I built a debate app for civility. Users wanted to be toxic.

So I’m obsessed with debate, I’ll be honest, and I’ve noticed, as I’m sure we all have, that discourse in recent years has gotten really toxic.

It’s either a dogpile, throwing insults, being condescending, I don’t need to rehash what I imagine we all already know.

I built an app where people could swipe on topics, get matched with someone who disagrees, and get a score on their civility. The idea was that if you’re always an asshole, your shitty civility score would follow you and no one would want to talk to you.

I added a feature in passing called toxic mode that did not judge your civility. Spew your venom, no holds barred.

That was the idea.

Every time I got an install on the app, every single user immediately jumped into toxic mode. Out of 100+ downloads, not a single person wanted to have a civil discussion. They wanted the messy version. The heated version. The version that felt more like a chaotic internet argument than a polite debate club.

So I stopped fighting it and built a lightweight browser version where you can just pick a topic and jump in:

https://thinklavender.com/ragebait

The goal is still to get people talking to people they disagree with. Maybe the first step is not making everyone perfectly civil. Maybe it is just getting them in the same room.

And if that room has to be a little toxic to get people through the door, so be it.

Would love feedback on the idea and whether this feels like something people would actually try.

How much do you procrastinate?

Im wondering how much other students here procrastinate. I see a lot of people seemingly studying all the time, but then I also hear a lot of panic towards midterms and finals which makes me wonder if a lot of the studying is performative or disguised procrastination. Let me know how it is for you.

I sent my transcript to USD instead of UCSD, am I cooked?

I fixed it as soon as I got the msg and I emailed admissions. I went to De Anza (quarter system) so I had asked until July 5th to send my transcript.

ap score free sends question

hi everyone!

Incoming first-years are known to send in their transcripts before July 1st, but the deadline to send AP scores is July 15 this year. Since college board has the option to do a “free send” where every score selected goes to a single college for free, I have been waiting until tomorrow to use this option so I can send them all together simultaneously.

I’ve been seeing that people from other colleges sent in their AP scores earlier and are seeing their “senior year” scores on their portals before July 6th. Since I’m sending it on July 6th, will the scores be “late” for course registration? I didn’t know you could send in all of your scores (including senior year scores) before they even came out somehow.

Just wanted to ask to get anyone else’s experience or any insight people would have about this scenario. Maybe I’m completely wrong but I want to make sure I’m not late since I know a lot of my friends also waited to get the scores then use the free send.

take gen chem freshman year or save it for summer? (neurobio)

i'm an incoming neurobiology major in marshall college. i don't know much so sorry if this is a dumb question.. i didn't take ap chem in high school, so i need to take the whole chem sequence (6a, 6b, 6c, 7l) and then ochem (40a, 40b) after that. i wanted to take two semesters at a cc this summer to clear the gen chem sequence quickly but started my research too late.. all summer courses were full but this fortunately freed up my summer to go travel!

i'm now debating between taking the whole sequence this year and saving the courses for next summer. either way i'll need to have it all done by sophomore year so i can do ochem then, but is there any reason for me to pick one option over the other? or is there something i'm unaware of that makes the summer thing impossible? i'd like to hear any insight you all can offer :)

additionally, anyone with general advice about the neurobio major or marshall college feel free to comment or dm me!! thank youu

Do profs take AI detectors seriously anymore?

My essay won’t stop showing 40-50% A.I. even though I wrote it😭😭
I’m sick of trying to reword it when I’m not even at fault. But I’m also terrified that this is going to cause an academic integrity situation.

However, I’ve also known a lot of friends who submit A.I. stuff repeatedly and never get in trouble.

Do professors take A.I. detectors seriously knowing there’s many false positives? How worried should I be? Should I keep rewording?

dorm questions!!

Questions about UCSD new Marshall dorms co 2030
- Are there water stations or should I get a Brita? And are there places to get ice for your water?
- Are there places where you can get boiled water for free or should I just get a water boiler?
Is there AC in the Marshall dorms? I heard there isn’t and thought I should probably bring a fan if I like to be kept cool during the night
- People say to bring big trash bags but I’m wondering why people say this and where they keep them? I was planning on just having a mini trash can in the room
- Do you think I’ll need a desk hutch? Because it seems like a waste of money but I also want to make use of vertical space
- Any reccs for a mattress topper that is good quality but affordable for the UCSD Marshall beds?
- Should I get a microwave with my roommate or is there already one built in the kitchen
- Do you think the mini fridge will be useful even though there are two large fridges for communal use?
- How is the lighting? Should me and my roommate invest in a big lamp for the room?

Volunteering at the VA

Has anyone had difficulty with onboarding/processing to volunteer at the VA Medical Center next to campus? I got accepted for a volunteer position and completed my fingerprinting almost 7 months ago and have not been approved/processed yet. They initially told me processing should take 1.5-2 months. I've been contacting the coordinators but no update.

Pls help!! What on campus housing should I request?

Hi everyone,
I’m an incoming transfer who didn’t get into PCW 😭 and now have to choose between Rita, pepper canyon east, and Pangea. I have no idea which is best, I’ve heard too many bad things about each of the options.
The things I care abt most, I guess, is not dealing w things breaking down a bunch (which I heard happens in PCE and Pangea). And also I’m a pretty light sleeper. While I’m going to request a single, in case I do get put in a double, I’m worried about the bunk beds in Rita, I feel like if my roommate tosses and turns a lot (like me) that being in that bunk beds structure means the whole thing will shake and I’ll have an even harder time sleeping.
Any advice guys? I’m kinda freaking out, I thought about living off campus, but my therapist is encouraging me to live on campus so I can better build community, but I’m worried about the adjustment.

The eucalyptus forest jump spots are impressive — but can we please pack out our trash?

What’s bumming me out is the trash. Water bottles, energy drink cans, and wrappers are scattered all around the jump lines and tree bases. It doesn’t take much effort to pack out what you bring in.

Riders should keep in mind: unofficial jump spots exist only as long as the community tolerates them. Slowing down when passing walkers and packing out more trash than you brought in builds the goodwill that keeps spots like this open. Leaving it trashed hands anyone who wants the jumps bulldozed an easy argument — and potentially every bike rider loses, not just the jumps.

You put serious work into building those lines. Don’t let a few empty Smartwater bottles be the reason someone flattens them. Pack it out, keep the spot.

need help

TO PREFACE THIS, I AM NOT ANTI-VAX. I BELIEVE IN VACCINES AND I WANT TO GET VACCINATED. I AM AN INCOMING FRESHMAN AND I HAVE TO FIGURE THIS OUT BY JULY 15 OR ELSE I CANNOT ENROLL.

Hi all. I have been vaccinated my whole life except for the meningitis vaccine because my parents (NOT ME!!!!!) became anti-vax after the COVID-19 vaccine. they are making me fill out a religious exemption form, and claim we are catholic, except we aren’t and i’m worried it will be declined because i don’t know how to adequately prove being Catholic means no vaccine. On the other hand, if I secretly do get the vaccine, and they find out, they won’t be paying my tuition. What do I do? I’m not anti-vax at all and UCSD is my dream school.

UCSD Labor Center Committing Wage Theft on Students

I am a student and was working for the UCSD Labor Center educating students about their labor rights, then at the end of the quarter they said they cannot pay me for the work I completed for them. How ironic right?

I asked a third party department at UCSD to help with this situation and they said the Labor Center was adamant about not paying me and started becoming aggressive towards them so they wanted to opt out of helping.

I asked the other staff members at the Labor Center for help and they said they are overworked themselves and are scared of the head and executive director of the center because she yells at them a lot and keeps them overtime without pay, and that it’s best just to keep your head down. How can the executive director host events advocating for change and organizing workplaces and promoting unions while simultaneously mistreating and berating her staff?

What kind of Labor Center exploits labor like this? I signed a W2 and everything with them, so they’re LEGALLY supposed to pay me. I wanted to join unions and organizing to help the working class but if this is what it looks like I don’t want to be in this field at all. I’m financially in debt now and unable to afford rent or groceries. I don’t mean to fall into the “doomer” mindset but what am I supposed to do? Is there any hope to the movement if these “helpful” institutions are also exploiting us?
