Just finished FFVI for the first time. I’m gonna dump on it a little, so lovers of the game beware.

What was that ending?? “…and featuring Gau as…Gau!” NO KIDDING. And their idea of a satisfying ending is we get to watch as the characters make their humorous exit from Kefka’s tower? Suuuure. And then Terra pulls a Captain America to save everyone, the end. No, for real, I kept waiting for something else besides them flying around, but then it actually said, “The End.” That’s when I knew for sure: this game had nothing more to offer.

This is the game whose story was supposed to rival VII’s? I really saw a lot of people online saying VI was a serious competitor for the top plot of a FF game. But I just don’t see it. Goofy heroes, slapstick villain, forced character development, and on…

That said, I really enjoyed *some* of the characters’ arcs. The Figaro twins’ story was really captivating, Celes’ theme was really beautiful and…well, I guess maybe that’s all the character development I enjoyed. I know Locke had a whole story with Rachel…I could take it or leave it. I didn’t give a rip about Relm, Strago, Setzer, Shadow…even Terra wasn’t that interesting. Cyan was interesting as a character but overshadowed by the fact that he was CRAP.

All right, well, play VIII or IX again for the first time in 20 years or try a new FF? (Side note just because I’m excited about it: Can’t wait to go to my first GenCon in July, my wife and I are going as Cloud and Tifa.)
