Sorry if this is dumb question. Somewhat of a new fan but it seems that all the "jam" bands that came after them always play longer encores than the Dead ever did

Why did the dead have soundboard recordings until then end and why does Widespread still have recent soundboard recording on relisten? How does widespread allow crowd soundboards but phish hasn't since 2000?
