Rust around boiler pressure regulator nut

Hi everyone, this past winter I had some water coming from my TP valve of my boiler. I replaced the pressure regulator which resolved the issue. However, I noticed that there is some significant rust around the nut connecting the pressure regulator to the incoming water line. Should I attempt to unscrew the nut and Teflon tape around the threads before it gets any worse? The previous TACO pressure regulator valve that was in place didn’t have any Teflon tape so I didn’t bother to use any with the new one. Thanks for the help!

How often do you need to backwash your sand filters?

Hi, I’m looking to purchase a new sand filter to minimize my maintenance. Just wondering how often you actually backwash the filter? I understand that you backwash after seeing a rise in pressure (~25% usually) but how often does that happen? My pool is over 20,000 gallons - not sure if that would make a huge difference. Thanks in advance.

Uneven Fiber Spread on DE Filter

Hi everyone, I made the switch from DE to fiber. I noticed that I’m not getting even spread of the fiber on the grids. I make sure to add the recommended amount for the appropriate grid size. I mix the fiber in a 5 gallon bucket with water prior to adding it to the skimmer. Am I doing something wrong? Should I just add more fiber?

Filter pressure rose from 10 to 15 in 4 hours. Is this normal?

Hi everyone, I have a DE grid filter. However, I use plant fiber as my filtering material. After shocking my pool, is it normal for the filter pressure to rise from 10 psi to 15 psi in 4 hours? Have you found that you have to backwash that soon? Thanks!

Plant Fiber instead of DE

Hi everyone, I made the switch from DE to plant fiber last season. I still use the DE grid filter though. As I open the pool, I’m just curious how frequently some of you needed to backwash initially. I’m sure it depends on how dirty the pool is but just wanted to get an idea how frequently I should be checking my filter pressure. Thanks for all the help!

Insect damage to wood in basement back door

Hi all, just as the title says I noticed some damage to the wood in our doorway which goes out from the basement. I used a utility knife to scrape away the damage. There were quite a few small circular holes trough the door frame causing it to be one weak and crumble. I briefly contemplated filling the gap with expanding foam, but I would like to handle this the right way and prevent further damage. I noticed some spiders, millipedes, and small bugs crawling around. I would really appreciate any advice that you can offer. Thank you in advance!

Pool pump humming

Hi everyone, I’ve been struggling to get my pool pump going to start the summer. The pump hums for 5-10 seconds and then turns off - note that the breaker switch does NOT flip.

I inspected the impeller and it does not have any obstructions. I dismantled the pump to replace the impeller seal. The only thing off was that the impeller threads were a little worn but I was able to place it back on the metal threads of the pump without issue.

I replaced the capacitor with another one that has identical specs.

I used my Klein multimeter to check the voltage at the fusebox which was 240V. I then checked the voltage at L1 & L2 while the pump was flipped on and got a reading of 230V.

I’m at a loss as to what to do next. I’d prefer to not replace the motor but I understand if there’s not much left at this point. Any help would be truly appreciated!

Starting dumping chlorine into pool?

Hi everyone, I took the cover off of my pool a few days ago. I thought I had everything ready to go but my pool pump hasn’t been able start up. I believe I need a new capacitor…which won’t arrive for another 2 days (pool pump hums and impeller spins freely but still won’t start up). You can see I have a nice algae bloom gu going; and now some mosquitoes may be reproducing as well. I was planning on following the SLAM process closely but should I start dumping liquid chlorine into the pool and mix it in with a brush? It’s pretty disappointing to visibly see the pool get worse each day. Thanks for the help!

Do I have a digger wasp infestation?

Hi all, I live in New York have a waterfall in my backyard that consists of a bunch of pieces of slate with sand/dirt underneath. I recently noticed small mounds of sand with large holes at the center. I think I may have seen a wasp in the backyard recently but can’t say for sure. My main concern is the structural integrity of the waterfall will be affected. I apologize I don’t have additional photos but I just wanted to see if anyone could help verify if the digger wasp is the likely culprit. If so, what do you recommend for removal? I visited some other Reddit posts that mentioned delta dust (deltamethrin) but I don’t believe I can get it shipped to NY. Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Draining water to the halfway point of the skimmer

Hi everyone, I understand that you’re supposed to drain excess water from the pool to the halfway point of the skimmers. However, upon opening a pool that does that rule still apply - can I just manually vacuum the pool to waste prior to having the pool water go to the filter? Just seems it would be a waste to drain the pool, vacuum to waste, and then refill it. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I recently purchased a home a little over a year ago and we inherited a pool. I have an outlet located on the side of the pool fusebox that I would use for the vacuum. However, the receptacle suddenly died at the end of the season. I purchased and installed a new weather resistant GFCI receptacle. Upon removing the old receptacle, I noticed that it was never grounded. I installed the new outlet and prior to grounding it, I decided to test it - I received a notification on my digital GFCI outlet tester (see image below). I attempted to ground it to the grounding bar and then even directly to the grounding wire leaving the fuse box - I still received the same notification. The black load wire and both line wires test positive for voltage and the neutral did not. The wires leaving the GFCI receptacle go on to the pool light - I attempted to eliminate that but still received the same message from the outlet tester. I’m at a loss. Should I try a new receptacle? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I attached some additional photos.
