Mostly regarding scholarships in Humanities !

(long post ahead) My apologies for any hazy or dubious formatting, I just got sick and my head is tormenting me.

I have some questions regarding Oxford / funding / applications, etc. Please do not tell me to just do some research and find resources online, I thankfully do have a useful Internet access but as a French student, international studies systems can be quite opaque.

I, like many people, have a dream and it is to study at Oxford. I currently wonder whether there’s a point in applying next year.

First, a bit more about my academic background (I am not sure what is relevant, so I figured I’d better write it all out) :

→ I graduated from an international French high school with the highest honors + as a valedictorian
→ Said graduation also came with the recognition of the “european” pathway, which basically means I studied some extra topics in English

→ I currently am in a classe préparatoire which is a unique French program (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classe_pr%C3%A9paratoire_aux_grandes_%C3%A9coles)
→ I am in one of the most prestigious of them
→ I am also in the one ranked no. 1 in my specific field
→ I was ranked among top 3 students last year (year 2 just started so I have no data for the current one + we were also joined by a handful of students retaking the classes so naturally, they are more advanced)
→ Last year I was ranked no. 1 student in Art History

→ For next year, I am to complete my BA (the classe prépa does not offer a BA since it is extremely broad but is considered equivalent to 2 years, so we are expected to join BAs directly in 3rd year)
→ Through the classe prépa, I can aim for the ENS, the no. 1 school for humanities here but it is more research-oriented and it is almost guaranteed I would end up as a teacher/researcher which is not a position I am interested in.
→ I can also just go to the Sorbonne University (top 100 for QS, if that means anything)
→ However I intend on going to the School of the Louvre (not sure about rankings, but yes, it’s literally within the museum)

Now more on my personal background and motivations :

For a long time I was quite uncertain about what I liked. Being an ‘academic weapon’, I was just always oriented to keep on studying although I am not sure whether I have an academic heart. Being great at something does not imply you enjoy it. So lately I started to step back and reconsider what I actually appreciated : history and beauty. I am enjoying art history, which is sort of my ‘major’ currently (although, once again, in classe prépa I also study intensively French, Latin, Philosophy, History, Spanish, English). However, I don’t see myself in a museum, I love to travel & discover and my mind is restless. Therefore, I’m currently considering heading more towards a sort of ‘decorative’ path, basically taking care of old places, something involving designing, art-making… I remain also open to more traditional paths like geopolitics (which I miss dearly) or simply history and just seeing where it takes me from there.

While many seek out the American dream, I grew up surrounded by elements of British culture (be it books, movies, series, music…) and naturally Oxford was omnipresent in British media. Having done more research about it, I think it would suit my heart while also being perfect to fulfill my extremely (overly ?) high-aiming ambitions.

However, like many others of us peasants, I am not exactly rich and in fact am rather poor. I get help from the French government for my current studies (I am extremely grateful for it) and don’t get to work on the side due to the heavy workload of a classe prépa. So, of course, having no intention to get into debt for a degree, I am wondering if there are any hopes of getting a scholarship.

The thing is, I am eyeing some courses like the MSt in History of Design, or perhaps something more traditional like a MPhil in European History. Are these fields not just theoretically but actually getting scholarships ? Humanities aren’t a priority in today’s world so I’m worried getting a scholarship for those would be near impossible, even more so compared to other degrees. Plus, I’m French so I don’t know if French students are eligible for most scholarships.

And if so, is there anything I could do to improve my profile ? Additional information : I am able to get a letter of recommendation from a highly-regarded French art historian if it matters.

And finally, is there anyone with a general review on History of Design and what it brought you ?

Thanks !

When should I book a hostel for July in London ?

Hello everyone ! I know that dynamic pricing can be really annoying. I'm looking to book an hostel in London for next July. At what time period are the prices usually lower ?

Should I book right now or wait a few months? At the moment, I'm seeing like 36 euros a night, which is OK but I really can't afford it to go any higher

Should I be worried about this new Booking place ?

Hello everyone !

My friend and I are on a student budget to visit London next year. We found a place which seems perfect, financially-wise. We are simply worried because it is a brand new place with no reviews.

  1. We checked the images and we are sure they have not been stolen nor made with AI. There are several angles of each room.

  2. I checked the location and the map shows the same one as the advert

  3. The host has his photo put up and a small introduction. I found him online and he seems to be recognized amongst his peers and it would make sense for him to own another appartment as a side revenue. I reached out to him to make sure his identity wasn't stolen (waiting for an answer)

  4. We can cancel up to 24h before without any fees

  5. The owner has to confirm our offer before we book (which makes me think he just doesn't want money)

We are simply worried because, although the place is far from the center, the place is still quite cheap. I think it might just be because, since it's a new one, he has to build attractiveness before raising his prices.

Does that sound OK to you ? Is there anything else I should check ?

Advice regarding time repartition for my trip in Italy (August 2027)

Hello ! Next summer, I'll have 9 days in Italy (in August, but no other option for me). After some research, I found out I was extremely interested in some places I hadn't originally considered... Now I'm at a bit of a loss considering time repartition, and of course I'm aware I wouldn't have time to visit everything in each city.

2 days in Venice

1 day around Lake Como (not staying for the night)

2 days in Florence

4 days in Rome

Should I skip Lake Como ? It looks stunning but I know it will be crowded.

Or should I just not go to Florence and do 3 days Venice / 1 day Lake Como / 5 days Rome ?

Art History is important to me, which is why I'm considering to do Florence by then, instead of waiting for my next occasion to visit Italy. Still, I'm afraid I'm trying to fit too much in my trip

Any hostels recs ?

Hello ! I am a budget traveler and I am considering visiting Lake Como (in August, but next year, no other way around it). I can't seem to find many hostels in the area online, do you perhaps know of any with reasonable pricing (less than 40/night, I only intend to stay one night) and from which I could rather easily go to the Lake ?

Thanks !

Hello ! Advice regarding days spent in Venice/Rome

I am hesitating between 3 days in Venice + 4 days in Rome

Or 2 days in Venice + 5 days in Rome

I'll be there in August (no other choice) so I'm aware of the heat

Hello ! A question regarding flights "publication"

Hello, I was lucky enough to get into a travelling programme. As the places for flights are limited, I have to book them as soon as possible. However, I'll be travelling in July/August 2027.

At what time of the year are summer flights usually revealed ?

Right now, I can only see flights until June 15th and I have checked several companies.

Thank you !

A question regarding inbound travel

If I end in a city that is more than 24 hours away from my home city, do I just have to manage to go back on my own ?

A question

Is the inbound trip on the last day of the allowed month ? Or can it be the next day ?

Say my dates are 15 July to 14 August. Does my inbound trip have to be on the 14th of August or is it on the 15th ?

A question regarding time management

Hello !

As far as I understand, the interrail is available to use on 7 seven days (not consecutively) over the span of a month. My question is, should we start our travel by plane, would it start the one-month countdown ?
I am aware that interrail and DiscoverEU are not the same system, so since the plane is through Discover EU, I thought it might not be the case.

Thank you !
