Why Does the Secret Child Trope Always Involve Hiding the Pregnancy for Stupid Reasons?

Why is the secret-child trope so often handled by the FMC (especially Hermione) hiding the pregnancy for reasons that, to me, really don’t hold up?

I’ve seen this in so many different Hermione pairings, as well as in traditionally published books. It’s almost always the same setup: the FMC gets her feelings hurt by an OW, or she assumes the MMC doesn’t want her because their relationship was casual or a one-night stand, or decides he wouldn’t want the baby anyway. Then she concludes that she has the right to keep the pregnancy/child a secret because “it’s her body and her choice.”

And I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand this. Obviously, women have the right to make decisions about their own bodies and pregnancies. But once a child exists, I don’t think “it’s my body” automatically justifies deliberately keeping the child’s father from knowing they have a child, unless there’s a serious reason, like abuse or the father being genuinely unsafe.

If the only reason is that she’s hurt, angry, embarrassed, assumes he doesn’t want her, or decides for him that he wouldn’t want the baby, I immediately lose sympathy for the FMC. To me, that feels less like protecting herself and more like making a selfish decision on behalf of everyone involved, especially the child.

I genuinely don’t understand why this is such a common and popular plot in pregnancy/secret-child stories. Am I the only one who struggles with the whole “it’s her choice, her body, and she knows best” justification when the motivation is clearly coming from a place of hurt or resentment?

I’m asking because I’m currently annoyed after reading this AGAIN in a FF. I actually love both the pregnancy trope and the secret-child trope, but this particular version drives me absolutely insane.

ISO Hermione dies and he loses his mind and brings her back to life

I'm looking for FFs where Hermione actually dies, and Tom saves her. That could be one of these situations:

1. Hermione dies, and Tom uses a time turner to get her back (Similar to "I will make you proud" but the other way around).

2. Hermione dies for a few minutes/hours during a battle, or whatever other situation, and He loses his mind during the time she is dead; I want him to be destroyed, crying, holding her, etc. She is then revived through medical assistance/magic.

3. Hermione and Tom fall in love, and she dies, and he uses whatever means he can to bring her back or uses a time turner to get her back.

4. Hermione is depressed going through whatever, and she tries to kill herself, and He loses his mind and feels responsible for it (maybe he was mean, etc).

Basically, I want Hermione to die for real for a while, and I want to see him losing his mind over it; or falling in love with her while trying to save her.

Any FF in those categories would be appreciated. Please let me know a bit about your recommendation and which situation it would fit. Thank you!

ISO Soft - Emotional vulnerable - Balanced Hermione

Looking for any FF (Dramione OR NOT) where Hermione is represented as more canon, meaning in the books she is smart, intellect competent, but she is also insecure sometimes, wants to be loved, wants to have a family (especially because what happened with her family), wants to be cherrished and find people who accept her how she is. NOT DOORMAT.

Only request: NOT SINGLE PARENTS (no single dad draco or single mom hermione).

LF: Hermione pursues Draco first, bold, cheeky, and completely unapologetic

Me again! 🫣🫣

I'm looking for Dramione fics where Hermione is the one actively pursuing Draco. Not in a purely lust-driven way or because she just wants to sleep with him, but because she genuinely has a crush on him and decides she's going to see where it goes.

I'd love a Hermione who's bold, cheeky, and very straightforward about her interest. Bonus points if she doesn't care that Harry, Ron, or anyone else disapproves of her choices when it comes to Draco. She's confident enough to make her own decisions.

I'd especially enjoy a dynamic where Draco is the hesitant one, whether he's suspicious of her motives, h doesn't like her (yet), thinks he's not good enough for her, is just reluctant to let himself fall, or for any other reason.

Good banter is always a huge plus!

Any recs that fit this vibe?

LF: Hermione Gets Pregnant While the Marriage Law Is Still Active (Draco baby)

Looking for Dramione marriage law fics where Hermione actually gets pregnant while the marriage law is still in effect.

A lot of the marriage law stories I've read follow the same pattern: Hermione fights the law, eventually gets it overturned, and either never gets pregnant or pregnancy only happens in the epilogue after the law is gone. I'm hoping to find something different.

What I'm looking for:

  • Marriage law/repopulation law forces Draco and Hermione together.
  • Hermione becomes pregnant during the enforcement of the law, not after it's repealed.
  • Extra bonus if the marriage law is never dismantled (I know that's probably a unicorn, but I'd love to read it).

I know most marriage law Hermione doesn't stop until she brings the law down, it's starting to be repetitive for the FFs I have tried with this concept, so extra bonus points if the law never gets dismantled. But not a necessity as long as she is pregnant while the law is still active.

Any recommendations?

Looking for Soulmates (Dramione or other pairings) - A world where soulmates are common and almost everyone has one.

I've recently read a Fred&Hermione FF, which is pretty canon except with a few twists. In this world, every or almost every wizard/witch has a soulmate. Fred & Hermione meet young. I'm looking for a similar vibe, since although this FF had good writing and a good concept, the focus was on the plot, with little development of the romances, and it was YA (I like mature content, it's a preference thing). It left me hungry, wanting the same but with romance as the center/no YA. (Adding the name that FF if anyone is interested to read it and as inspiration for what I'm looking for: Soul Tethered by tricksterghost7).

Therefore, looking for any soulmates FF, that being Dramione, or any other pairing (except with Ron bc it's Ron). Specifically, in that world, soulmates are a thing that everyone expects. Subjective good writing is a must, please.

Draco & Hermione married/together -> Draco loses his memory -> they actually break up/divorce -> Draco gets his memory back months/years later

I know this might not exist, but I'm trying anyway. This is a very specific request:

Draco and Hermione have been married or together long-term, and Hermione is pregnant with their first child. Draco's family is not supportive. Draco loses his memories for whatever reason, and he just remembers not liking Hermione back in the day. He struggles with his new reality; they both do. Hermione wants to make it work, but Draco is not sure he wants to continue his life together with her since he doesn't love her, and his memories might never come back.

He decides that it is best to walk away from Hermione and their baby, and his mindset is still aligned with his parents' beliefs. He gives up the baby rights, and they divorce/break up.

Hermione is devastated, but she needs to move on. She has the baby, and she starts to heal and raise the kid alone, in a quiet life. Away from the Malfoys.

Months or years later, Draco regains his memories (HE HAS NOT BEEN WITH ANYONE ELSE IN BETWEEN - No Astoria or Pansy), but he thinks Hermione and he are still married, and she is expecting their first child. He doesn't remember the time in between when he didn't remember. Once he learned what happened, his heart broke. He missed the birth of his child, seeing him/her grow up, and divorced the love of his life, etc.

Hermione is sympathetic but doesn't want to involve herself of their child's mess again, and keeps her distance. Eventually, they do work it out in a slow burn, heartbreaking moments for both. HEA.

If you know of any work that is VERY similar to this, LET ME KNOW!!

Key point: he loses his memories, and then he gets them back, but they aren't together anymore.

New recommendations: Draco & Hermione pregnancy during the war or dystopian (stressful situations)

Hi 👋 I know there are other post for pregnancy but looking for NEW or less known fanfics with pregnancy between Draco and Hermione.

Asking for:
- NO single parents (no previous children with other partners)
- Draco is the father!!!
- it can be the plot or a sub plot.
- slow burn preferably but flexible on that point.

I’m open for secret child as long as Draco doesn’t have more children with anyone else, same with Hermione. Basically any children in the fanfic from Draco or Hermione should be with each other.

A plus would be a likeable Hermione, not very sassy or stubborn beyond the normal for her character.
