Ambient light and lumens

Every time someone posts a picture of a laser projector for their living room half the comments are just “turn off your lights bro" or "get better curtains". Like yes, obviously a blacked-out room is ideal. But some of us living rooms that aren’t dedicated home theaters.

I’ve been using the Horizon 20 Max and it does 5700 ISO lumens and for me the ambient light situation is so much better than I expected going in. Afternoon light coming in through the curtains it might be sometimes a little washed out but still very watchable. Not calibration session quality obviously, but for casual viewing, sports, kids stuff in the background etc it is totally fine.

Moreover, instead of a TV, the 120” image changes how you actually use a living room space, even if the conditions aren’t perfect. And when you want the real experience you just dim the lights a bit.

Lets say you have a good quality screen. What lumen threshold do people here actually find acceptable for a semi lit room? Is 5700 ISO lumens enough for you? At what point it would make even bigger difference? 7000 ISO lumens?

Portable screen for indoors?

We don't have a TV at the summer home. Never really felt like it was missing until World Cup season. This time I brought the XGIMI Mogo 4 with me. Set it on the powerbase stand and tethered it to my phone. Room had some daylight coming in, which I was a little nervous about, but it held up surprisingly nicely. The power bank also gave some extra brightness and helped me avoid "eco" mode which reduces brightness. The only downside is that I was limited to this room and small beige space on the wall.

It got me thinking though for situations like this do you bother with a portable screen? What kind of screen are you personally using that is portable enough and looks nice indoors?

Upgraded my setup with a new projector

Got a new projector on the shelf. Upgrading from the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max to Titan Noir Max and this thing looks great in the room. Matte black finish that goes really well together with my shelving system. Build feels solid, lens housing is great and it has an overall premium design in my opinion.

Improved specs as well with the dual dynamic iris, new 0.47" SST DMD chip, 7000 ISO lumens, 10,000:1 native contrast. Curious to see if the iris actually delivers on the black levels that's the main thing I want to figure out coming from the H20 Max.

Going to put real hours on it over the next few weeks before I post a proper review: contrast, input lag, fan noise, H20 Max comparison.

Pics: two from the unboxing, one of it on the shelf where it lives now.

In terms of setup I already have a screen in mind. But one thing to note this projector doesn’t ship with a built-in streamer, so I’m planning to run my Google TV Streamer with it for now. Curious if anyone’s using something better: Apple TV 4K, Shield, anything else worth the switch? And what else would you add to a projector like this: audio, lighting anything I’m not thinking of?

Warmness of projector image

Reposting this as it got removed before, hopefully all good this time.

So a friend came over last week and mentioned my projector image looked a bit warm. Mostly that reds were a bit aggressive and skin tones slightly off. Honestly I never really noticed it myself but it got me curious so I did a bit of reading around. Turns out this is pretty common with triple laser projectors, the wide colour gamut that makes them so vibrant can also push colours beyond where they should be on default settings. Figured I'd share what I found in case its useful for others here. For me it came down to three things. Biggest difference was switching colour temperature from D65 to Color Temperature 1. Second thing was keeping laser power higher than I normally would, apparently dimming it actually adds warmth which I had no idea about. Third was turning DBLE off first just to get a clean starting point before tweaking anything else.

With my final settings I ended up at Dolby Vision Dark for HDR content, Movie mode otherwise. Other settings I chose were Color Temperature 1, DBLE off, laser power 8, Color Tuner Red -5 Blue +2, motion smoothing off. This is on the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max btw. Didn't take long at all to tweak it and the difference was bigger than I expected.

Added two photos: one on default settings and one after. Skin tones and the sand in the scene look quite a bit more natural on the second one. In my opinion at least it is noticeably less red, but its difficult to capture it very well on picture.

Anyone else here using triple laser, how do you handle the warmth? Have I missed anything obvious? I am Based in EU if that makes any difference for firmware or colour presets etc

A friend visited recently and pointed out that my projector image was running a bit warm reds slightly aggressive, skin tones a touch overdone. I had not really noticed it myself but it got me curious enough to do some reading. Turns out it is actually a pretty common characteristic of triple laser projectors in general, the wide colour gamut that makes them look so vibrant can also push colours further than they should be on default settings. Thought it might be of help to others here too.

Based on what I found and some tweaking of my own setup, it came down to three things. Switching colour temperature from D65 to Color Temperature 1 made the biggest difference, keeping laser power higher (apparently lowers redness) and turning DBLE off to get a clean baseline.

Final settings on my XGIMI Horizon 20 Max ended up at Dolby Vision Dark for HDR (Movie mode in other cases), Color Temperature 1, DBLE off, Laser power 8, Color Tuner Red -5 Blue +2, motion smoothing off. Did not take long at all and the difference was pretty noticeable. This projector luckily has enough picture controls to get things where you want them once you know what to look for.

Added two photos too, one with generic settings and one after these adjustments. The difference on skin tone and the sand is quite noticeable and a lot less red on the second one with a more natural look.

Any other triple laser users here how do you tweak your picture settings to reduce redness? Have I missed anything important? I am Based in EU if that is relevant for any regional differences in firmware or colour presets
