Budget projector under $400usd

Moving into a new apartment in the US and thinking about getting a projector for my bedroom.

It would be about 10ft from a white wall above my bed on a shelf.

Only want it for movies/shows.

Ideally I’d want a smart projector but I could always plug it into my Xbox or pc

Wanted to try something different as I’ve never used a projector before

Thanks in advance!

EU: NexiGo PJ40 Pro vs Optoma Photon Life PH31 — Which One Should I Choose?

$300.... I’m trying to decide between the NexiGo PJ40 Pro Google TV and the Optoma Photon Life PH31, and I’d really appreciate some advice from people who have used either one.

For context, my setup is:

  • 🧱 Wall width: 2 meters / 6.56 feet
  • 📏 Projector distance from wall: around 2.6–3 meters / 8.53–9.84 feet
  • 📚 The projector will sit on a shelf behind me, slightly above head level
  • 🎬 I’ll mainly be using it for movies/TV and general entertainment.

With this setup, which projector would you choose? I’m particularly interested in picture quality, brightness, contrast/black levels, fan noise, ease of setup, streaming/Google TV experience, and overall reliability.

Also, will either of these projectors have trouble producing the right image size on a 2-meter-wide wall from that distance? I want to make sure I’m not buying something that’s a poor fit for my room.

If you’ve used or compared these two, I’d love to hear which one you recommend and why. Thanks!

I want upgrade my camping Setup - Suggestions

- Optoma PH31 (€350), mas estou preocupado apenas com o alinhamento dos cantos;

- Tela 2,5mx1,7m

Região da Europa (Portugal/Espanha)

Qualquer opinião ou sugestão seria bem-vinda para me ajudar a decidir.

And obviously it has to be dustproof.

Looking for a projector w/side ports in US

Budget is about 3-$400 looking for something with decent lumens for the bedroom night time use
I’m looking to put it up against the wall so it would need to have all ports hdmi power etc on the sides
The shelf I’m putting it on is 10 inches deep so most projectors with rear ports won’t work, also would help if it was a smart projector
Any advice would be appreciated thank you !!

Was looking into epson ef12 but can’t seem to find it in budget but it has the ports in the side for reference

Would love to get the optoma ph31 but all the plugs are in the back and a streaming stick wouldn’t work since the back would be against the wall

Looking for a projector recommendation in India — ₹20k budget

Region: India 🇮🇳
Budget: ₹20,000, somewhat flexible
Room size: 124" x 111"
Projector-to-wall distance: 60"
Intended screen size: 55" - 75"

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on buying my first projector in India.

My budget is currently around ₹20,000, although I'm willing to stretch it somewhat if there's a significant improvement in quality or reliability.

I've gone through quite a few projector recommendations and reviews, but I'm finding the Indian market particularly confusing. There seem to be a lot of projector brands selling products that appear to be based on Chinese OEM models with different branding, and it's difficult to figure out which ones are actually decent and which ones are essentially the same cheap hardware under a different name.

I originally had a ₹10k budget, then increased it to ₹15k, and eventually ₹20k. Now I'm wondering whether I'm simply trying to force a projector into a budget where it doesn't make sense.

My use case is fairly simple: movies, TV shows, YouTube and general entertainment at home. I'm not looking for a high-end home theatre, but I do want something that provides a genuinely good viewing experience and isn't likely to become a regret purchase.

At this point, I'm considering three possibilities:

  1. Buy a projector around ₹20k–₹25k if there's actually a worthwhile option.
  2. Increase the budget if that's what it realistically takes to get a decent projector.
  3. Forget the projector altogether and buy a second-hand TV from Facebook Marketplace, which may provide better picture quality and reliability for the money.

So I'd really appreciate some advice from people who have actually used projectors in India:

  • Is ₹20k–₹25k enough for a decent projector?
  • Which models would you recommend in this price range?
  • Are there any brands/models available in India that I should specifically look at?
  • Are the commonly recommended budget projectors actually worth buying, or are they better avoided?
  • At what budget does it start making sense to buy a projector rather than a TV?
  • Given my room dimensions and throw distance above, what would you recommend?

I'm happy to spend a little more if there's a clear reason to do so. I just don't want to keep increasing my budget from ₹10k → ₹15k → ₹20k → ₹30k without knowing where the point of diminishing returns is.

Thanks!

Philips ProPix 860 Projector Review

Disclaimer: This was translated into English from Spanish by ChatGPT. I could have posted it in Spanish and relied on Reddit’s automatic translation, but I don’t trust it enough. Sorry for the inconvenience.

First, let’s go over the basic specifications of this projector:

  • 2,600 ANSI lumens
  • 3LED light source rated for 30,000 hours
  • Throw ratio: 1.49–1.65:1
  • Supports screens up to 150"
  • 0.65" DMD
  • 1,500:1 native contrast ratio
  • 2.5 kg weight
  • HDR10 and HLG support, Game Mode, and CMS
  • 2× HDMI, 1× RS232, USB-A 5V 1.5A, 3.5 mm audio out

Now, let’s talk about some of the tests I’ve performed and my experience using it over the past two days.

  • Let’s start with its ability to adapt to a room, which is quite poor. There is no autofocus, no auto keystone, no manual four-corner keystone adjustment, and the only options available are vertical keystone correction and digital zoom.
  • This is an office projector with no built-in operating system. It does have some features specifically intended for office use, such as Freeze mode, Pg Up/Pg Down buttons, and a dedicated button for displaying the presentation pattern.
  • Its HDMI ports do not support CEC, and the included remote only works via infrared. This also makes sense considering that it is primarily an office projector.
  • The zoom is dependent on the focus, and vice versa, so getting both properly adjusted can be somewhat difficult.
  • By default, it has six picture modes: Presentation, Spreadsheet, Movie, Standard, User 1, and User 2.
  • There is also a shortcut button for selecting between the three power modes for the light source: Eco, Normal, and Dynamic (dynamic contrast mode). There is no dedicated brightness mode for the light source.

Once the projector is properly positioned, it powers on quickly and automatically searches for an input source, so it starts directly on my Roku Stick. From that point onward, the interface experience will depend on whichever media player you prefer.

The colors in Standard mode look very good, although some adjustment to the brightness and contrast is necessary to avoid elevated blacks and to increase brightness slightly. Using the test patterns available on YouTube, I found that a brightness setting of 46 and contrast of 15 works well for SDR, while brightness 47 and contrast 17 work well for HDR.

Likewise, the 6500K color temperature mode looks good—not too yellow and not too green.

The only color that required some attention was yellow. It had a greenish tint that made it look more like fluorescent yellow. Using the CMS, I was able to correct this by changing the hue to -65 for SDR and -75 for HDR.

With that, we can wrap up the subjective image-quality portion. I don't have the equipment to measure color gamut coverage or EOTF tracking. What I can confirm is that, with these settings, yellow no longer looks green, there is no elevated black level or black crush, and the projector is capable of distinguishing RGB values 253 and 254 from 255.

Now let's move on to some more technical tests.

  • Noise: It isn't particularly quiet, but it isn't particularly loud either. Here are measurements of the noise level taken at 30 cm and 5 cm from the projector.

5 cm

30Cm

  • Brightness: It is decent. I'm not going to discuss Presentation mode because, well... it's green. In User 1 mode, after calibration, I was able to measure a total of 1,100 ANSI lumens. Here is a measurement of the brightest part of the image and another of the darkest part, so you can also see the brightness uniformity.

Maximun Brightness

Uniformity Brightness

  • Contrast: This is the projector's strongest point. Its 0.65" DMD helps a lot here. I was able to measure around 1,500:1 native contrast and around 3,000:1 dynamic contrast. Here are some measurements of the light output in Dynamic mode and the perceived black level on the screen.

Contrast Test

Contras Test, Changes betwen 5 and 6, Native is 11

1/30s 1600 ISO Samung S23 For the Eyes there is no hotspotting.

If you think this looks very similar to the review that my fellow reviewer JayceOoi did of the Philips GamePix 800, that's because it is. This projector is basically the same unit without the Google TV dongle. However, that model is marketed as a gaming projector, with support for 120 Hz and 8 ms input lag. Have they cut those features from the office model? Let's find out.

With my laptop connected to HDMI 1, the projector definitely accepts a 120 Hz signal and activates its Game Mode, which is a good sign.

But is that 120 Hz actually real? Well, here is a screenshot of the Blur Busters 120 Hz Frameskipping Test.

12 Squares at 1/10S Shutter speed

Voilà! No frame skipping!

As for input lag, following JayceOoi's testing method, I decided to test it myself and found that, at 120 Hz in Game Mode, the projector actually has less input lag than my laptop's own display. So I can confidently say that there is no significant input lag affecting gaming performance.

InputLag Less than laptop screen itself (No Optimus Laptop D: )

Now, I'm not saying that this is an excellent budget gaming projector. Image quality is considerably reduced when Game Mode is enabled. It's not unbearable, but it may require better configuration on the PC side, and I'm not entirely sure how to optimize that.

Here is a series of videos showing the image quality in HDR and SDR, time it takes to transition from an HDR signal to an SDR signal, The Gain of my Screen, as well as the amount of RBE a 30p content.

Keep in mind that these videos show my projection onto an 80" long-throw Fresnel screen with a 1.6 gain. In reality, the screen is just the raw material attached directly to the wall.

Which drop-down screen can magically fix my living room layout?

Skip to tl;dr if you couldn't care less about my seating setup problems.

I currently have my projector (a Groview JQ818C) sitting on a shallow bookshelf 6' from the floor, with a throw distance of 10' to the opposite wall, and a projection size of 80"x48" (16:9 ratio). The wall is a landlord special, a semi-matte light beige, but it's not very textured and I'm not very picky, so this setup has worked pretty well for me since I moved to this apartment 2 years ago.

However, I've been struggling to figure out how to make my living room layout work. Having the projector sit on the bookshelf was the simplest and most cost-effective way to set it up, but it also means that the only logical place for the couch is directly in front of the bookshelf, so I can't access the lower shelves unless I move the whole couch. The couch kinda fits in front of the bay windows, but it's almost impossible to watch anything from anywhere but the farthest left seat. Across from the bay windows is a wide, arched doorway that leads into the kitchen, which I don't want to block off if I can possibly avoid it. It's also just not a huge space - about 10'x10', with a little extra space thrown on because of the windows (I think I made it look a little more narrow in my second sketch).

So far, I think my best bet is to install a drop-down screen above the bookshelf, and move both the couch and the projector to the opposite wall. I don't want a fixed screen (nowhere to put it + doesn't solve the problem of the seating arrangements) and I don't want to go too cheap and wind up doing a lot of tinkering/maintenance (such as a DIY option using a white sheet - might try that for the backyard though).

tl;dr Looking for a drop-down screen to install above a bookshelf so I can stop moving my couch around.

  • Location: West Coast, United States
  • Room Dimensions: 10' x 10'
  • Budget: $400 at absolute most (ideally looking for <$250 but can pay more if what I want just isn't available at a cheaper price point)
  • Projector: Groview JQ818C (standard throw, currently 72" from floor)
  • Ideal Screen Gain: ~1.0-1.5 (full curtains not quite enough for satisfactory viewing during brightest hours, but don't want to blind myself watching at night)
  • Ideal ALR: ??? (I don't fully understand this, but the ambient light would all be coming from below/side; I don't use my overhead/ceiling light)
  • Ideal Format: drop-down (wall mount strongly preferred over ceiling mount or tripod)

Any other info/suggestions welcomed! Especially curious to hear from anyone who has/had a similar setup, with a screen in front of a bookshelf.

Looking for a good 4K HDR 3D projector Recommendations?

Hi everyone,

I am from Navi Mumbai, India and I have a decent sized flat in which I use a 1080p projector which can project update to 100 inch in my room which is 12ft X 14ft.

I’m looking to buy a 4K projector with HDR and good 3D support for a home cinema setup.

My priorities are:

Native or excellent-quality 4K

Good HDR performance

Full 3D support with good brightness and minimal crosstalk

High contrast and good black levels

Ideally 200"+ screen capable

Good motion handling for movies

Budget: ₹2–3 lakh

I’m currently considering options from Epson, BenQ, XGIMI and other brands.

Would love recommendations from people who have actually used these projectors, especially for 4K HDR + 3D movies.

Also interested in hearing about:

Best projector for pure movie watching

Best HDR performance

Best 3D experience

Best value for money

First projector, throw ratio problems

I'm planning to buy my first budget projector (EU, Hungary, budget <500 EUR, pref. used), and after spending many hours reading about different products, I realized that NONE of them would actually work because they would all project too big images. My room is 3.7m across, and due to furniture the screen can only be 80" (180 cm wide).

Anyway, this requires a throw ratio of about 1.85, and in the sub 1000 EUR category I mostly find business class Epsons like the EB-FH52 or EH-TW6250. These can be bought for 250-400 EUR used.

Now, I could mount a regular 1.2 throw ratio projector to the center of the ceiling next to the lamp, but that would look horrible in my opinion, especially since I'd have to drop it down significantly because of the 3 meter interior height (or get a model with good vertical lens shift but that's a whole other Pandora's box). Also the cabling.

Back to the longer throw ones... these business oriented models offer worse picture quality than cinema oriented ones, but because of the smaller image, longer throw maybe it wouldn't be so bad? EB-FH52 has 4000 ANSI lumens so at worst I could get a grey screen to improve contrast at the cost of brightness?

I wouldn't use it too much, so I'd prefer a seamless, least visible (but fixed!) setup, like a wall mount in front of the acoustic wall panels or just placing it at the further end of the sofa. I know the latter would require some horizontal keystone correction, I don't know how severe the quality drop would be though.

Any tips, thoughts? Am I missing anything? I'm aware I could just buy a TV if I don't want a gigantic screen, and I know it would even be more practical in some ways, but ehh, I don't want to buy a TV, I want a projector (or at least I think I do).

My experience with a $300 budget projector in India.

After researching for around a month, I decided to buy the Pixpaq Gold Raymastered for INR 26,999 ($300) as the good brands like benq, XGIMI, and optoma are way outside my budget (double to be precise cuz of the import and all those things) and finding a secondhand projector is a headache (in India).

So I either had to save to buy from a good brand or take the risk because I don't think I can wait to save.

Edit: For everyone asking why I didn’t buy the XGIMI vibe one, the main reason is the lower brightness, especially since I am using a 100 to 120 screen. I also need an extra HDMI ARC for my 5.1 speaker system and the vibe one only has a single HDMI port. The raymastered is a newly launched model with better specs and MEMC support. Overall, it just fits my setup much better.

About the projector's performance:

Even though this acts as a 4K monitor and accepts a 4K HDR signal from my PS5 and laptop, this is still a native 1080p projector.

But for 1080p, the quality is really good and is not as low resolution as I imagined.

Try playing high-bitrate 4K movie files to get that theater level quality.

The videos I attached are all shot in a dark room, and the display looks waaay better IRL. https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/mobile/folders/1K-wL3-wfF8rw0uYAJ7sF29BGwbD9gsFz

Pros:

  1. The brightness is really good. Perfect for a dark room and also okay for a medium lit room.(Claims 3450 ansi but is actually around 1000-1100 ansi lumens)

  2. Short throw ratio. At 9 feet, it projected 120 inches for me.

  3. There are two 15 watt speakers, so the sound is really good.

  4. In game mode, the latency is good enough to play singleplayer games on my ps5, but it's not ideal for competitive games imo.

  5. The colours are really good, as the HDR is working as I expected (most of the brands in this price range have a gimmick HDR, which is basically sdr).

Cons:

  1. The autofocus and auto keystone don't work properly, and I have to manually adjust them, which takes forever man.

  2. The 120hz VRR, which the company claims, is fake and is actually MEMC, which smoothens the motion (which is great for games and sports btw and high frame rate movies like Avatar).

  3. Laggy Android OS and no Google TV.

  4. Mounting it to the ceiling is difficult.

  5. The contrast ratio is not that good as claimed.

The customer support is okish, and I have a 1 year warranty so no problem there.

And for the conclusion, I recommend this projector for watching HDR movies and ps5 gaming.

brightness of projectors in a dark room

Australian here

I'm only ever planning on using my projector at night, in my room thats around 4 by 6 metres, is there any point in buying a bright projector thats only ever going to be in darkness?

Can I forego this for something like fan noise instead?

Looking for a cheap projector (~ €100, max €130)

Hello, I'm looking to get a projector for my room and I found the following two options:

- Sony VPL-EW5 with only 33 hours of lamp time at 120 euros

- Optoma EW 1691e (lamp hours unknown) at 90 euros

I'm planning to project the image onto a white roller blind from 1.7m away (I don't have a blank wall or the space for a screen).

Would appreciate any input deciding between the two projectors or other recommendations. (Based in Germany)

Budget projector - decent quality and input lag for games.

Hello Guys,

Looking to buy my first projector here, My budget is around $150 will use it for some movies night indoors and play games sometimes with my friends (mario kart, Street fighters, mario party) so I don't know if all those projectors on amazon like Happrun H1, Magcubic etc. will have a decent input lag. I could use a streaming device so It does not have to be smart. But I want to be the smallest as possible so I can carry with me to my friends houses when we decided to use it.

Most of times will be used in a white wall in a distance around 9 to 12 ft. The projection size does not need to be that big. We could work with a 75" projection.

Any recommendations based on your knowledge and experiences?

Location: MA, United States

Room: smallest places 75"

Optoma PH31 Alternatives?

Hi there, so I'm in Canada and unfortunately when looking for the Optoma PH31 everyone recommends, on Amazon.ca it's $800 CAD (equivalent to 600 USD) which doesn't really make much sense as a budget option anymore. The seller for the $269 USD PH31 does not ship to Canada. I do live near the border and my plan was to buy on Amazon.com instead and have it shipped to an Amazon locker there but the seller doesn't ship to lockers there as well.

Just wondering what are alternatives to the PH31? Projector is going to be used in an almost pitch black bedroom about 10 feet from the wall. Just want a good value projector that plays 1080p native content, good brightness, contrast, under 400 USD. Mainly used for movies, tv shows, and occasional casual gaming sessions.

Just got my first projector: A used HY320 from marketplace.

A bit dim but good enough to watch shows and movies on! Really enjoy watching animated stuff but also watched the Islam fight on Sat with no problem.

Some shows are a bit too dim tho, like house of the dragon, but I'm hoping I can use this often when the NBA season starts
