Backcountry Review

Backcountry Review

I posted about these boots when they arrived a few weeks ago: Shrunken bison leather, Sierra Wedge sole. Broke these in walking around the neighborhood and on a few short day hikes. Just got back from a backpacking trip and have enough time on these for a proper review.

The short: Wow, I love these boots. For the first time in decades my feet didn't hurt after hiking all day. These are the best backpacking boots I've had the privilege to wear, and I've been doing this for 35 years.

Details: I used these on a 3 day 25 mile trek through the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho. Very rocky trails. Early season conditions with snow covered passes, so spent time with Micro Spikes on. Lots of wet trails and stream crossings. The boots held up very well (picture is after brushing them clean). My feet stayed dry the entire trip. The Sierra Wedge plus layers of leather under foot provides just the right amount of support and squish for long days carrying heavy loads on rocky trails. If anyone from RM is reading this, I really hope you bring the Sierra Wedge back as a option in the future.

Negatives: Some of the stitching that holds the upper part of the inner vamp near the ankle came undone. Doesn't seem to affect performance, doesn't seem to be an issue structurally so I'm not worried about it. I may get it repaired at some point in the off season.

Overall, love these boots and am very happy with how these performed on the trail.

New Backcountry

These arrived today!

Ordered in early February, so almost exactly 4 months. Excellent build quality. And the length is perfect, just followed their recommendation to go down 1/2 size from Brannock.

I added a Nick's Delta Arch for arch support and to take up volume. Also added bison kilties.

Very comfortable right out of the box, though I plan on breaking these in before taking them out backpacking.

Shrunken Bison Cognac on Sierra Wedge sole.

Very very very happy with these, well worth the wait.

Thoughts on Sierra Wedge durability for bigger fellas?

I'm waiting for a MTO Ridgeline with Sierra Wedge. This is something I plan to use for backpacking with a combined weight (me + gear) of around 280 lbs.

Any bigger guys out there have experience with the Sierra Wedge? Specifically, I'm wondering about how well the middle foam layer holds up over time for my application. Like roughly how many miles should I expect until it compresses or starts to break down?

And if I ultimately go with the Sierra Wedge and it's not durable enough for me, is it possible to have it resoled with a Red-X/honey unit?

NBD - Nick's Gamebreaker

I spec’d these boots specifically for chukar hunting in SW Idaho. In other words, lots of scrambling around steep grassy ridges, talus, gravely slopes, and rim rock. This boot has everything I’m looking for: durable all leather upper, secure fit, ankle/foot support, and great traction

The Gamebreaker is a 360 degree stitchdown construction, which is a lighter and more flexible build. I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable this boot is out of the box compared to my other PNW boots. I wore it for 30 minutes around the house, then walked in it for a couple of miles with almost no discomfort. It still needs time to break in (especially the heel counter), but I’m confident this will be an easy break in.

I like the Lace-to-Toe (LTT) design to adjust the fit for side hilling and long descents. It is also the anatomic Thurman last, which my toes already appreciate.

This boot typically comes with a Sierra Wedge sole, which is likely a better general use hiking boot. But I went with the Vibram Honey unit sole because I love how it performs on steep terrain.

Overall I’m extremely happy with this boot. The fit is perfect and the feel underfoot with the added Delta Arch insole is wonderful. I can even see using this boot for backpacking. Looking forward to getting it fully broken in before hunting season.

Six month review - Strata 10.5"

We've been daily driving this for 6 months now. This may be the perfect CS pan, especially for induction. Very well made, no issues with warping. Love how quickly and evenly it distributes heat, and the light weight is appreciated. This now lives permanently on the stove top and we use it multiple times daily: eggs, pancakes, hash browns, grill cheese, quesadillas, ground beef... it's our go-to for most things. I did the initial season in the oven, which as expected was somewhat delicate, but we just kept cooking and don't worry about it anymore. Most of the time there's no stickage and we just give it a good wipe to clean, but will scrub with chain mail occasionally as needed. So happy with this that we bought a Strata wok, which we're also loving, though not enough time on this yet for a solid review.
