Anyone else’s Finecea have a weird grain / sharp sand texture?!

Finally managed to find a tube and it has an awful grit throughout the whole thing. I’ll email them to ask what’s up but I’m wondering if anyone else has had this issue / theirs was like this? 😭

Holme beauty “the one” eyeshadow palette swatches + show toppers

Ooops I did that thing where I was saving something for a “proper” use and barley used it 😅 so cracked into the Holme beauty eyeshadow palette properly today and swatched it up :)

I wasn’t sure if the shimmer in the palette were the same as the show toppers. They’re not! They’re different formulas. The eyeshadow shimmers swatch almost metallic but not foiled when swiped and feel soft, not creamy. They’re higher impact and have a pigmented base.

The show toppers have no pigment base and are a soft sparkle type formula that can be built up (in the swatches I’ve built them up a few times). The formula can be a tinyyy bit crumbly and isn’t designed to build up super pigmented, so when you push it, they have their limits. Def a sparkle ✨ type vibe and very lovely when you get their use.

For the eyeshadows I’ve only used the mattes on my eyes before and they’re lovely, they also swatch well. I’ll update properly after a few looks / try-ons.

This line drop included brushes (great as always) and eyeshadow primers (haven’t tried just yet!).

I know people mentioned price, it seems the palette dropped in cost? And the price per g is similar to most luxe eyeshadows, and this is a Aussie brand on a smaller scale than Natasha Denona or Mario + the single shadows are removable and replaceable which is good if you go for one shade over and over.

Lots of the conversation with luxury is “is X worth it”, but when it comes to luxe brands I do feel it’s another question and becomes way more personal to how you use / like to use products. Does packaging matter to you? Do you like to mix and match products, or do you like a tried and true situation? Do you buy based on brand and ethos etc etc. That’s my POV, that this sort of item is for a particular makeup wearer/ buyer that values a specific experience with beauty

PS: I’m also updating my brand review article of the entire brand (took a bunch of photos today) so if you have any specific Q’s about any products please do ask, I’d love to include them! I’ve tried almost everything in the range.

Also! These were sent in PR a while back as I work in beauty. I’ve spend my own $$$ on Holme on a few orders for top ups and also gifts for friends / loved ones (esp 50+ family members who love the primer!).

Thanks for reading :)

What customisable form / newsletter signup pop up do you use?

I’m looking for a simple newsletter popup for my site and somehow this has been way harder than expected.

What I need:

  • Ability to stop showing the popup after someone subscribes (obviously)
  • Delay settings (eg. show after X seconds or scroll depth)
  • Full popup control (not just embeds)
  • Customisable colours at minimum, ideally custom fonts too (not essential)
  • Doesn’t force double opt-in (or at least gives me the option)

I don’t need anything fancy like quizzes. Happy to pay, but trying to avoid something insanely expensive. Everything I've seen that does the above seems $250+ yearly.

What are you all using that you actually like?

If you have any surveys for your brand or business you'd like me to fill out, please don't hesitate to link it in the comments. I'd love to give thoughtful answers.

PS: This is for everyone regardless of their skincare level or knowledge. (In fact, we really welcome beginners because that's who we think will probably benefit most from).

Thank you! PS: Feel welcome to drop any podcast suggestions

PSA: The report “Influencing Sunscreen Use: Influencers and Promotion of Sunscreen in Australia” by BeautySciComm is live

Hey, remember this survey post

The report "Influencing Sunscreen Use: Influencers and Promotion of Sunscreen in Australia" is now available to read!

Summary

This report examines the role of influencers in promoting sunscreen use in Australia, in the context of rampant pro-tanning and anti-sunscreen misinformation on social media.

It presents the findings and recommendations that followed a survey of 2008 social media users interested in skincare, including 1076 Australians (many from r/AusSkincare). Insights were also collected from 6 Australian skincare influencers on the impacts of the July 2022 Therapeutic Goods Advertising Code (TGAC) change surrounding influencer testimonials.

It examines the role of influencers in promoting sunscreen use in Australia, in the context of rampant pro-tanning and anti-sunscreen misinformation on social media.

Key Findings

1. Aesthetic properties of sunscreens are a major barrier to frequent use.

  • Overwhelmingly, the main barriers for Australians were being unable to find a product with a comfortable texture (31.4%), acceptable appearance (18.6%), and lack of eye sting (16.2%).
  • 36.3% of frequent sunscreen users also reported these as their final barriers to regular use.

2. Social media influencers were a major source of information on aesthetic properties that led to sunscreen use (58-68%).

  • Many respondents said influencers helped them find suitable sunscreens that enabled regular use, and were concerned that this information was reduced by the TGAC changes. Influencers were still frequently asked for testimonials on aesthetic properties.
  • Australians may be indirectly encouraged to use less reliable products (cosmetic SPF products, sunscreens shipped from overseas) due to scarce information on TGA-listed sunscreens.

3. Influencers were the most common source of information that triggered frequent sunscreen use (58.3%).

  • As well as finding aesthetically acceptable products, influencers were also important for raising awareness of sunscreen’s benefits for skin appearance (56.9%), skin cancer and sunburn prevention (53.3%), and the need for use outside of high UV exposure (summer, beach) (45.2%).

4. There were markedly fewer pro-sunscreen posts from influencers after the TGAC update, including general non-testimonial content, with 2 influencers reporting an 80% decrease.

  • This could lead to reduced sun-safe behaviours, as our survey indicates that influencer content depicting sunscreen use and product testimonials are important drivers of sunscreen uptake.
  • Newer research also suggests pro-sunscreen posts can reduce negative beliefs formed from anti-sunscreen misinformation (“bypassing”), without requiring as much time and expertise as direct corrections.

This was a huge labour of love, thank you to u/akiraahhh for the countless hours put into this.
