MDA - Scandium Canada

MDA - Scandium Canada

Who else thinks (like me) that MDA will 100% use Scandium Canada’s alloy in their satellites?

To me, it just makes so much sense, especially since MDA is building satellites in Montreal, while Scandium Canada is developing proprietary Al-Sc alloys in Quebec. MDA is also currently building the next-generation RADARSAT replenishment satellite in Montreal.

Aluminum-scandium alloys offer a combination of low weight, high strength, improved thermal properties, better fatigue resistance, and excellent dimensional stability, which makes them particularly interesting for aerospace and satellite applications.

SCD is located in one of the world’s best aerospace ecosystems, full of opportunities.

The U.S. Is Waking Up to Scandium

Today, Trump announced a series of investments and plans for their new critical minerals strategy.

He briefly talked about scandium and called it “one of the world’s most valuable aerospace and defense materials.” He also referred to SRL (Australian mine), the company that Lockheed Martin already has an MOU with.

https://youtu.be/V6VgPfBK8gQ?t=755

It’s good to see the U.S. and key sectors recognizing this mineral, which is still in its infancy. As most of us already know, there is currently no real supply chain for scandium, so once supply is unlocked, demand will follow.

SCD is especially interesting since they probably hold the best scandium-aluminium alloy patents. Their mine is also the only primary scandium source in North America.

But this news is simply good for the scandium market as a whole. So let's just take it.

There’s also this that popped up today:
https://ca.usembassy.gov/freedom250-critical-minerals-and-mining/

It says that Scandium Canada has developed two patent-pending aluminium-scandium alloys with enhanced properties for advanced manufacturing that are currently being qualified by Canadian and U.S. companies, including defense contractors in the United States.

Exciting times. It's only the start

CBC/Radio-Canada Mentions Scandium Canada as a CNETE Industry Partner

https://ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/2270878/nouveau-centre-transfert-technologique-shawinigan

Scandium Canada being specifically mentioned in this announcement.

The Quebec government is investing $20 million to create Espace MCS+, a new applied research and technology transfer center focused on critical and strategic minerals, advanced materials, electrification, and defense.

What stands out is that CNETE publicly identified Scandium Canada as one of its existing industrial clients. That means SCD is already collaborating with one of Quebec's leading applied research organizations and is part of the province's growing critical minerals ecosystem.

The new center will receive approximately $25 million in infrastructure and equipment, including capabilities to process critical minerals and develop higher-value materials. This fits extremely well with Scandium Canada's strategy, especially after the creation of Scalium+, which aims to commercialize aluminum-scandium alloys rather than simply producing scandium oxide.

While this isn't a new contract or a direct source of revenue, it is another indication that Scandium Canada is actively involved in Quebec's advanced materials ecosystem and has access to increasingly sophisticated research and development resources. It also reinforces the company's transition from being viewed solely as a mining company to becoming an integrated advanced materials business.

Overall, this is another positive signal that Scandium Canada is gaining institutional recognition and is positioning itself alongside organizations driving Quebec's critical minerals, electrification, and defense industries.

Really informative video about the scandium market and its future.

To put it into context..This is an interview with Sunrise Energy Metals.

To me, there are only three dedicated scandium projects in the world that are currently truly viable:

SCD (Scandium Canada)
SRL (Sunrise Energy Metals)
SCY (Scandium International)

SRL is currently the most advanced project, but it already has a market capitalization of around $2.7B. That said, you can clearly see the impact of the scandium story on the stock. The share price increased by nearly 7,000% in about a year if you measure from the lows to last month's all-time high.

At the moment, no primary scandium mine is in production. Most of the world's scandium supply comes from a handful of Chinese by-product producers, along with the relatively small by-product production from Rio Tinto Sorel, Canada. We can't even say there's an actual market yet.. so production is really small

Just a quick comparison 😄

SCD:
Hard-rock primary source located in Canada
Mining project plus the Scandium+/Scalium+ alloy division

SRL & SCY
Laterite primary source located in Australia
Mining projects

Market Capitalization
SRL: 2.7B
SCD: 79M
SCY: 60M

If any of these stocks do well, we'll all be happy since we're all betting on the scandium market itself.

Canada Day – Canadian songs/music that resonate with you?

Wishing a happy Canada Day to everyone!

On this occasion, I’m sharing a piece of Quebec traditional music. Being from here, it’s the kind of sound that really resonates deep inside me.

https://youtu.be/Y6-H7cH5KHI?list=RDY6-H7cH5KHI&t=147

Quebec folk music comes mainly from French rural songs brought to New France in the 1600s, especially from regions like Normandy and northern France. Over time, it blended with Norman maritime traditions storytelling, rhythms, and seafaring life and later with Irish and Scottish influences, which added fiddle styles, reels, and a dance energy.

What are the songs that resonate with you and make you proud to be Canadian?

Naskapi Nation Launches Assessment of Potential Access Corridors for Critical Minerals Development

https://preview.redd.it/x51asrkr8k7h1.png?width=736&format=png&auto=webp&s=2c3d13e6edac5ea1fcca35e085054d50822fe6f7

Looks like the Naskapis are taking a proactive approach by studying how their territory could be developed in a way that benefits both their Nation and Canada's economy, while remaining firmly in control of what happens on their land. They're gathering information first, considering environmental and cultural impacts, and exploring governance and ownership models rather than simply saying yes or no to development. That seems like a pragmatic way to ensure any future decisions are made on their own terms.

The only rare earth projects in that area that I know of so far are Torngat Metals (a private, gove
rnment-backed company just north of Scandium Canada that isn't producing yet) and, of course, SCD.

Don't Wait for Scandium Demand. Create It Instead

I've been thinking about a way to help kickstart the scandium market.

The biggest challenge for scandium has always been a supply-and-demand stalemate. Manufacturers don't want to redesign products around scandium alloys until supply is reliable, while producers struggle to justify large-scale production until demand exists.

Instead of treating scandium as a niche material reserved for aerospace and defense, why not integrate it directly into Quebec-produced aluminum from the start?

Quebec already produces some of the greenest aluminum in the world thanks to its hydroelectric power. Rather than selling scandium as a standalone specialty metal, small amounts could be added to selected aluminum ingots to create a premium Quebec aluminum standard. The goal wouldn't necessarily be to sell it at a much higher price, but rather to make standard aluminum seem more basic while positioning Quebec aluminum as the benchmark for both performance and low carbon footprint.

The creation of a new higher-quality aluminum ingot, branded as something like "Enhanced Green Aluminum," could help companies around the world differentiate their products and support their own decarbonization and sustainability goals. Instead of simply buying aluminum, manufacturers would be buying into a premium material with a stronger environmental and performance story.

Scandium Canada's projected production wouldn't be enough to enrich all of Quebec's roughly 3 million tonnes of annual aluminum output. However, more than 90 tonnes of scandium oxide per year could still support a substantial volume of scandium-enhanced aluminum aimed at higher-value markets such as EVs, rail, drones, defense, marine applications, advanced manufacturing, and specialized extrusions.

What makes this interesting is that the value isn't just in selling scandium. The real opportunity is moving Quebec aluminum further up the value chain. Instead of competing primarily on commodity aluminum prices, Quebec could offer a differentiated product with higher strength, better weldability, improved corrosion resistance, and a significantly lower carbon footprint than most competing aluminum products worldwide.

Once manufacturers adopt scandium-enhanced aluminum in their products, switching away becomes difficult because it often requires redesigning components, recertifying processes, and requalifying suppliers. This creates long-term demand and helps build a durable premium materials ecosystem around scandium.

To me, this seems like a far better strategy than simply waiting for a scandium market to emerge on its own. By integrating scandium directly into Quebec's aluminum industry, you create demand from within the supply chain itself while strengthening Quebec's position as a global leader in premium low-carbon aluminum. It could be one of the few approaches that simultaneously grows both the scandium market and the premium aluminum market.
