How do each of the splats do small town horror? Who does it the best, and the worst?

One thing I really like about chronicles is that the splats work in a variety of settings- vampires aren’t locked to cities, werewolves aren’t locked to rural areas, etc. They’re not even locked to setting genre, with things like space opera and cyberpunk vampires being officially supported. On that note…. Which of the splats do small town horror? I know it doesn’t really work for some- Promethean’s can’t really get to know the territory before they have to move on, but it works for a lot!

What does the familiar get out of the relationship?

Is it just the prevention of essence bleed? That seems like a pretty poor payoff for being bound to a Mage, especially since the familiar can’t really grow beyond baseline (being capped at rank 2)

Which Arcanum have you found to have the biggest disparity between theory and gameplay?

Its space, for me. I took it thinking it would be useful for getting around and maybe casting some things remotely, and instead its been the easiest way to shore up basically all of the cabal's missing arcana, and a good first resort when encountering something new and unknown.

Do you need to hit 5 in an arcanum to reach archmastery?

First edition made the imperial practices seem like extensions of the arcana, just from levels 6 to 10 instead of 1 to 5. However, that’s pretty dubiously canon in 2e, especially since some of those imperial practices can now be accomplished with normal awakened magic (such as making deviants or prometheans without the practice of entities, or even just granting imbuements with life and prime). 2e states that they’ve achieved knowledge of practices beyond making and unmaking, but the how of it is shrouded in mystery. If one discovered or invented a means of attaining archmastery without yet being a master, could they skip right to it?

Kissing in the Dark: Love in the Chronicles of Darkness

Obviously, vampire deals a lot in romance- you’re a corpse with a throbbing heart, a demigod of sex and violence, an addiction mortals just can’t shake. But what about the other splats? How have you ran trysts between changelings, prometheans discovering how to handle a crush, doomed yuri between a beast and the hero fated to slay her? What kind of themes have you explored through love? Or, if you haven’t run or been in a game with romantic content, how do you imagine a given splat navigates romantic relations?

Good changeling listening?

Been in the mood to start planning out a chronicle after managing to (somewhat thematically) dream about a plot within the setting- but having listening for while I’m working on it, and stuff for my players to listen to, would make it all the easier! Preferably on the darker side!

First time grilling- any tips?

Hi all! I’ve been the primary cook for every household I’ve been in since I was a teenager, but I’ve never actually had the chance to grill before this year. I’ve got something of a menu planned already, and it seems less complicated than most of the stuff I make on a daily basis, but I’d like to make sure I’m well prepared!

What do people not like about hunger dice?

I admit, I’m a VtR player, and mostly encounter other VtR players, so V5 doesn’t come up for me much. But the one thing that does get mentioned is how cool hunger dice are as a mechanic. Having read the edition myself, they seemed like a fun way to handle the Beast. So, imagine my surprise when I find out they’re actually really controversial. What’s up with that?

The Dark Mother's other dalliances?

Its theorized that the Dark Mother and Father Wolf may have created children directly together to form the Geyro, but that surely wasn't the only time either of them reproduced with other powers. Do we know of any other misbegotten children of the mother of monsters?

What’s your mage’s familiar like?

One of the vanishingly few things I’m lamenting about the mage campaign I’m currently in is that I lack any of the subtle arcana that would make a familiar make sense- no spirit for spirits, no death for ghosts, no mind for Goetia. Familiars are always one of my favorite things in mage fiction, monsters that you’ve bonded with forevermore… so what are yours like?

Playable devil-worshippers?

Hi all! Recently actually finally read through the lucifuge, and was disappointed to find out that they worked against devils, rather than with them, and that their cool devil powers aren’t really meant to be used to summon things or for letting them possess you, or for making your body more demonic. Is there a good option for playing as more devil-friendly humans who end up transformed over time? The stigmatics don’t hit quite the same note, even if Demon the Descent is very cool

What is the attrition rate of each splat?

And how severely does becoming a member of it decrease (or increase!) your lifespan? For example, vampires can probably expect to unlive at least a little bit longer than they would have as a mortal, with a long tail end on the positive side. Meanwhile, werewolves live lives of violence, and dying young is to be expected. How does it pan out for the rest of the splats? Lets discount mortals, hunters and mummies, and assume things like "being dragged back to arcadia" are equivalent to death.

Existence Monist Readings

Hi all! I'm an near-complete novice in philosophy, having taken a course on predicate logic and a course on existentialism nearly a decade ago, but have recently begun participating in a reading group on social metaphysics. In it, we read part of Peter van Inwagen's Metaphysics, and its discussion of monism has me hooked, particularly in regards to Spinoza. I already plan on reading the Guru Granth Sahib, but I'm not sure where to start with Spinoza. What are some good recommendations for reading about his existence monist views, either primary or secondary?

Some creatures have more obvious countermeasures than others- bring fire and sunlight against vampires, silver against werewolves, iron against changelings, and so on. But others don’t have obvious weaknesses. How does your cell go about surviving a fight with these stranger things? Do they bring smoke grenades and flashbangs when dealing with a wizard, or do they just curl up in a sniper‘s nest and aim for the head? What about the ghost-ridden, who keep getting back up after death? And so on!
