XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K Laser Projector Review
Hi everyone! I am thrilled to share my review of the XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K Laser Projector.
I want to express my sincere thanks to XGIMI for sending me this unit for a community review. As always, my feedback and testing results are completely my own.
Let’s dive into its features, capabilities, and overall performance!
Unboxing & First Impressions
The packaging is minimal and sturdy. Everything is packed securely and neatly in the box without excessive waste.
Inside the box, you will find:
• The XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K Laser
• Compact power supply and cable
• Backlit Bluetooth remote control
• Two AAA batteries for the remote
• Quick start manual and warranty paperwork
Design and Build Quality
The first thing that struck me was the form factor. At roughly 3.4 lbs (1.55 kg), it feels as light and portable as a small laptop. The matte finish looks sleek and modern, and it does a great job keeping fingerprints away.
The built in stand design is fantastic. When closed, the stand wraps around the body like a frame, protecting the lens during transport or storage. Flipping it open gives you up to 150 degrees of tilt adjustment, making ceiling projection effortless without needing an extra tripod. Best of all, the stand holds its angle under its own tension and does not slip down, so your framing stays locked in place. If you do need a higher setup, there is also a standard tripod thread on the bottom.
Portability and Connections
On the back panel, XGIMI included a solid port selection:
• Two HDMI ports (including one with eARC support for external soundbars or receivers)
• Two USB ports
• 3.5mm headphone audio jack
• Power input port
One practical thing to keep in mind is port placement. Depending on how large or thick your HDMI cable is, it can stick out and restrict the projector from tilting straight up at the ceiling. I highly recommend using a 90 degree angle HDMI adapter so your cables stay out of the way when adjusting the angle.
The remote control is comfortably sized, lightweight, and features dedicated shortcut buttons alongside responsive backlighting for dark room navigation.
Initial Setup Experience
Plugging in the projector, flipping open the stand, and aiming it at your wall makes setup much easier compared to standard boxy units.
It features motorized optical zoom and automatic keystone correction, which makes fitting the image onto a screen quick and painless. On first boot, you are greeted with the standard Google TV setup, which lets you configure settings right from your phone or manually.
As for noise, the fan stays pretty quiet during normal viewing, though you will hear it kick up a bit if you crank the laser power up to maximum.
Picture Quality and Laser Performance
The Elfin Flip 4K uses an RGB triple laser light source paired with native 4K UHD resolution. The picture sharpness and color output are impressive right out of the box.
• Brightness (1,600 ISO Lumens): For a compact unit, 1,600 ISO Lumens provides enough punch to handle ambient light in dim or shaded rooms. In a fully darkened room, the image looks remarkably bright and vivid.
• Color Accuracy and Gamut: Thanks to the RGB triple laser engine, it covers up to 110% of the BT.2020 color space. Colors look rich and natural in Movie mode, while options like White Balance and Color Space allow for extra fine tuning.
• Image Size & Motorized Optical Zoom: The 0.98x to 1.3x motorized optical zoom allows you to resize the display from 40 up to 200 inches without losing 4K pixel resolution. While it can project up to 200 inches, I found that it looks particularly fantastic at 120 inches, and holds up wonderfully all the way up to 150 inches while maintaining great brightness and detail.
• Contrast, Dynamic Range & Shadow Detail: It features a 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio along with support for HDR10 and HLG. I watch a wide variety of content, including dark, moody movies where shadow detail is critical. Thanks to the dynamic black level enhancement, the projector was able to keep up remarkably well with the content I was viewing, preserving subtle details in dark scenes without washing out the rest of the image.
• Rainbow Effect and Motion: Motion handling is smooth and clean. However, it is worth noting that a subtle rainbow effect (color breakup) can be noticeable during high contrast or exceptionally bright scenes, particularly when running the projector at full laser power output.
Audio & Sound Performance
The projector comes equipped with a built in 7W Harman Kardon speaker system supporting Dolby Audio and DTS Virtual:X. While the onboard speakers do a great job filling a bedroom with clear vocal dialogue for quick viewing, I personally route everything through an AVR (Audio Video Receiver) for a full home theater setup.
• AVR Setup & eARC Performance: Connecting the projector directly to my AVR via the HDMI eARC port allowed me to pass high quality surround formats straight through to my speaker setup. Audio switching was seamless, giving me full multi channel sound for movies and games.
• Built in Harman Kardon Speakers: If you use the built in speakers on the go or in a temporary setup, speech clarity is crisp and clean without distortion at higher volumes.
• Low End Bass: Compact built in speakers naturally have limited lower frequency bass response. Utilizing an AVR or dedicated external sound system completely solves this, giving action scenes and music the full weight and punch they deserve.
Gaming Performance & Smart OS
Gaming Performance
To put its gaming capabilities through their paces, I tested the Elfin Flip 4K across three generations of PlayStation hardware: the PS3, PS4, and PS5.
• PlayStation 5 Experience: On current gen hardware, setting the projector to Game Mode drops latency to sub-1ms levels at 1080p @ 120Hz. Playing fast paced PS5 titles feels ultra responsive, smooth, and input lag is practically unnoticeable. Even when running in native 4K at 60Hz, the controls remain responsive and precise.
• PlayStation 3 & 4 Legacy Gaming: Connecting older systems like the PS3 and PS4 works effortlessly via HDMI. Legacy 720p and 1080p titles upscale cleanly onto the big screen without feeling sluggish.
• Built in Gaming Suite: The projector includes ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support, a virtual crosshair overlay, dynamic black level enhancement, and shadow boosting to help reveal details in dark in game environments.
Smart OS (Google TV)
• Native Streaming: Powered by Google TV, navigation is fast and intuitive once everything is running. Popular apps like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and YouTube run natively directly on the projector without needing streaming dongles.
One thing to note is that navigation felt a bit slow during initial setup. Because you have to download and install your apps right at the beginning, it takes some time for everything to finish updating, but once that process is complete, the OS runs smooth and snappy.
• Casting and Connectivity: Casting is enhanced by built in Google Cast, which simplifies mirroring photos or videos straight from your phone or Chrome browser.
• AirPlay Support: It is worth noting that Apple AirPlay is not natively built into the projector. Apple users will need to use third party receiver apps (like AirScreen or MagiCast through XGIMI's Projection Assistant) or rely on Chromecast compatible iOS apps to cast content from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
• Outstanding 4K sharpness and vibrant color performance from the triple RGB laser engine.
• Dynamic black level enhancement keeps up with diverse content and preserves critical shadow detail in dark movies.
• Built in 150 degree swivel stand makes positioning and ceiling projection effortless without a tripod.
• Motorized optical zoom (0.98x to 1.3x) lets you resize the image without losing 4K resolution.
• Handles 120 inch to 150 inch screen sizes exceptionally well in dim to dark room environments.
• Low input latency with sub-1ms response times, 120Hz refresh rate at 1080p, VRR, and ALLM for gaming.
• Native Google TV with official support for Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+.
• Quiet fan noise during standard viewing.
• Robust build quality with a strong tension hinge stand and a standard tripod thread on the bottom.
Cons:
• No internal battery (requires continuous AC power supply).
• Rear port placement can restrict full vertical tilt when using thick HDMI cables (90 degree adapter recommended).
• Minor rainbow effect visible in high contrast scenes at maximum laser power.
• No native Apple AirPlay support (requires third party apps or Chromecast compatible apps).
• Initial Google TV setup feels slow while apps update in the background, though it smooths out afterwards.
Who's This For?
• Casual Movie Lovers & Binge Watchers: Anyone who watches a variety of content and wants a big screen experience (120 to 150 inches) with great shadow detail in a bedroom, living room, or apartment.
• Console Gamers: Gamers playing on PS3, PS4, or PS5 who want ultra low latency, 120Hz refresh rates, and dedicated gaming enhancements on a massive display.
• Ceiling Projector Enthusiasts: Anyone who loves projecting onto the ceiling for cozy bedtime viewing, thanks to the flexible 150 degree swivel stand.
• Home Theater Enthusiasts with an AVR: Users who plan to pair the projector with an external audio video receiver and surround speakers via eARC for true cinematic sound.
Final Verdict
The XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K strikes an impressive balance between high end laser performance and grab and go convenience. Its built in swivel stand design makes setting up anywhere in your home a breeze, while the motorized optical zoom, automatic keystone, and low latency gaming support across multiple PlayStation console generations elevate it far beyond standard portable units.
While the lack of an internal battery means it is not completely off grid capable, and Apple users will need to work around the lack of native AirPlay, I would highly recommend this projector to anyone looking for an easy to set up, compact 4K experience in any environment. Its vibrant 4K picture, dynamic black level handling across varied content, seamless Google TV integration, and overall versatility make it a standout choice for home entertainment.

AV Access HDMI 2.0 Matrix Switch 4X2 4KMX42-H2A Review
Hi everyone! Today I am breaking down the AV Access HDMI 2.0 Matrix Switch 4X2 (4KMX42-H2A). Big shoutout and thank you to AV Access for reaching out and sending this over to me for a community review!
One of the most common complaints I see in the sub is that great projectors rarely have enough HDMI ports for a full media setup. Swapping cables back and forth gets old fast, and standard splitters do not give you much control. That is where a 4x2 matrix switch comes in to solve the port bottleneck while letting you route four sources across two displays independently. Let’s dive into the details and evaluate its performance.
Unboxing
Cracking open the box, AV Access gives you everything you need to get up and running right out of the package. The presentation is clean, and the hardware itself feels solid and well built. This unit definitely has some weight to it.
Here is a quick look at what is included inside:
• The HDMI Matrix Unit: The star of the show, featuring a sturdy metal housing with front panel controls.
• IR Remote Control: A dedicated remote so you can switch inputs across both outputs without getting up off the couch.
• Power Supply with Universal Adapters: A power adapter that includes swappable regional plug attachments for US, UK, EU, and AU outlets.
• Mounting Brackets and Screws: Dual mounting ears if you want to secure the switch to a rack, under a desk, or directly onto a wall behind your projector setup.
• 3 Pin Phoenix Terminal Connector: A small green adapter block for RS232 serial control setups.
• Documentation: A quick reference support card along with a detailed user manual to guide you through initial setup.
It is really nice seeing mounting hardware included right out of the box. Having those mounting ears makes cable management so much easier when you are trying to hide wires behind a media console or projector mount!
Setting Up the HDMI Matrix
Before permanently routing cables and moving the unit to its permanent placement, I always like to do a quick bench test first. I plugged in the power supply and connected four different HDMI source inputs to test each port on the switch.
My main goal for this initial test was to confirm that the matrix could send both video and audio out to two separate displays at the exact same time without dropping signal. Here is how each of my devices performed during testing:
• PlayStation 3: This is my primary source for 3D content viewing, and I did not have any issues with setting this up. The HDMI matrix was able to pass 3D information right over to the XGIMI Horizon S Max and the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max without any hitch.
• Google TV Full HD: I was able to pass a Full HD HDR signal with zero configuration issues.
• Amazon Fire TV 4K: I was able to pass through 4K SDR, HDR, and Dolby Vision to the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max with no issues at all. It also passed 4K SDR and 1080p HDR over to the Horizon S Max, as well as 4K HDR over to the BenQ TK705i.
• PlayStation 4: The matrix passed through Full HD with HDR enabled without any problems.
During all of this testing, I did not notice any input lag while navigating menus on the streaming sticks or playing games on the consoles.
Audio Capabilities and Extraction
Audio flexibility is one of the biggest reasons to use a dedicated matrix switch, especially when pairing projectors with external sound systems or soundbars. The 4KMX42 H2A gives you a few different ways to handle your sound:
• Full HDMI Audio Pass Through: If you route your HDMI outputs directly to an AV receiver or soundbar, the switch passes lossless surround formats like Dolby Atmos, DTS X, Dolby TrueHD, and multichannel LPCM.
• Digital Optical Output (SPDIF): This lets you extract digital audio from your sources directly to an external sound system or legacy receiver. It supports up to 5.1 channel surround sound including Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1.
• HDMI Out 2 ARC Support: One really cool feature is that HDMI Output 2 supports Audio Return Channel (ARC). By toggling the rear DIP switch to ARC mode, you can take audio originating from a connected TV or smart projector and send it back out through the optical SPDIF port to your sound system.
• Analog 3.5mm Output: For headphones or simple desktop speakers, there is a dedicated 3.5mm stereo jack that de-embeds 2 channel PCM audio from HDMI Output 1.
Having built in audio de-embedding makes setting up external speakers so much simpler, especially with projectors that lack high quality built in speakers or digital outputs.
Auto Downscaling and Daily Control
Beyond standard video routing and audio extraction, two key features stood out during daily testing:
• Automatic 4K to 1080p Downscaling: One common issue with standard splitters is that if you connect a 4K display and a 1080p display at the same time, the system forces both to output in 1080p. The 4KMX42 H2A handles this effortlessly with independent downscaling. It can automatically downscale a 4K input signal to 1080p for a legacy 1080p display while keeping the full 4K resolution active on your main projector.
• Remote and Front Panel Controls: Switching inputs is straightforward. You can use the physical push buttons right on the front metal panel, or use the included IR remote. The remote layout is split logically into two main sections (one for Output 1 and one for Output 2), making it easy to select inputs 1 through 4 for either screen independently.
Build Quality and Thermal Performance
• Solid Metal Construction: The unit features a durable black metal chassis that feels premium and rigid. The industrial design fits right in with higher end audio visual gear.
• Compact Form Factor: Despite offering four inputs and dual outputs along with audio extraction, the housing maintains a low profile design. This makes it easy to tuck away on a shelf, slide into a rack setup using the included mounting brackets, or mount out of sight behind a display.
• Cool Operation: Passive cooling vents along the side help dissipate internal heat. Even after several hours of continuous 4K HDR playback and gaming across multiple inputs, the unit remained only slightly warm to the touch without any performance throttling or signal drops.
Who Is This For?
The AV Access 4KMX42-H2A is a versatile piece of gear, but it really shines in a few specific setups:
• Projector Owners Running Out of Ports: If your projector only has one or two HDMI inputs, this matrix switch instantly expands your capacity to four devices. You can leave your media streamers, gaming consoles, and disc players permanently plugged in without ever having to swap cables behind your projector again.
• Home Theater Enthusiasts with External Audio or AVR Setups: If you want to feed high quality video to your display while simultaneously routing dedicated digital audio out to an AV receiver, soundbar, or legacy audio system, the built in audio extraction and ARC capabilities make integration seamless.
• Users with Dual Display Desktop or Mixed Workstations: If you share a desk space between a gaming PC, a work laptop, and secondary media sources across dual monitors or a desktop screen and TV combo, this switch lets you independently route any computer or console to either screen with the press of a button.
Final Verdict and Recommendation
If you are struggling with a limited number of HDMI ports on your projector, or trying to manage dual displays alongside external audio gear, the AV Access 4KMX42-H2A HDMI 2.0 Matrix Switch is an absolute game changer.
It handles everything you throw at it with ease, from 3D playback on consoles like the PS3 to 4K HDR and Dolby Vision streams and low lag gaming on modern consoles. Add in the automatic 1080p downscaling, flexible audio extraction with ARC support, and rock solid metal build quality, and you have a total winner for any home theater or desktop setup.
I would highly recommend this HDMI Matrix Switch for anyone looking to simplify their AV routing!

Looking for a Projector for under $200? Check out this Epson PowerLite 1284 WUXGA Projector
Hi everyone, I came across a listing for the Epson PowerLite 1284 WUXGA 3LCD projector and thought I would share it with you.
Disclosure: As an eBay Partner Network Affiliate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
• Epson PowerLite 1284 3LCD Projector with 300 Lamp Hours Used
For $139.99 + Free Shipping
This is a native WUXGA projector with a resolution of 1920x1200.
One of the most common questions I get is whether it is possible to view Full HD 16:9 content on a WUXGA 16:10 projector. The answer is yes, but there is a catch. When you view 16:9 content on this projector, you will notice thin black bars at the top and bottom of the image.
This is normal because the projector is simply maintaining the correct framing for the image it receives.
If you connect a laptop or desktop computer to this projector, the black bars disappear once you select a 16:10 compatible resolution. However, for video playback, the PC will automatically include black bars based on the type of video content being played.
Again, this is completely normal.
Since the listing doesn’t include a remote I have sourced a generic replacement one for you below:
——
Audio Solutions:
Now, let’s delve into the topic of sound. The Epson PowerLite 1284 only comes with a built-in speaker, but it lacks an audio output.
So, how do we get sound from our devices?
The answer is quite simple. We leverage the sound capabilities of our connected devices.
For instance, if you’re using a modern game console, you can connect it to a speaker or soundbar using Bluetooth audio or the optical port.
Similarly, if you’re using a streaming stick, you can utilize its Bluetooth feature.
However, what if you prefer not to use Bluetooth?
If you own a soundbar with HDMI pass-through, you can connect your video device to it. The soundbar can then process the audio and route the video back to the projector as a display device.
Alternatively, if you own an AVR, you can connect all your video devices to the receiver and then connect the HDMI output to the projector. In this case, the projector will function solely as a display device.
What if I have an older device that doesn’t support separate audio output but still uses HDMI (such as a Blu-ray player, cable/satellite box, etc.)?
In such situations, we can purchase an HDMI audio extractor. This device allows us to extract audio from the connected device, providing us with the audio outputs we require. For instance, some extractors offer outputs such as 3.5mm, RCA (red and white), and optical output.
If you have any questions about this model and need assistance in setting it up, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me by commenting on this post.
Thank you all for taking the time to review this listing.
