Barroch the Arisen (Early version)

v2.37 early version for Barroch the Arisen from Dragon's Dogma 1 Dark Arisen. He's my main pawn for my NG+10 alongside Arisen Olra. I actually had a lot of fun designing him simply because he's basically a very skilled thief/assassin and doesn't show any real weaknesses (other than the fact he cannot seem to find or kill Daimon). So everything is just striving to make him look as badass as possible in a mysterious way, which I just simply love. Feedbacks & suggestions are more than welcome, if any.

I'll start with a fun fact. If you look closely, Barroch actually has a very similar face structure as Lord Julien. Equally if you want to include Barnaby from the Pawn Guild. So I did very little adjustment to his cheek/chin & jaw as he's mostly based on my Julien's design.

The major challenge in designing him would be his facial hair & skin texture. Because there's unfortunately, only one facial hair option. I took the liberty in attempting to utilize tattoos for his signature Mutton Chops. Luckily, it went quite well in pretty much most of the lightings.

I've also learned a bit about Barroch as I was making him. He's in fact, not that old (appearance wise)... as I was experimenting the wrinkle slider, which somewhere in the middle is what best suited him. He's just primarily an immortal with the face of a skilled & rugged man. However, there's actually only 1 single skin texture that fits him. So it's very important to always go out of your way to experiment as many options as possible to look for the best one that matches.

Previously in designing Lord Julien, I've learned that the scowling expression is closely tied to the brow depth. Looking from Barroch's side view, it's obvious he has quite a huge inner brow depth. It will create a natural scowl as long as it's slightly further than the nose bridge height. Alternatively, brow width also has a play on how naturally annoyed/angry the person is. So feel free to use this knowledge for your own design.

Lastly, I've paid a bit more attention to his overall expression than the rest of my characters, as I've always had the habit of prioritizing presentation over realism (though they are just as important). This is particularly noticeable in his eyes. He has this sharp/tense gaze at you whenever you visit his shop, it makes perfect sense for Barroch to have the hunter's eye. Anyone who survived Bitterblack Isle without the help of pawns, they have to be a force to be reckoned with on their own by being the apex predator. Even though Barroch mostly choose to avoid them, as he has no interests in killing beasts. He still remain as tough as the Wyrm itself.

To achieve that, it needs minimal upper eyelid exposure with a high and suitable level of squinting. This in turn also helps elongate the eyes for a more focused look. My own interpretation lies in minimizing his pupil size with an extra bright iris colour, so it gives out a slight tapetum lucidum effect under the darkness of the night. 'He's the hunter, as strong as the Wyrm, and everything else is the prey, when he can be bothered.'

This marks the half-way point of my series 3 DD1 characters. I will now only be finalizing and releasing all of the sliders for my previous characters so that Arisens from all platforms may create their favourite DD1 characters.

My last two DD1 characters will be 2 of them from the following, which I've yet to decide: Valmiro, Fourival, Feste, Caxton. I will most likely go for the first 2, both from preferences and in demand. If you have a preference on other characters, feel free to let me know.

You may also check out my other DD1 characters I've created previously, series 1: Mercedes Marten, Aelinore & Lord Julien (next release). Series 2: Madeleine, Quina, Reynard, Selene. Series 3: Olra.

If you want to hire my Barroch, he's available on PC with code: W34REEMUWVGO

Olra the Arisen (Early version)

Version roughly 2.32 for Olra the Arisen from Dragon's Dogma 1: Dark Arisen. She's the start of my series 3 DD1 character creation, at which I will be creating Barroch next (actually extremely hard to make 😓) plus another 2 characters (which I've yet to decide so feel free to let me know who you want to see). All 3 series of my DD1 characters' sliders will be properly finalised and uploaded to my channel sometime before the October DLC release. Some of the characters like Quina & Selene I might just release them straightaway without much changes, as I'm quite satisfied with their design. But they will still be announced altogether in this sub or in my channel!

Now technically speaking she shouldn't be difficult to design, but somehow ended up being even harder than Quina. One thing being that her eyes are downturned & monolids while being slightly round towards her nose bridge. So the creative & challenging part is how to adjust it with such limitations. That being said, her eye angle needs to be quite precise in this regard to maintain her likeliness.

Second part being her nose. You might've noticed she has a surprisingly large nose from the side view & with a very low nostril height. Now base on the dark gloomy lighting in BBI, it's not entirely obvious to notice that just on the front view, since she will pretty much always, be facing you.

Though adjusting her nose size from the side is actually not the tricky part, is more about how to maintain her likeliness in the front view.

Thirdly, I may have encountered some challenges on how to adjust her current base head to a more youthful look. For my first few versions of her, I noticed her features were a bit "sharp", that easily convey her into a more mature/witchy look (something we definitely don't want). One of the characteristics of a youthful look is basically rounder cheeks, at which it is based on the cheek/chin/jaw options in the CC. The cheek bulge should be adjusted with caution in this case. Her nose sharpness should also be carefully adjusted so she maintains a sort of triangular shape on both her nose bridge & nose tip.

I always ask for feedback, so lmk down below if you have any suggestions (and try to be as specific as you can please). I might adjust her depending on the feedbacks given, cos in the past it has helped me design characters like Lord Julien and Ser Mercedes.

Lastly, I don't know who to make for my last 2 DD1 characters. I'm thinking highly of Valmiro cos I like him a lot. I might consider on Fournival, Caxton or Feste as a default option. So let me know who you prefer!

In the meantime you can also check out my other DD1 characters I've already created. Series 1 Mercedes Marten, Aelinore their sliders already available in my channel with Lord Julien being next release (almost finished). My series 2 Madeleine, Quina, Reynard & Selene. Thank you!

Edit: For another few days after this post, I attempted pretty much all of the possible female base heads and suffice to say, none are able to perfectly capture her likeliness because of her unique eye feature. Her soft gaze requires a good amount of squinting, and as a result, completely contradicts to her downturned eye shape + her epicanthal fold. I'm awaiting possible new female base heads from the DLC in October to happily attempt another creation for Olra. Unless there will be more people attempting on recreating Olra, her current appearance will most likely be more or less, her final release.

Selene (Early version)

v1.7 Early release of Selene. She might actually be the first character that I'm able to fully release with very little changes as I'm generally quite satisfied with most of her facial features. I'd still love to hear for more feedbacks from fellow Arisen especially from those who beloved Selene.

So she is relatively straightforward to create in terms of choosing a base head. Which I'm able to identify straightaway (same as Lord Julien). Howeverrr, she has a much more precise makeup game at which it is the most challenging of all characters I've designed so far (just slightly above Mercedes). Including her skin tone and eye features.

One thing I've discovered by looking at most of her fan art is that, pretty much all of the artists has given her a slightly different eye angle, makeup or even skin tone. Yet all of them are able to capture her likeliness, almost flawlessly. Only her concept art follows a different approach, so I took little inspiration from it.

Starting with her skin tone, I first experimented with all of the lightest skin tone there is in the CC. And 1 to 2 of them (although still fairly accurate according to the lightings in the character creation), has a very dramatic alteration in-game (especially blue-ish skin tone under bright sunlight). Luckily I was able to find one that remains relatively consistent under all lightings.

It's easy to see that her eyes are her main feature, mainly being her eyeshadow & eyebrow, other than her unique Goth fashion. I gave her a relatively mystical (magic and mystery) kind of look by choosing type 2 eyes instead of the conventional type 1.

Following to her makeup, there're several art pieces suggests a varying of both blue and purple eyeshadow. For simplicity sake, I just went for a median value of combining both purple and blue. The makeup coverage should be very precisely adjusted so it doesn't look too exaggerated while still remaining true to her original identity.

Her eyeliner and her choice of eyebrows are a bit of my own interpretations, tho technically speaking you could exclude the eyebrows as she barely has any. My goal was to give her a cute/mesmerizing gaze sort of vibe at which combining her current eyebrow, further showcasing her innocent nature.

Another thing that entails this is that the spacing of her facial features should be relatively close to each other, this is in the utmost importance in-between her eyebrows/eyes and nose. Which otherwise would quite easily deviate her from her original identity. Unfortunately there's only one eyebrow type that actually helped enhancing her identity. The rest are either too soft or too dense to help with anything.

Selene will mark the end of my early release for my series 2 creations. After taking most of the feedbacks (at which I will try sharing the progress within this post), I will focusing on improving them further with my own adjustments before finally releasing their sliders to my YT channel.

You can check out my current series 2 creations including Madeleine, Quina and Reynard. Or my series 1 (with sliders already available) including Mercedes & Aelinore with Lord Julien being the next release.

Reynard (Early version)

As per subreddit rules, I will now be posting my first version of my Dragon's Dogma 1 characters' design on Fashion Dogma. It will be the same format but just on a different sub! If their sliders are made available, you will see it in the post title 😉

With that out of the way, the design for Reynard is equally as challenging, if not more than Quina (cos I'm just bad at designing male characters...). I have attempted roughly 4 different base heads and picked one that captured the most of his likeliness.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I have a way poorer judgement on male characters than it is for female characters. So if you spot a major difference in likeliness, it's not entirely a big surprise.

For Reynard, the first immediate challenge is the "how" on replicating his Stubble beard. I avoided using the available beard options in the CC as it is way denser than what it should be and there's no way of adjusting the thickness. What I did is picking the appropriate base skin due to a few of them comes with stubble beard. The skin colour is easily adjustable after so I'm not too worried about it.

If you've noticed, Reynard has a slightly diamond shaped head where his cheek width stood out the most. I have not yet found a way to replicate this aspect as of yet in DD2. Sliding the cheek width to maximum doesn't entirely do the justice either and it would look weirdly out of place. In the end, his face is more of a heart shape with another main aspect being his hairstyle that reframed it.

Lastly I was a bit baffled with the wrinkle options as it took me some time on it. Since I have previously given way more wrinkles to Julien and he looked fine with it. Practically speaking they are of the same age (at 33), but I guess Reynard just have a much fairer skin 😅 It kinda wouldn't make sense to make him older. So this option remains to be seen.

If you have any feedbacks for my character creation, please feel free to leave a comment down below. They have aided me greatly in the past and so I would love to keep this up as a tradition for my character creation post!

If this is your first time seeing my DD1 character creations. I have previously created Madeleine, Quina for my current run, with Selene being my next character. You may find sliders for Mercedes Marten & Aelinore in Fashion Dogma sub or via my channel. With Julien being the next release!
