Give me recommendations with "focused" improv

Looking for some recommendations on extended improv that stays within general song structures or hits other thematic keys without truly getting "out there"

I'm a high school teacher sitting here listening to 7/31/74 Playin' with a lot of complaints from students who don't "get it" lol.

Thank you!

Best live songs that incorporate a saxophone?

Listening to Eyes of the Wolrd rendition at the Nassau Coloseum 3/29/90 and the saxophone fucking kills it. Makes me wish they had a shit ton more sax. However do you have any recommendations in the discography that have sax?

44 years ago - in May 1982, the Grateful Dead played a great 3 show run at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA - my friends and I were lucky to have tickets but many had to deal with the ugly scalper scene - this guy outside one of those Greek shows had some choice words to say about the scalpers!

This Must Be Heaven

Listening to D&C playing Saint of Circumstance and when I hear Bobby sing this first lyric, I can’t help but smile and tear up a bit.

Will always remember and appreciate the D&C touring era. ❤️

yujuuuuuuu ☮️☮️

I'm thrilled. Let me explain: In Spain (Madrid, to be specific), there's a service called Random Vinyl Club, where for 35 euros a month they send me a random record based on my tastes. And I was lucky enough to receive this gem just this month.

Changing the way I hear Bobby

Hey guys, relatively new/young deadhead here. Despite me listening to them religiously over the last couple years, I don’t think I truly was able to comprehend Bobby’s level of genius. But that easily changed when I recently stumbled across @Mickeytoop on instagram. I implore you all to check this kid out. He is absolutely fantastic and is actively changing the way I hear the Dead. Peace🤞🏼

Jam Bands that resemble more of the 72'-74' sound?

I feel like a lot of jam bands nowadays try and replicate more of the 80s and 90s Dead sound or that modern Phish sound. But I was curious if there were any jam bands that go for more of that jazz-rock feel that the Dead had in 72'-74' like their PITB, Dark Stars, and Other Ones?

We really are a family

On the back of my car is a steal your face sticker so big it almost takes up the entire back window. It is ungodly huge. I was sitting in traffic downtown with my sister not long after Bobby died. This man crossing the street behind my car signal to me and I rolled down my window and he came over. I’d never seen this man before in my life. But he said he saw my sticker and wanted to know how I felt about Bobby‘s death. And we talked about it. Then he went on his way and my sister asked who that was. I said I had no idea. And then she said, “but you talked to him like you’ve known him your entire life.” I just shrugged and said, “He was a Deadhead.”

Weekend at Bobby's

Makes me sad to see this pin now, but at the time, the incident was all the talk.

Rhino Breaks 2015 Pledge to Fans

When Rhino announced the 30 Trips Around the Sun box set, their press release stated that:

"All 30 of the unreleased shows in 30 TRIPS will not be available for individual purchase on CD at any time in the future*."*

I bet the press release from 2015 will soon be taken down but it's still up here:

That language was clearly geared towards people hesitant to buy the $700 set if they knew Rhino would release them individually. Yet just a decade later, they are proudly breaking that pledge by starting to release individual shows from the set starting with the first, 7/3/66:

My weird Gen X flex (?) on this Gen Z trend.

I cant believe this thing is 35 years old and that I somehow still have it. It saw a lot of nasty birkenstocks in nasty parking lots back in the 90s LOL!

West LA Fadeaway cover

Hey gang. I’m looking for a specific cover of west LA fadeaway and for the life of me I can’t remember who did it. It was a Americana cover by a male artist I’ve searched and searched and haven’t been able to find it again but loved it

Jerry Lee Lewis

bear with me. I was listening to Jerry Lee Lewis, Live At The Star Club, today. It's a fantastic live recording from 1964. I'd either overlooked or forgotten on previous listenings that Jerry Lee and the band did a fantastic shift playing What'd I say > Lovelight > What'd I say. So on that slim GD connection I'd like to recommend anyone with a bent for Rock'n'Roll give this one a listen.

use of the term "cash grab"

Here is a subset of the Google definition of Cash Grab: "It typically implies that the creator prioritized making money over quality, ethics, or the actual value provided to the consumer." Providing a product that is of high quality, in demand, and valued by fans does not fit that definition. Rhino's Grateful Dead merchandise is usually pretty good. It's rapidly reviewed by the fan base, to the benefit of others. The product machine has been pumping out archival GD releases for over 30 years. We are not surprised by repackaging. Additionally, the bulk of the performances are also available for free. That is why I don't understand resentment towards remastering, repackaging, or sale of GD recordings. Purchasing is optional. It could be argued that the movie Alien Resurrection was a cash grabs. But GD releases are different. Fans that continue to buy these recordings are a different breed of consumer than the general public. I acknowledge that I'm triggered by the frequent claims of cash grabs in this sub, probably because I can't personally justify the resentment. The music we love is freely available. </rant>
