Adding Complexity for Players

Hey y’all! I just ran a session of Mythic (have been running this campaign for about a year), and one of my players voiced that they’re feeling underwhelmed by Mythic’s mechanics.

She loves playing DND, and enjoys adding dice rolls and doing the math, as it were. She really likes the idea of making things challenging and adding dice to rolls.

Have yall added complexity to your games? I want to stick to the spirit of Mythic, but also keep them mechanically engaged. Any input yall might have would be incredible - thanks!!

Printing Maps

Has anyone had success with printing larger sized maps (like 11x17)? I typically download my Canvas maps as a JPG, and have to go to a store like Staples with no printer of my own. Because the file size typically exceeds 25MB, I haven’t been able to print any maps yet.

I really wanna give my players an epic map that they can place their miniatures on when they play. If anyone has had any success with printing larger maps, I’d love to hear about it!

Traps and Hijinks in MB Dungeons

Hey there gang! I’m a DM and have been running a Mythic campaign for the better part of a year and have been LOVING it. During our next session, my players are going to infiltrate a castle that’s under siege by sellswords to rescue the Elephant Knight and Balihanthor.

I want the castle to operate as a site/dungeon and really make it fun, challenging, and deadly for my players. Are there any traps that yall have created before that you’ve enjoyed? And if so, how did they operate in regards to gameplay?

For instance, I want to have a triggered floor tile that, if stepped on, shoots out arrows from a hidden location. I’m trying to think about how I could hint at this via lite narration but not completely give it away (“Oh hey yall! Here’s a tile that is a DIFFERENT color - wink wink nudge nudge”). I’d love to hear any ideas that yall might have, and it’s much appreciated!

New Reader - GoTM Quick Ben and Sorry Query (spoilers)

Hey there gang! I’m a brand new reader to Malazan and loving it so far. Entering the final act of Gardens, and just cackled with glee when I read the demise of Hairlock at the hands and Quick Ben and the shadow Hounds. Seriously, fuck Hairlock.

Anywho! I had a question regarding Ben Adaephon Delat. It was revealed that he was once an important member to Shadowthrone, and somehow escaped his servitude and now has a shadow bounty on his head (good lord is Quick Ben badass). My question is…how in the hell did Sorry / Cotillion NOT know his true identity? She was serving in the Bridgeburners for over two years. It feels like that’s something that the Patron of Assassins would’ve picked up on.

This doesn’t diminish my enjoyment of the book though! Bring on the clash between the Jaghut Tyrant and Anonmander Rake!

I’d appreciate any input yall could provide, and thanks for being what I’ve seen to be a very welcoming community!

Contract Illustrators

Hey yall! I’ve been running a Mythic campaign with my group for over a year, and one of my players is retiring his character during his next session and stepping away from the game.

I wanted to do something special and thank him for playing, as playing TTRPGs is not his usual scene. I wanted to hire an artist to draw his character, The Emerald Knight, and give it to him.

Would anyone happen to know any reputable contract artists by any chance? Wasn’t really sure where to look, and thought coming to this thread would be a good start. Thanks!

The Axe Myth and Navigating Mist

Hey there Mythic gang! I am running a big boss encounter for The Axe myth and could really use some help and ideas for it.

First off, my players are scattered around this large village after a huge battle. Wella Gall unexpectedly appeared at the conclusion of the battle (I did a luck roll), and they’ll have to contend with her during their next session. Before this session, Wella struck the ground with her axe, which released a magical myst and begins to cover the kingdom. My players are all isolated from each other.

I wanted to bring a fun, unique mechanic to them navigating the mist as they try to locate each other and Wella Gall. I don’t want it to just be luck based with a d6 roll. I would love to hear any ideas that you all may have.

Also, when they encounter Wella Gall, I want it to be an epic battle and conclusion to this myth. That being said, if one of my players attempts to grab her axe from her (say with a gambit that passes a save roll), would you all give it to my player, or make it more challenging? I was thinking they must pass three gambits/save rolls before they could wrench the axe away from her.

If anyone has run the Axe myth - how did your encounter with her go?

Hey yall, I had a couple of questions about how you all run jousting and sneaking scenarios. For jousts, I know that both opponents roll dice simultaneously, but my question is - do you only roll one dice (e.g. for your lance)? In combat scenarios, it makes sense that you’re using as much dice as possible, because you’re using everything you have against your opponents (shield, weapon, horse trampling, etc). But since you’re really just using a lance in a joust, do you just use that one dice?

On a different scenario, my players are infiltrating this complex lighthouse. When your characters sneak, do you have them roll VIG or CLA saves to avoid being spotted? And do you have enemies regularly roll CLA saves to see if they spot them? I haven’t run a Metal Gear Solid sneaking scenario yet, so any advice would be much appreciated!

Hey there mythic knights! One of my players asked a pretty great question about armor in combat scenarios. He was fighting another knight who was decked out in full plate armor, but his head was exposed. My player wanted to go for his head with his sword thrust, and made the argument that armor shouldn’t be factored in because he was attacking a part of the body that was unprotected.

Wanted to get everyone’s thoughts on what I should do here as a DM?
