Looking to commission an indigenous artist for rattle making, or buying and restoring an existing piece (BC)

Hi, I'm Martha, percussionist of the Vancouver Drum Circle. I love exploring and bridging musical cultures with my rattles, starting with representing my honorary family of the Maasai People of the Kilimanjaro Region. Via happenstance and gifts from other members, my collection now includes my famous black stage rattles, a shekere, a cabasa, some coconut shakers, a thin-wood maraca I restored, and a washboard Mcguiver, showcasing several musical techniques from four different continents.

Then the other day I was at the Museum of Anthropology, where I saw the beautifully carved wooden rattles of the Haida Peoples, and fell in love immediately. Upon research online I saw that various local indigenous tribes make small-head hide rattles from moose skin. That made me realize that I was certainly missing a piece of Canadian Indigenous art to honor those whose grounds I play on. As this is a somewhat unusual request though, I realize that I may have to resort to finding someone outside the province if necessary.

I'm hoping to commission an artist for either a set of hide rattles or (better yet!), a carved wood rattle. I've seen some online platforms that sell them, but I'm wary of supporting mass production over an actual indigenous artist.

Alternatively, I have peer-inherited and restored damaged shakers before, so I'd be happy to honor an existing piece too, if it so happens to be collecting dust on your shelf and you'd like to see it played.

I'm also hoping to find someone who can demonstrate to me the traditional technique of playing the instrument and share commonly used rhythms. If anyone here has the skillset/inherited knowledge to create them, or knows someone who does, please feel free to reach out. Thanks!

Looking forward to collaborating :)

Isn't it so nice to work for a large cooperation for free?

Got woken up this morning by a random driver ding dong ditching us! He had apparently tried to deliver to 2001 instead of 201, beat on our door like some kind of emergency, and then ran to the elevators when he realized it was the wrong apartment. Huh?

There I stand then in my bathrobe, no package, no one there. It's not even our package in the first place; we're waiting for Amazon. I call the office who tells me a Purolator truck just left. Huhh??

This is a constant issue here; every apartment has a buzzer number (he probably found us in the directory and thought 201/2001? Close enough!) but the buzzer is never communicated between order and delivery. So we've once missed a AC delivery in the middle of a heat wave before, because they claimed "we weren't there", when they never even "rang the bell". I see "we missed you"-slips on the door all the time, which doesn't make any sense (unless signature is needed), because the system calls our phones. We could be at work or at the grocery store and buzz you up, so that's just straightup BS.

Just spent two hours trying to file a complaint of a technical issue. The chat "customer representatives" are just dumb AIs that keep asking me for the tracking number or receiver, though I keep telling them that I'm not actually the receiver.

Then I called, waiting time 45 min. Ok, so I request callback, they call me 30 min later, and there's no one on the other end. For a minute and a half I try to talk to them, ask to call back, hang up. Of course no one calls back. So I call again, staying in the line this time.

when I finally reach someone, the Lady basically blames apartment 201: They must've given the wrong code. I tell her: that's the exact issue. There's no way to do that most of the time. The driver confused 201 and 2001. So now she wants to file a complaint with local management to punish the driver. And I mean, sure, ding dong ditching is pretty rude (a simple "sorry wrong door" would've done the trick), but that's not the issue here, is it??

So, I insist; I want to file a complaint about internal technical errors, not with driver management. Purolator needs to find a way for residents to give their buzzer number when ordering the delivery. Our building can't possibly be the only place affected. She says, management will listen to the recording of the call and take action. Suuuurreee...!

Two hours later, and we've got some empty promise as a result. I called my building management again, to tell them that, if 201 is missing their package, they need to call Purolator to give them their buzzer code (that's what I did after the AC was delayed by a week). So, in summary, Purolator fcked up, so I inform the management, so they can inform 201, so they can inform Purolator, so they can do their damn job.

What is this timeline we live in??

What's going on?

Help. I've been having sync issues again and my new chapter won't show properly (works on mobile not on desktop), and now I keep getting this pop-up. I haven't deleted anything anywhere. Am I being hacked? Is this because of the new site or the usual sync error? I don't want to select anything and accidentally delete something, but this notification keeps popping up. Has anyone encountered this before?

What are your thoughts on this? I've been following language studies about meerkats and the Japanese tit bird, how we're decoding their language and getting closer to human-animal communication/translation. When I read that they chatted with a whale for 20 min, I got excited. Then I saw the point of the study. Extraterrestrials. Look, I'm as curious about aliens as the next guy. But can we maybe start by learning to talk to the creatures on this planet? Why is a study only worth financing when it's about hypothetical creatures billions of light-years away?
