Using IDM + Playnite to make my own "reinstall" system for pirated games

So I found out that IDM can export selected download links into an .ef2 file. If you import that file back into IDM later, it restores those download entries, which makes reinstalling a game (illegally or from links*)* quite convenience without going through all the extra steps n such. This is especially handy for games downloaded from places like SteamRIP (I aint waiting for 10 secs cooldown and get tricked into opening 5 layered ads another time) or other sites that provide third-party download links instead of torrents. (I don't torrent that much, so I can't really comment on whether this is useful for that or not)

I've also been using Playnite as my main game launcher for a while and really enjoy having everything in one library and since I usually forgot making a folder in download n get it drifted a way in 2 days I might as well figure out a way to organize it.

I made an addon called CustomFolder that's now available in the Playnite Add-ons database. It doesn't technically do anything sailing-related. It just gives you quick create + quick access to a custom folder for every game directly from Playnite.

So for my setup, I just keep the game's .ef2 file inside its folder (I use my addon to create one but any folder can do, even without a folder n keep it in your download sea if you prefer) and navigate to it whenever you want to reinstall it, import IDM export file n done.

Obviously it's not literally the same as clicking "Install" on Steam, but it makes my library feel a lot closer to an actual launcher where I can keep an uninstalled game in my library and still have an easy way to reinstall it later.

CustomFolder itself isn't specifically made for this either. You can store whatever you want in the per-game folders — screenshots, edited highlights, guides, mod links, notes, backups, etc. The .ef2 thing just something it was originally made for, I then implement preset and a few more stuff so it has more functionality to serve idk whatever your purpose is.

(It just create quick access folder and you can named it from inside Playnite, not any big crazy thing)

I made a Playnite addon to keep all your game-related files organized

I might have a better wording for the title, but whatever.

I'm not sure if this should have the Addon Release tag or not since I only have it on GitHub so far.

Recently I wanted to make a few game-related folders to store random stuff like edited highlights, guides, mod links, notes, etc. Basically anything related to a specific game that I want to keep somewhere

I got tired of constantly creating folders just to temporarily store something, only to completely lose track of it 2 days later (yes I understand almost not everyone store their file in download folder and forgot to bring it somewhere else before get it drifted away)

So I decided to make a Playnite addon for it. Since all my games are already organized in Playnite anyway, I figured I might as well use that to save myself a bunch of clicks creating and organizing folders manually

The addon is called CustomFolder

Basically, you can right-click any game in Playnite and instantly create/open a dedicated folder for that game. now support preset tag

By default, it uses Playnite's built-in {PlayniteDir} variable, so the folders can stay relative to your Playnite installation and work with both normal and portable installations

The default format is:

{PlayniteDir}\CustomFolder\ + Game Name

So for example:

%localappdata%\Playnite\CustomFolder\The First Berserker Khazan

or with a portable installation:

D:\Playnite\CustomFolder\The First Berserker Khazan

The base directory is configurable too, so you don't actually have to store everything inside the Playnite folder if you don't want to

The addon can both create AND navigate. The first time you use it on a game, it'll create the folder and open it. After that, using it again simply opens the existing folder

It doesn't move, modify, or delete anything inside those folders. It just creates the directory when needed and gives you a quick way to get back to it directly from Playnite

I originally made this entirely for personal use, but I figured it might be useful to someone else too, or at least give someone an idea for something better

It's still pretty simple right now, but I might expand it later. One thing I'm thinking about is allowing multiple folders/presets per game, so you could have separate locations for things like Highlights, Guides, Mods, etc. and create/open them directly from Playnite. (If anyone actually uses this lol)

Update v1.1

Added presets*, so you can set up different directory structures depending on what you're storing*

I also changed the default base directory to:

{PlayniteDir}\CustomFolder

so CustomFolder won't accidentally merge game folders with existing folders inside your Playnite installation unless you specifically configure it that way

I'm also working on getting the addon into the Playnite Add-ons database so it can eventually be installed directly through Playnite instead of manually downloading it from GitHub

#UPDATE: now available on Playnite database
