8 months into wiingy piano lessons - what I wish I'd known before starting

Work from home in marketing, started piano 8 months ago with zero experience.

I've seen people ask about online lessons and wiingy specifically so figured I'd share what the actual experience has been like.

Things that worked out:

- I can take lessons in sweatpants from my living room which honestly is the only reason I've been consistent

- Teacher can see my hands/posture on camera and corrects mistakes immediately

- Can record lessons and rewatch when I forget what we covered

- Way cheaper than in-person teachers in Denver

Things that took adjustment:

- First few lessons felt awkward talking to a screen

- Had to figure out camera angle so teacher could see both my hands and the keys

- Sometimes I forget they can't just reach over and show me hand position

Things I didn't expect:

- I practice more because I know someone's going to see if I didn't

- Progress feels faster than when I tried teaching myself

- My teacher sends me practice recordings between lessons which helps a lot

Honest cons:

- Internet cutting out mid-lesson is annoying

- Took 2 tries to find a teacher whose style worked for me

- Some things would probably be easier to learn in person

Overall:

It's been good. I'm not concert-level but I can play actual songs now and don't feel lost anymore.

If you're on the fence about online lessons - they work. Not perfect, but they work.

Happy to answer questions about the actual experience.
