first meeting as an adult with Tenma where he tells him, half proud, half taunting, that he murdered the director and doctors for his sake, then snickering at his horror and insisting it was his fault he did it.

Doing this seconds after calling him a father figure is like a rebellious teenager crying out for attention. It's the usual childlike resentment of a kid towards his parents, "I never asked to be born", in this case it would be "I never asked to be saved by you". So obviously it's Tenma's responsibility to take him out now.

This whole scene is Johann acting out and asking for a scolding, the scolding being Kenzo putting a bullet through his brain. This happens again with the scattered messages he leaves for Tenma's eyes only, always some variation of "Look at me!" and "Help me!". It seems like he's just taunting him with them at first, but it's easy to see there is genuine distress behind it, or at least that's how I interpret it. Johann needs to die but can't do it on his own, and he only trusts Tenma or Nina to do it.

It's the "Look at me!/Sehen Sie mich!" that I find especially interesting. Johann's need to be seen by Tenma, which reinforces that his entire existence is a plea to be allowed to exist as a human being, when he's confined in this role of Monster. Johann needed to be forgiven, but most importantly he needed to be acknowledged.

Johann's immaturity is best portrayed by how he shamelessly targets children. The way he pushes children to suicide, the sheer, indiscriminate malice in his actions, what that says to me is that he never evolved past their age. He doesn't care that he's killing children because there is not enough distance between those children and himself- or rather, there is just as much distance between them as there is between Johann and an adult person. Johann is stuck in a state where he was never allowed to be a child but he could never become an adult either.

Those shots of Johann surrounded by laughing children, like he's basking in an innocence that can't fully reach him. It feels like he's yearning for it too, in a way. When he's playing with those boys and one of them claims he wants to simply destroy the world, Johann's only reaction is an empty smile.

..the only way it could be more explicit is if the mangaka added a short note that said "Johann has the same mindset as a hurt child lashing out at the world at random."

There is more to be said about Johann yearning for love and innocence in his scenes with Karl. The only time he shows empathy towards someone who is not Nina is with Karl- some argue they were crocodile tears but I harshly disagree. Of course, he still manipulated Karl, but that doesn't negate the fact the crying was genuine. But my point is that the thing that brings him to tears is Karl's own yearning for childhood and a family's love, as well as a sense of belonging. We don't hear the full conversation but we can assume it's what it was mainly about using Karl's dialogue shortly before the fade out.

Johann's also pretty impulsive. He's prone to change of plans despite seeming always one step ahead, and when he recovers his memory, or finds Bonaparta is alive, he's extremely quick to throw everything else away. When Tenma and Nina won't behave the way he planned, he takes a child hostage. This also shows a certain immaturity and impatience to me, when his carefully crafted reality crumbles, he quickly becomes desperate.

And finally, when Johann tricks Jan, he uses his Mother's love against him. Now, while Johann was obviously saying those things to manipulate him, I think it's extremely interesting that he specifically picked maternal love for it, when he could've easily went down the romantic route Jan clearly craved. It's not picked at random, and says something about what Johann craves for himself when playing the role of Anna. In a way, especially since he's dressed as Anna, I feel like he's saying the words he wishes were true about himself. When he asks Tenma at the end, "who did my mother mean to get rid of?", it makes me think of this scene with Jan Suk. How much he wished to be loved by her.

And I mean...his "name" comes from a children's picturebook. His entire story is based off a fairytale.

There is so much more to be said about this, throughout the entirety of Monster, hurt children are shown and focused on. Child abuse and identity are what I would call the core themes of the show. We see it through Dieter, Johann, Grimmer, Bonaparta, Roberto, Nina, Tenma, that little girl whose mom was murdered by the military guy in episode 5. Every character to some extent relates to children, children being hurt, children being stripped of identity, and how it damages and shapes you throughout life. It also shows how you can grow from it and learn to be kind, though. But I simply thought the most touching part of this anime was Johann himself, and his inability to move past his broken childhood.

Just some of my thoughts on his character. I don't think it's groundbreaking and I'm sure it's been said before, but hey, it's my first time in the fandom and I'd like to hear what you guys think, if you have thoughts to share as well.

Some fanart I made !!! I like this anime a lot weewooweewooo, also at the end, does anyone else like Mob Psycho 100 ? They have some similar messages despite the glaring tone difference. I would love for Mob to meet Grimmer or Johann.

P.S if any fanart here counts as spoilers just remove this post or tell me and I'll flag it, I think it's pretty vague without context so I don't think any of this is spoilers. Bur I know some people have more strict definition for it than others

I really like these two characters but there's not that much canon content of them, especially for Minori. So I wanted to make a comic about their lives after Mob defeats Mogami, with slight canon divergences on the aftermath of the fight to make it work. I'll have chapter 2 ready soon, the story should last anywhere from 8 to 10 chapters long...but yeah, I wanted to share for the few mogamiheads and fewer minoriheads out there :]

Little unrelated doodle at the end, I would've loved to see Mezato and Reigen interact in the anime...I think they'd get along well.
