How would I go about timing my distributor?

Preferably without a timing light because I don't have one

How would I go about replacing the whole distributor?

Is there a way to do it without having to do the timing?

So I recently bought my first 3rd gen and it starts and runs good but after a few minutes it dies and won't turn back on for a while then repeat. I replaced the gas filter and the gas in it was orange so maybe I have to clean the gas tank too?

It's a 3.1
