It's not as much of an insult to the people it's meant to insult, as it's a huge insult to neanderthals. They might be extinct now but they were one of our closest known relatives ever. They were close enough to us that they not only interbred with ancient homo sapiens, but the pairing produced viable offspring proven by the presence of neanderthal DNA in a fair chunk of the human population to this day. They were grossly misrepresented in old media as crude and "lesser", but we now know they were intelligent and complex and had development such as tools and fire pretty much just like we did. It's very annoying how we still keep using them as an insult synonymous to stupid and brutish, as if none of what we now know about them mattered in face of their old slander.

No foul to the people whose comments I yoinked my two shown text bits from if you do happen to recognize them, I just needed examples (plus these appearing in two comment sections in a row is what annoyed me enough to post about this)
