Why “Daemons” Gets Lost in Translation…

Hey all! I’ve really been enjoying this series, but the translation of “daemons” kept throwing me off, so I made a video about it.

In Japanese, the title uses the word tsugai, which basically means “pair.” The pair idea shows up all over the story, while “daemons” loses some of the pair heavy atmosphere that I think the author, Arakawa, was trying to build.

Asa and Yuru themselves are tsugai as twins, and there are constant themes of linked pairs. (Another more subtle example: tsugai can also mean HINGE which is seen with all the teeth and fish mouth imagery, parts that connect via hinge. )

If you’re interested in more of the Japanese meaning and symbolism behind the series, feel free to check out the video!

Do you like the translation? If not, what do you think would be better?

Hey all! I love Fullmetal Alchemist, so I visited Hiromu Arakawa’s hometown and reflected on how her upbringing influenced the series.

It’s a mix of travel footage, her background and how farm life shaped her work. This is somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit, so I wanted to share it with other fans!

I learned a lot about Arakawa and a lot of things surprised me too.
Curious if anything about Arakawa surprised or interested you? (Doesn’t have to be related to the video!) Cheers.
