Probably the darkest page in the entire arc

Probably the darkest page in the entire arc

I've been absolutely blown away for years by Togashi's ability of conveying emotions through facial expression no matter how good/bad the art style is. Even mere scratches and chaos can give off the vibe that Togashi wants to transfer to the reader. This page, took all of that to a whole new level. Not only did he drew an extremely detailed piece of meat with a slit in the middle, but the way he drew Borksen's resigned face is just incredible. At first she held onto hope that Morena can be "fixed", but the more Morena went on in her explanation the more defeated Borksen looked. She basically knew there was no way in trying to change Morena's mind. Not to mention that smile.... that smile on Morena's face while talking. It's like a calm smile that is hiding unbelievable amounts of hatred and pain and thoughts of revenge. Probably my fav Succession War panel next to Halkenburg's awakening.

Did Togashi reveal Woble's curse identity?

In 401, Longhi mentioned that Beyond had a child around the same time a prince was born. Now with the release of 412 and judging by the previous panel of the aura being released from "Woble's" aka boy Woble cradle, could that be the curse activating somehow? Meaning that the fake Woble is actually Beyond's son, who is carrying the curse directed at Woble?

Think about it, Male Woble and Female Woble are around the same age, the aura coming out of a literal baby means that the baby was definitely awakened through some sort of a nen attack which is identical to Longhi's theory. Togashi could be hitting two birds with one stone here as protecting/exorcizing male Woble = protecting female Woble so even if the real Woble isn't on the ship ( which is the logical scenario since, according to Oito, she isn't illegible to compete in the contest ) despite having her blood in the seed urn. Meaning she could've violated the other condition of joining which was stated in 349 that this contest will be among "children of the legal wives of Nasubi" who "board the Black Whale and participate in the departure ceremony". What I meant by two birds with one stone is that Togashi can keep the plot contained in the ship even if Woble wasn't on it and instead of dividing the story between the mainland where the real Woble is and the ship, exorcizing male Woble would do the trick.

411: Risk, Resolve, Lacking Both and the Succession War

We learn in the latest chapter that the succession war involves 4 connected stages:

1- praying for prosperity.

2- sacrificing the princes.

3- converging all of the energy resulting from the princes deaths.

4- using that enormous power to administer the affairs of the state and support and maintain the GSB of the next king.

We also get another look basically just refreshing how limitations work and that they should be applied with a choice left instead of enforcing them.

Considering this, Nasubi and his children are actively strengthening the nen resulting from this war ( Nasubi by sacrificing his kids and the princes by sacrificing each other ) but here is where it gets kinda complicated.

Woble is literally an infant, which means she lacks both resolve and understanding of risk and return. Maybe that's why Kurapika said that she doesn't have the right for succession.

The same thing applies to Marayam, he is also a kid and doesn't understand all of this, doesn't that also make him out of the question?

Halkenburg was also like this before, he didn't have the resolve to participate in this war but he eventually steeled himself and went on a rampage.

I think the whole situation of having resolve and will of putting in the work and sacrificing your siblings is a crucial part of making this nen stronger and having two kids who lack both is something that might void the entire ritual. Not to mention that some princes like Tuppepa and Tyson also hate this whole conflict.

Time for a re-read

It's time to re-read this masterpiece of an arc for the 1526162th time to keep up with this thickening plot. We survived another hiatus and in a couple of days we will witness the return of the GOAT 🔥

Emperor Time miscalculation?

I'm not sure if I'm missing something or if this is a miscalculation regarding the time ET was activated during day 1.

The black whale departed at 12, Kurapika activated ET on day 1 at 2 pm to analyze Syrid's ability using Stealth Dolphin. Which will remain active until the ability is used. When Kurapika passed out and woke up the next day, Bill told him he is been out for 9 hours. Which means Kurapika woke up at 6am day 2 ( it was stated that this point of the story is 18 hrs since the black whale departed ) which means that ET remained active from 2pm on day 1 all the way until Kurapika woke up at 6am day 2 then was deactivated shortly after. Which means that Kurapika has been under ET for 16 hrs ( 12 from the point when he gave the ability to Oito, 16 is the total time since stealing the ability from Syrid ).

Another thing is, in chapter 366, the first page mentions that the events that follow are "4 hrs after departure" yet this can't be possible since it will completely contradict the fact that Kurapika woke up on day 2 at 6am and will contradict what Bill said about him passing out for 9 hrs. Another example is Kurapika saying at one point that his ET has been active for 3 hrs yet the correct calculation should be 7 hours.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something or is there some kind of contradiction in day 1 timestamps? I'm trying to structure a cohesive timeline while reading yet day 1 completely missed my brains lol. This is probably my 16th time reading the arc but I wanted this time to be different, I wanted to structure a timeline with timestamps.

Is Kurapika cooking something..

The fact that Kurapika is so sure about this makes me think that he had already formed some kind of a 100% guaranteed plan. Among the five chains ( healing, dowsing, stealing, jail and judgement ) I don't think there is any chain that could be used so discreetly and during a handshake... Maaaaybe the steal chain? Because healing and dowsing are useless in this situation, jail is specifically designed for the spiders, judgement chain requires ET and will cause some commotion so it's either the steal chain or Kurapika is hiding something else, maybe a whole new aspect to his ability.

The 3rd & 4th bylaws

How does Pariston's request of changing the bylaws fall under the association becoming an interesting place? Teradein and his squad pushed for a more "peaceful" association but that would've made it boring for Pariston who is following in the same steps as Netero. It made sense why would he push for that during the elections to absorb Teradein's votes to himself but why insist on changing these rules even after resignation?

To make it easier for him to push for his 5000 Chimera hybrids to take the exam later on? But that doesn't sit well with Pariston's character of loving a challenge.

I love this panel

I love how Ging's entire goofy demeanour changed and became serious the moment Gon mentioned that he should've been the one to die instead of Kite.

u/Mo-HD93 — 19 days ago

Ging's praise

When one of the nen GOATs praises you like that, you know you're something. Put some respect on Leorio's name 😭

Edit: I know that "potential" here might've been referring to his potential to win the elections but I still found it interesting to be praised by someone of Ging's caliber.

Pariston as the final threat

Don't get me wrong, I'm all in for the idea of Gyro as a final threat and I actually see him as a very interesting character despite seeing nothing from him other than a flashback of his childhood but the way his soldiers respected him gives you an idea of how charismatic he must've been to the point that Welfin blatantly stated in front of Post Rose Meruem, the strongest being ever introduced to the story at that point, that the ants are his enemies and that Gyro is the only one who he will consider as a leader.

But the thing is, I honestly find the idea of Pariston being the final threat or the final "villain" a lot more intriguing. Pariston is a character that makes you feel threatened without even lifting a finger. His schemes and the way he uses logic in twisted ways just to create scenarios to annoy others not to mention that he has over 5000 human-ant hybrids with nen abilities to turn the world into complete chaos cause remember, these hybrids may not follow any orders. They may have a stronger ant side to them which will end up creating a disaster probably worse than the NGL one.

Another thing is that I think Togashi had already given us the idea of someone who is going against the world in Morena. So unless there were some kind of ties between Morena and Gyro, I don't really see Togashi introducing two villains with the same exact goal. Why do I think that Morena and Gyro might be connected? Because I think that Meteor City and Kakin might've had some kind of connection. Meteor City elders developed nen abilities around the same time they started working with the mafia. They supplied personnel to the mafia ( since Meteor City residents don't have any birth certificates or any identification they will be useful in mafia operations ) so there might be some connection there. Oc it could be a completely different mafia branch than the one operating in Kakin but what made me think that there might be some connection is the fact that Chrollo knew too much about the succession, he even know about the 3 sacred treasures controlling the war.

This is pure speculation and I could be wrong but honestly unless there was some kind of work relationship between Morena and Gyro, I would rather have Pariston as the final threat in HxH.

They knew all along

I honestly think what makes this scene more heartbreaking is that all of the extermination team ( probably besides Killua ), knew that Kite was already dead and they just didn't want to shatter Gon completely. It is still cruel cause that revelation pushed Gon to the edge and I could be totally wrong but I find it hard to believe that experienced hunters such as Morel, Knov, Knuckle and Shoot didn't realize that Kite was dead that whole time.

What was the point of Illumi's sacrifice?

In the scene where Illumi catches up to Killua and Alluka in the forest he mentions that he doesn't mind dying if it will protect the family. If you think about it, the Zoldycs would've still been in danger ( yes I know that healing doesn't require any malicious requests, I'm just speaking from Illumi's pov and logic ). Illumi was gambling with rule no. 5 that states that no one can wish twice in a row. Killua's first wish was to leave the family estate in 30 minutes ( unbeknownst to the Zoldycs, Killua can order Nanika without getting demands ) so Illumi wanted to test if rule no. 5 applies to Killua or not by teasing him that if he can sacrifice his butlers to kill him then it would be easy to sacrifice random people to heal Gon.

The thing is, assuming Killua did really wish for Illumi to die, the ones who would've bore the consequences would be Tsubone and Amane. Then Killua ( according to Illumi ) would get someone to wish for Gon to be healed then Killua would bear the consequences which will be catastrophic, killing tens of thousands of people including the Zoldycs. So how does Illumi consider him dying here a way to save the family if the next step would've put them in danger any way?

Oc I know how the wishes work and how healing doesn't require any malicious requests, I'm just wondering about the logic of Illumi's "sacrifice" here.

Wasn't Tsubobe making a huge gamble here?

After granting Nanika her 3 demands ( giving her 3 fingernails ), Tsubone told Killua to make his wish while she and Amane will pay the price for "ruining" his plans. Now this can be interpreted in two ways:

1- either Tsubone meant that she will bear the punishment for conspiring to kill Illumi. Which doesn't make much sense since she specified Amane as well and this leads to the second more logical interpretation.

2- Tsubone meant that she will bear the consequences of Killua's wish aka bear the demands of Nanika after killing Illumi but isn't this a huge gamble that went against everything that Illumi was trying to prevent in the first place?

Let's say Killua went through with it and killed Illumi, since Killua just made a wish ( he can't make another one in a row and Illumi is dead the only two names known to Nanika to make the new requests will be either Tsubone or Amane. Assuming she requested anything from Amane and Amane failed to do what Nanika asked, Amane will die, the closest person to her/spent more time with ( presumably Tsubone ) will also die but it's not limited to only two, it would possibly extend to the Zoldyc Family itself so wasn't that kind of a gamble on her part? It would've also made Illumi's sacrifice kinda pointless.

APR damage negation

When Gon and Pitou were headed to Peijing to "help" Kite, Knuckle suggested to use APR on Pitou to keep track of his location at all times and to shield Gon from Pitou's attacks. Now we know that Knuckle's ability does negate damage, not only to him but to whoever APR is attached to. So in this case, it should protect him and Pitou, not Gon so how was Knuckle speaking about shielding Gon?

If Hakoware can shield whoever is fighting the person that the APR is attached to, why didn't it shield Shoot who nearly died while facing Youpi despite APR being attached to Youpi at that time?

Specialist chart

When Kurapika's eyes become scarlet, he becomes a Specialist allowing him to use his Specialist ability Emperor Time: Absolute Mastery. The question here, why is Kurapika still tied to his Conjuration chart in that case? Like I completely understand that ET only increases the output/efficiency but doesn't change levels/mastery stated in the nen chart but shouldn't it be a Specialist chart here?

If Specialist chart is bound by the same rules then Kurapika ( as a Specialist ) would have the following percentage 80% for Conjuration & Manipulation, 60% for Transmutation & Emission and 40% for Enhancement as max mastery levels while this page is still considering these limits for a Conjurer.

Pitou, Ikalgo, aura & dead bodies

This is going to be long so bare with me and correct me if I'm wrong. To start this, I believe that once a nen user dies, their aura dissipates/disappear since aura is literally the life energy of living things in general ( aside from the cases of Post Mortem Nen when the dead user's nen persists after death ). The question is, is each body "compatible" with only the person's aura or can any aura power any body? I'll bring two examples for this, Pitou and Ikalgo.

Ikalgo was able to possess dead bodies and use the nen abilities of the dead user. This shouldn't be possible but this is the first case that proves that maybe Ikalgo was using his own aura to "power up" the corpse he is possessing allowing him to use the abilities. Kinda like when you use a battery to power stuff up.

Pitou on the other hand, is probably doing the same thing but using his aura to persevere the organs of the dead bodies he is controlling. Because unlike Ikalgo who focuses his aura on powering up the corpse and using the abilities, Pitou focuses the aura in preserving the body parts hence why corpses controlled by Ikalgo will start to decompose over time unlike corpses controlled by Pitou.

So, in chapter 222 when Gon and Killua met Shoot, Knuckle, Morel and Knov to see Kite, Knuckle said he had to seal Kite's aura with his IPR. So in this case, was he actually talking about Pitou's aura that was used to preserve Kite's organs? Did he mistake it for Kite's own aura thus thinking that Kite is actually alive and was just being manipulated? Because it's clear that Knuckle could identify that the aura controlling Kite wasn't his but maybe he couldn't identify the one inside his body and thought that was Kite's own? Or is this whole assumption wrong and bodies do retain some aura after death?

It's also reasonable to believe that they legit thought Kite was still alive since they didn't know how exactly Pitou's ability works and the fact that the Puppeteer doesn't show up unless you touch Kite first. So I don't think they were trying to fool Gon there but what confuses me the most is the whole aura within a dead body situation.

Hatsu vs Ability

I know that this has been a topic of heavy discussions in the past and probably still is, I'll just state my opinion on this whole debate and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The first definition of Hatsu we ever see in the manga is that it's one's personal expression of Nen and that it depends on one's own Nen affinity.

So for example, an Enhancer express his Nen by the act of strengthening, a Transmuter's way of expressing his Nen is changing the aura quality, a Conjurer creates stuff using aura.

After mastering Hatsu, through training in water divination like Wing stated before, one can become ready to create his own unique Nen ability.

A Nen ability can be considered as one's Hatsu ( how they express their Nen ) + Conditions and it's affected further by training and one's own personality.

So, at least according to how I see it, a Hatsu is the broader term while a nen ability is the personalized term and in short, I don't think that using them interchangeably is wrong since they can basically be considered the same thing.

Curious to know what you guys think 🤔

Minor timeline confusion

During the Southernpiece Auction, it was announced that the hunter Jeitsari is willing to give all of his 7 copies of the Greed Island game to be auctioned off in case the game wasn't cleared by Jan 1st of 2000 yet the auction started bidding and selling off the copies ( all 7 copies ended up with Battera, the Phantom Troupe managed to steal the 1st one he won which had Jeitsari's memory card ) and that was still during September of 1999. Am I missing something or did they just completely ignore their contract with Jeitsari and auction all copies earlier?

I know it might be a dumb question but I'm kind of meticulous about timelines lol.

Player limit per Joystation

In Greed Island arc we learn that unlimited number of players can use the same Joystation to play the game but since you need to save and only one save file can be created per memory card then in this case the number will be limited to 8 players per Joystation. Now looking at the Joystation itself, there are 4 base memory card slots so doesn't adding 2 multitaps ( 4 slots each ) make the total number of players 12? Why was it mentioned that the limit is capped at 8?

Transmutation & Conjuration

We know that Transmutation means giving your aura the characteristics of an actual substance. For example Hisoka gives his aura the characteristics of a gum ( stickiness and elasticity ) and Killua gives his aura the characteristics of electricity.

It's also been kind of established that changing your body to resemble something falls into the Conjuration affinity. Examples like Tsubobe, Kurton and Padaille ( the Heil Ly member who could turn his hands into different weapons ) yet there are two examples of two abilities that do that while being classified as Transmutation. Youpi's metamorphosis & Bisky's adult form. Why are these two abilities being classified as Transmutation abilities?

Youpi is kind of understandable and can be explained that since he is half a magical beast he can transform his body since magical beasts can do that, like Kiriko, the beasts Gon, Kurapika and Leorio encountered before the hunter exam. So Youpi's transformation can be classified as a genetic thing rather than nen. Also Bisky's adult form being classified as Transmutation makes little sense.

I know that Hunterpedia isn't an official source of info but some of the classifications kinda make little sense.
