On one hand, they help protect consumers, public transport, and businesses from sudden price shocks. On the other hand, subsidies eventually have to be paid for somehow—either through taxes, borrowing, or reduced government spending elsewhere.
Would you rather pay the true market price for fuel and avoid subsidies, or keep subsidies in place to ease the cost of living? Why?
