Get iphone 17 or wait on 18?

Hello, for context I currently use an iphone 12 and recently it’s been getting quite slow for my tastes. I’ve heard differing opinions but would the move be to get one of the 17 models or wait until apple drops the 18? Thanks!

Not sure if this is just me but as someone who will have 166 units and 3-5 quarters before fall 2026 the new quarter based enrollment time just doesn’t make sense to me.

First off, I understand that a senior needs a class more than a freshman. This was already addressed in the unit based system, because it is not a terrible assumption that a senior will have more units complete versus a freshman.

Granted, the new system grants this same distinction, with the logical assumption that a senior will have more quarters complete versus a freshman.

But here is the issue: a freshman who wants to graduate early (aka me 🫠) now has worse enrollment times across the board, making graduating earlier significantly harder for current and incoming freshman.

Taking quarters as the measurement of how “far” someone is along their academic journey is unfair because by setting 12 quarters as the “finish line”, everyone who wants to graduate before 12 quarters now has to share enrollment times with peers who DO want to graduate at 12 quarters, making it harder for both groups.

The only positive I can see to this new system is that seniors on track to graduate in 12 quarters now face are shielded from underclassmen who are carried forward by high unit #s due to APs or just spamming classes. While this is a nominally good thing, I can’t imagine that a majority of underclassmen are like this (exorbitant unit #s) to the point where 4 year seniors (who have lots of units themselves) are struggling to graduate because their classes are being taken.

My main gripe with the new quarter system is that is rips away any sense of flexibility in graduation time/class load. Before, if you wanted to put in the work and graduate in 3 years, you could. If you wanted to graduate in 4, you could. Now everyone is put through this quarter limiter that I can only imagine is because UCSD wants people to stay as long as possible and pay as much tuition as possible.

If the goal was to literally stop people from jumping ahead by working harder, what does that say about how this school values your time and effort?
